FIRE-HOSE CART.
Application filed March 29, 1913.
To all whom it, may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. LANG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ire-Hose Carts; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fire-hose-carts.
The primary object of this invention is to inflate the hose of a fire-hose-c'art while connected with the hose-winding drum of the cart and keep the hose inflated when the hose is not in use, and thereby cause the hose to be kept in a sound condition and ready for use without liability, when used at a fire, of bursting which would be liable to result from cracking or mutilation of the hose if the hose were permitted to become flattened or bent when not in use.
Another object is not only to provide a fire-hose-cart with a winding drum for winding up and paying out the fire-hose of the cart, but to have said drum provided interiorly with a chamber in which compressed air is stored, to conduct air under pressure into said chamber at the axis of the drum, to control the passage of air to said chamber, to conduct air under pressure from said chamber to the fire-hose connected to. the drum, to control the passage of air from said chamber to the hose, to indicate the pressure of air in said chamber, and to indicate the pressure of air in the hose.- Withthese objects in view, and to the end of realizing any other advantages hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations and relative arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to said two suitably supported laterally spaced side frames of a fire-hose-cart, and B represents a winding drum employed in winding up or paying out fire-hose G which is shown as not in use and therefore wound on the drum. The drum is arranged horizontally between the frames A. The drum is provided with two trunnions D and E arranged horizontally at opposite ends respectively of and centrally of the drum and in line'endwise. Said trunnions have bearing in the frames A. The trunnion D is solid and is shown operatively provided with a wheel (Z for rotating the drum. The trunnion E is tubular, having a bore e which extends longitudinally of the trunnion and is in communication at its inner end, as at c, with a chamber 7) formed interiorly of the drum B,
and said trunnion E is provided with a valve drawings, A indicates f for controlling the passage of air through the said bore. Obviously upon placing the trunnion E at its outer end in communication with an air-pump (not shown) and operating said pump upon opening the valve f air under pressure is supplied to the chamber 6. that the bore 6 in the trunnion E forms the air-inlet of the chamber Z2.
The drum B is provided with two rails It will be observed therefore 8 and 8 arranged at opposite ends respectively and extending clrcumferentially of the drum, and the hose C is shown wound on the drum between said rails.
The drum B is provided at one end at the periphery of the drum and externally of the chamber 6 with a passageway 10 which is arranged at the periphery of the drum and at the inner side of the adjacent rail 8 and extends circumferentiallyof the drum, which passageway is in communication, at one end, as at 12, with said chamber and forms the air-outlet of said chamber. Said passageway communicates at its other end with the hose C which has its fiuid-receiving passageway communicates with the aforesaid chamber, and a valve controlling communication through said passageway between the points at which the pressuregages are placed in communication with the passageway.
2. In a fire-hose-cart, a hose-reel comprising a compressed-air-reservoir and providedv externally with a passageway which extends circumferentially of the reel and communicates with said reservoir and is adapted to conduct air from said reservoir to a fire-hose; a pressure-gage placed in communication with said passageway and adapted to indicate the pressure of air confined in the fire-hose, and a valve controlling communication through said passageway and arranged between said pressure-gage and the point at which said passageway is placed in communication with the aforesaid reservoir said reservoir participating in the formation of the body of the reel.
3. In a fire-hose-cart, a hose-reel comprising a compressed-air-reservoir and provided externally with a passageway which commimicates with said reservoir and is adapted to conduct air from said reservoir to' a fire-hose; a pressure-gage placed in com munication with said passageway and adapted to indicate the pressure of air confined in the fire-hose, and a valve controlling communication through said passageway and arranged between said pressure-gage and the point at which said passageway is placed in communication with the aforesaid reservoir, said reservoir participating in the formation of the body of the reel and being arranged concentrically relative to the axis of the reel.

In a fire-hose-cart, a hose-reel comprising a compressedair-reservoir and provided externally with a passageway which communicates with said reservoir and is adapted to conduct air from said reservoir to a fire-hose; a pressure-gage placed in communication with said passageway and adapted to indicate the pressure of air con fined in the fire-hose, and a valve controlling communication through said passageway and arranged between said pressuregage and the point at which said passageway is placed in communication with the aforesaid reservoir, said reservoir being ar ranged and contoured to form a winding drum for fire-hose.
5. In a fire-hose-cart, a hose-reel comprising a compressed-air-reservoir provided at its circumference with a passageway adapted to conduct air to a fire-hose; a pressure-gage placed in communication with said passageway and adapted to indicate the a1r-pressure in the fire-hose, and a valve controlling communication through said passageway and arranged between the point at which said pressure-gage is placed in communication with the passageway and the air-inlet of the passageway, the aforesaid reservoir being placed in communication with said passageway through the afore said air-inlet and provided with two suitably supported trunnions arranged at opposite ends respectively of the reel and in line endwise, one trunnion being provided interiorly with a valved bore forming the air-inlet of the reservoir.
6. In a fire-hose-cart, a hose-reel provided externally with two suitably supported trunnions arranged at opposite ends respectively of the reel and in line endwise, one trunnion being provided interiorly with a valved bore, said reel being provided with a passageway which is in communication with the aforesaid bore and adapted to conduct air to a fire-hose; two pressure-gages placed in communication with said passageway at points spaced between the point at which the passageway is adapted to connect with a fire-hose and the air-inlet of the passageway, and a valve controlling communication through said passageway and arranged between the points at which said pressure-gages are placed in communication with the passageway.
7. In a fire-hose-cart, a hose-reel comprising a compressed air-reservoir provided externally with two suitably supported trunnions arranged at opposite ends respectively of the reel and in line endwise, one trunnion being provided interiorly with a valved bore, communicating with said reservoir, said reel being provided at its circumference with a passageway which is placed in communication with said reservoir and adapted to conduct air to a firehose; two pressure-gages placed in commu nication with said passageway at points spaced between the point at which the passageway is adapted to connect with a firehose and the point at which the passageway is placed in communication with said reservoir, and a valve controlling communication through said passageway and arranged be tween the points at which said pressuregages are placed in communication with the passageway.
8. In a fire-hose-cart, a winding drum provided exteriorly with two suitably supported trunnions arranged at opposite ends respectively of the drum and in line endwise, one trunnion being provided interiorly with a valved bore, said drum being provided with a passageway arranged at the periphery of the drum, which passageway is in communication with the aforesaid bore and adapted to conduct fluid received thereby to a fire-hose; two pressure-gages placed in communication with said passageway at points spaced between the point at which
