ln these drawings ll have illustrated one embodiment, ci my invention and have shown the same applied' to an ordinary telephone pay station and adaptedgto handle coins ora single denomination only but it will be understood that the invention `is capable oie application to stations or mecha nisins' or various hin/ds and by making the necessary additions can be adapted to handle coins ci dirierent denominations.
En carrying out the present 'form of the invention' l have'inounted the mechanism upon a trame comprising a hack member constituting the back or' a casing 2 which incloses the mechanism-with the exception or the push .lever to be actuated by the calling party. The main iframe comprises in addition to the back member l trame members 3 which extend into the casing and vtorni supports Ator the various parts ci the mechanism. llt is desirable that the coin be deposited in the machine before the central operator is called and to thisend l have provided means :tor so controlling the calling signal that this 'signal cannot be oper- -ated except when there is a coin in proper position within the machine. The calling signal may be of any suitable kind but preierably comprises the usual signal circuit extending rom the instrument to the switch board at the central station where itis connected withv a lamp which will be illuminated when the circuit is closed. lnasmuoh as this circuit isot a well miown -construction and forms no part of the present inventionll have not illustrated the same but have shown only the circuit breaker and closerv which comprises two s ring contacts 4 and 5. The contact mem er 5 is resiliently mounted and is adapted to move toward and away from the contact member d, this movement being imparted to the member 5 by means ot a lever 6 pivotally mounted upon the main frame at 7 andv having one arm er.-
tending upwardly along the contact memher 5 and provided with a projection or roller 8 to engage that member when the lever is rocked about its axis. The lever has a second arm 9 adapted to be engaged by a catch and locked in such a position as to hold the lever in'an inoperative position relatively to the contact member 5, thus making it impossible to operate the signal by closing the circuit; The catch 10 constitutes one arm of a bell crank lever which is pivctally mounted at 11. and the other arm of which carries a pin 12 extending' through a slot 13 into the lower ortion of a coin chute 14, the upper end o which communicates with an opening 15 in the casing 2. The latch is held normally in engagement with the arm 9 of the locking lever by a spring 16, the tension of which is so slight that the weight of a coin dropping through the chute 14 will overcome the tension of the spring and the frictional contact between the latch and the arm 9- and disconnect these parts, thereby leaving the lever free to move under'the influence of an actuating spring 17 which moves it into engagement with thel contact member-5 and carries that member into contact with its cooperating member 4, thereby closing the circuit and operating the signal when a coin hasbeen deposited in the chute 14.
`Counting mechanism of any suitable kind is provided for computing the value of the coins deposited in the chute 14 and accepted by the central operator, as will be hereinafter described. In orderto secure aposi-l tive operation of the counting mechanism I prefer that the actuating device therefor should be operated by power mechanism of some kind, such, for example, as a spring. While it is possible to utilize a spring which could be wound and would thus operate the counting mechanism a number of times I prefer to utilize a simple coil spring and to provide means whereby the same will be placed under tension, or put in condition to operate the counters, by the calling party. To this end I vhave provided means 'for normally closing the chute 14-to prevent the same from receiving a coin .and have connected the device which must be operated by the calling party to open the chute with the spring so that the act of opening the chute to permit of the deposit ofthe colin Il,

I prefer to lock the arm 28 in a position toretain the spring under tension afterthe lever 24r and arm 19 havebeen released, these parts when released being returned to their normal positions by a spring 32 connected to the lever 19. To accomplish this I have provided the arm 28 at its upperl end with a projection, such asl a roller 33, 'and have mounted on the upper portion of the casing a detent lever 34 which has one endpivotally supported at 35 and has its other end arranged to be moved into and out of the path of the projection 33 on thearm 28. A spring 3 6 holds the lever 34 normally in its lowermost position and when the arm '28 is moved rearwardly the projection 33 will engage the lower edge of lthe lever 34 and elevate the same to permit switch board at the -central station the op-` erator inquires as to the connection desired by thecalling party. If the connection is made the coin is accepted and deposited in a coin receptacle, indicated at 37 in the lower part of the casing 2. If the connection cannot be made the coin is returned to the calling party and serves as notice that the connection requested cannot be made. Consequently, itisnecessary that the coin when first deposited in the chute 14 and after; it has caused the actuation of the calling signal shallbe retained in such a position that it can be diverted in either one of twodirections at the will of the operator at the central staticn. In the present mech-v anism this is accomplished by causing the coin, which is indicated at 3S, in Fig. 2. to

