To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST VVARTZACK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Tonganoxie, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Hay- Racks, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in hay-racks, and my object is to produce a light, inexpensive and which can readily be placed in position upon the running gear of a wagon, or removed therefrom.
in order to obtain the greatest strength with the least weight, I construct the rack almost entirely of angle-irons.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hayrack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said hayrack. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line III-III of Fig. 1.
In constructing; my hay-rack, a pair of parallel. metal sills 1 are arranged in parallel relation to each other and provided at their front and rear portions with trusses 2 and 3, respectively. Said trusses are riveted or otherwise firmly secured at their ends to the sills, and further connected thereto by vertical braces 4 extending upward from the intermediate portions of the trusses.
The rear inclined arms 5 of the trusses 2 are so disposed as to permit the front wheels of the wagon gear (not shown) to pass thereunder when turning a corner.
The front trusses 2 are united at their lower portions by a transverse strut 6 rigidly secured thereto, and the lower sides of the trusses 3 are united by a pair of struts 7. The trusses 2 and 3 are adapted to rest upon the bolsters of the running gear, strut 6 being so disposed as to come just in advance of the front bolster and the struts 7 being spaced a short distance apart to admit the rear bolster, the opposite sides of which the struts 7 are adapted to engage and thus prevent the rack from shifting longitudinally upon the running gear when going up or down grade.

The sills l are provided with a plurality of perforations 11 adjacent to the intermediate cross-bars 8, so that said intermediate cross-bars, together, with the U-bolts 9 may be adjusted forward or backward to adjust the weight of the load thereon either toward or away from the adjacent ends of the trusses.
l2 designates a ladder extending forwardly and upwardly from the front strut 6, to which it is rigidly secured, said ladder constituting a convenient means for climbing upon or off a load of hay resting on the rack. Said ladder also assists in securing the load upon the rack.
The inner ends of the arms 5 have their horizontal webs formed with a plurality of perforations 11 which register with the perforations 11 of the sills, so that when the arms of the U-bolts are enga ed with certain of the registered perforations, said bolts not only serve as securing means for the cross-bars 8, but also to clampinglv hold the rear ends of the arms 5 in engagement with the sills, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that I have produced a hay-rack embodying the features of advantage above enumerated, and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
