ELECTRICAL SWITCH.
Application filed November 25, 1913.
consisting of receptacle and cover portions.-
ln this specific type of switch, the stationary and movable contacts are mounted upon a base of insulating material attached to the bottom of the receptacle. The movable contacts are pivotally mounted to the base and are ope ated by a crank or operating member provided with a bearing in the side of the case and extending outside to provide for exterior manipulation.
My present improvement consists in providing means for positively holding the switch contacts in their on position when they are manipulatedto make electrical connection and to accelerate the breaking of the connection between the contacts upon the manipulation of the operating crank or handle eliect this result,
in the accompanying sheet of drawings: fl illustrates top plan view of a ece tacle being open and the contacts 1 in their on position, is a n elevation showing the parts in n, and Fig. 8 is a cross sectional n on line a-a of 1 with the wn in their ofi position indicates a metallic receptacle h hinged cover 2. indicates a block of insulating material st to bottom. of the casino 1'. @n this as mock of insulating "material tionary jaw contacts 41- and pivoted knife blade contacts r mounted; The knife blade contacts 5 connected means of e crossnead 6 of hinting material. The cross-headt is be provided with an eye retaining member a which of the crank or operating handle 8, the op posits end being provided with a knob T 8 is provided with an intermed1- ortion 10 having a bear I no l, the bearing having Specification of Letters Eatent.

such relation to the pivotal points of the knife blade contacts 5 as to provide for a full effective throw of the knife blade -con tacts when the operating handle is manipulated to make or break the connection between them. A
In order to accelerate the breaking of the connection when the operating crank is manipulated, so that a quick or snappy break will occur, I employ a spiral spring 11 one end of which is connected to the operating crank by an eye 12 the other end being con nested by an eye 13 to one end of the casing. This spring, as will be observed, is expanded when the movable contacts are thrown into their on position, the stored up energy of the expanded spring spending itseil to accelerate the return movement of the movable contacts to their on position when the crank is operated in the reverse direc tion to break the connection between the contacts. in order to hold the knife blade contacts in their on position and to overcome the power of the spring 11 the tendency of which is to normally establish. open electricalconnection between the contacts, 3 mount upon the side of the casing at it a steel sheet metal spring bent at 16 in the manner shown. "lhis S'OZlZW member is positioned that it will he in the path of a portion of the operating crank and be engaged thereby who: the latter is rnanipu. lated to throw the knife blade e nt cts into their fan position. The a this, spring member will engage ing crank and be deflected thei by forcing it outwardly and permitting the crank pass or fall the carved b por tion thereof where it is retained by the spring tension thereof. "iVlien ing crank is manipulated to trieal connection between the or holding ability or member is overcome thus 1 passage ward oscillation. The full tensi spring ill to Qu 1 or this movement so that a the switch. contacts is spring 11 and spring l to prevent a p tial connection lished between tir contacts one. nse a full oositive connec "on being established between them. Fu thermore, spring'll pre the ace d .1218 spires. 15 both tend sing estabcome its tension sin ing the manipulation of the switch.
Havmg thus descrlhea. my inventlon what I claim as new herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1;. in an iron clad; switch of the character descriheai in combination with stationary and movable contacts, a snhstantialiy U,- shaped operating member cooperatively associated with the movable. contacts ans extending through the side of the casing, an expansion spring connected at one end. to one side of the casing and its other end to the U-shapecl operating member, said expension spring having a, tendency normally to accelerate the movement of the U-shaped operating member when it is manipulates to break the electrical connection between the contacts and means for overcoming the 2c tension of sent" expansion spring, said means adapted to'engage theU-shapeci operating member when manipulated to throw the contacts into contact making position.
2. in an iron clwi switch oi the character i ist eee the operating member and hole} the sameagainst the tension of saiti expansion spring when the movable contacts are thrown circnit-estahlishecl. position,
in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hancil in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 21st day of Novena?)er 1913. I s'tson o. non e Witnesses:
