HOLDER FOR SASHES, DOORS, AND THE LIKE.
V Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915..
Application filed August 5, 1914. Seria1No. 855,221.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO VON HIDDnssEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sauk City, in the county of Sank, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Sashes,
Doors, and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to holding devices, particularly to a device for the use of carpenters and others, whereby articles may be held while being worked upon, and has for its object the provision of a holder whereby a sash, door, screen or the like may be held while being planed or otherwise fixed, so that the operator may have both hands free for themanipulation of his tools.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which may be read-' ily attached to a window sill, work bench, shelf or any other suitable place.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character formed of a minimum number of parts and provided with holding. jaws which are formed integrally from a single sheet of material, asby stamping and bonding. is
Still another object is the provision of a device of this character which'is adjustable for holding sashes, doors orthe' like of different thicknesses.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character provided with means whereby it is easily attached in any desired position and which will be held securely in such position and prevented fromlcreeping or other movement. 7
Other objects and advantages such as simplicity, cheapness in manufacture, efficiency in service and the general improvement of the art will be carefully brought out in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device,
applied to the edge of a work bench and having a door disposed therein, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device, Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view through the entire device showing the fastening means, Fig. 4: is a side elevation detached, Fig. 5 is. a perspective view of the stationary jaw detached, and Fig. 6 is a View of the blank from which the: stationary jaw is formed.
Referring. more particularly to the draw;
ing, the numeral 10 designates the top of a 7 work bench or any other suitable bench upon which: my novel device is adapted to be secured. My novel holder comprises a main or body portion l1, bent at right angles at its upper edge to form a retainingflange 12. The body portion 11 is provided at its ends with small flanges 13 which have their edges sharpened toforin extending edges 13 for a purpose to be described.
Secured upon the body portion 11 adjacent one end is a stationary jaw designated as a whole by the numeral 14. The jaw 14' will cooperate with another jaw 15 slidable upon the body portion 11. Thej aw 14% is formed preferably from a single sheet of material 16 cut away as shown at 17 and having certain of its corners inclined as shown at 18. The blank 16 is then bent along the line 19'and along the line 20 whereby the fiat plate portion 21 is produced, having an inolined side wall 21" andaflat top 22. The plate portion 21 is riveted or otherwise suitably secured upon the body portion 11, the top portion22 is riveted or otherwise secured upon the flange l2 and the side wall 21 will then be disposed at an obtuse angle to the body portion 11. The slidable'jaw 15 is formed in substantially the same manner exceptthat it comprises a plate portion 23, an inclined side wall 24 and a top portion 25. The'rcon'struction of the jaw 15 varies from that" of" the jaw 14. in the provision of a lug 26 formed on the plate portion 23' and riveted upon the top portion 25, for forming a rigid structure. A reinforcing plate 26 is disposed upon the plate portion 23 and is, together with the plate portion 23 apertured for the reception .7 of a screw 27 disposed through a longitudinal slot 28 in the body portion 11 and carrying a clamping nut 29. It will thus be seen that the jaw 15 may be moved longitudinally upon the body portion and may be clamped securely thereon at any desired distance from the jaw 14 by tightening the nut 29. The side wall 24 of theijaw 15 is disposed at an obtuse angle to the body portion so that the space between the jaws is wedge shaped so that the top of a sash or door inserted therebetween may be securely held against lateral movement while being perated on, without fine adjustment of the movable jaw.
In order that the device may be quickly and easily attachable to the bench 10 or other suitable support, I, provide pins 30 extending through the body portion 11 adjacent each end thereof. ,The pins 80 may conveniently be formed from screws passing through the body portion, provided upon the inner face thereof with ends 31 having their sides engaging the flange l3, and reduced at their inner ends to form pointed collar-button-like heads 32. The device is placed in position against the top of a support with the flange l2 engaging the top of the support, whereby a light tap from a hammer will cause the heads 32 to enter the support. At the same time the sharpened edge of the flanges 13 will bite into the support and serve to prevent shifting of the device thereon.
When the device is placed in the position as desired, and the top of the sash, door, or the like is inserted between the jaws 14 and 15, the sash or the like will be heldfirmly so that the operator may use both of his hands for the proper manipulation of the tools, asfor instance a plane for trimming up the edges of the sash or the like, or for any other desired treatment.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a novel and simple device whereby sashes, doors and frames or other articles of a similar nature may be held against lateral movement while being worked upon.
It will be readily understood that I reserve the right to make'various changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or limiting the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A device' of the character described comprising a body portion, a flange formed on one longitudinal edge of said body portion, a stationary jaw secured upon said body portion, and a second jaw movable longitudinally thereon, the inner walls of the jaws being outwardly inclined to form a wedge shaped space between them.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body portion provided with a longitudinal slot, a flange formed on the upper longitudinal edge of said body portion, a jaw secured upon said body portion adjacent one end thereof, a second jaw slidable on said body portion, a clamping screw passing through said movable jaw and said slot, whereby the position of said movable jaw may be varied, the space between said jaws being wedge shaped, and means for securing said body portion upon the support.
3. A device of the character described comprising a body portion provided with a slot, a flange on the upper longitudinal edge of said body portion, flanges formed on the ends of said body portion and sharpened to form biting edges, pins extending through and at the ends of said body portion and adapted to be embedded within a support, a stationary jaw secured adjacent one end of said body portion, a movable jaw on said body portion, and a clamping screw extending through said movable jaw and said slot, the inner opposed faces of said jaws being inclined.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