Arrangedabove these coils is an armature de pivotally supported between its ends so that when current sent through the polarized magnet in one direction to-energize one coii, one end of the armature will move downward and the other up and when the other coil is energized the armature will move in the opposite direction. The lever 34 has a lug or lateraiiy extending projection Li which eX- tends above one end ot the armature and is so positioned that when the magnet is so energized that the opposite end of the armature is attracted the irst-mentioned end will engage the projection 45, elevate the lever 34 and thus release the arm 28 and permit the spring 3i to act. Preferably, the magnet is placed inthe calling circuit and is so wound that the light current utilized for operating the calling signal will net energize the same suiiiciently to attract vthe armature and when the central operator wishes to energize the magnet an additional electro-motive torce must be applied to the circuit.

In the present instance the disk is adapted to rotate through a quarter revolution upon each operation thereof and there are four of the projections 50 and four of the projections 39 spaced eoual distances apart aboutthe face of the disk. Mounted on a stud carried by the shaft il and rotating with the disk 40 is aplate 52v having four projections or teeth 53, as shown in Fig. 2. Mounted upon the arm 23 is a projection 5t which is so arranged with relation to the teeth 5 3 oi:Y the plate 52 that when the disk 40 and plate`52 have been'rotated through a partial revolution by the coin one ora the teeth 53 will be moved into the path of the projection 5t and will be engaged thereby, thus forming a direct 'connection between the diskand the arm 23 and causing the disk to complete its movement through ninety degrees of a revolution. rll`he shape of the projections or teeth 53 are such that when the disk i0 has completed an operative movement and is in its normal position the tooth following the tooth 'just acted upon' by the arm '28 will lie out et' the path ot the projection carried by that arm, thus permitting the arm to return to its idle position without engaging any part connected with'the disk. Further, this arrangement of the teeth'permits the arm 23 to be moved through its full stroke without adecting the position of the disk unless there is a coin interposed between the arm and. the stops on the disk. Thus, should the arm be actuated accidentally or by mistake the record will not be affected. In this manner the collector is protected against incompetent or careless operators at the central station. rllhe direct engagement between the tooth of the plate 52 and the arm 28 releases the pressure on the coin which has by this time been moved overa branch chute 55 and permits the coin to drop through said branch chute' into the coin receptacle 37.
iin order to restore the operative connection between the catch l0 and the lever 16- after the coin has been deposited in the receptacle means are provided for rocking the lever G about its aXis to cause the arm 9 to again engage the catch. To this end the lever is projected beyond the roller 8 and hasI a portion 56 lying in the path of a projection or roller 47 on a lever 48 pivotally supported on the aXis of the armature 4J: and having a portion 49 extending across the armature, provided with lips arranged on opposite sides of the axis of the armature and adapted to be actuated when the armature moves in either direction. Consequently, when the armature is actuated in a direction to release the spring the projection 47 will engage the portion 56 of the lever 6 and will move the lever about its aXis to reengage the arm 9 and catch 10. This movearat'e and ,break the circuit beforev the several parts have completed their movements the upper end of the contact member 5 Aisprovided with a recess 46 within which, when the parts are in their normal posi tions, the projection 47 will lie, thus permittingl the contact member to move away from its coperating member 4 to break the circuit. However, the upward movement of the lever 48 will cause the projection to move out of the recess and engage the adjacent portion of the contact member 5, thus holding that member against movement away from its coperating contact member and maintaining the circuit through the magnets. In addition to insuring that the magnets will be energized for a time suflicient to allow the several parts to complete their movements the above device for maintaining the contactmembers in engagement also eliminates the sparking of these contact members, as it makes it necessary for the circuit to be broken first at the central station. Consequently, when the contact members 4 and 5 are separated the circuit is dead and there is no spark. This is im portant because the sparking decreases the efficiency of the contact points and in isolated stations it is difficult to keep the points in a condition to Vprovide a good contact if there is any sparking.
' If the central operator is unable to make the connection requested by the calling party the coinis, as above stated, returned to that party. To accomplish this I provide means whereby the stop 12 on the detent lever may be moved a distance sufficient to'.

In order that this movement may be lmparted to the stop 12, I have mounted the same on the lower end of the lever 58 which is mounted onthe same center, 7, on which the lever 6 is mounted. The lever 58 has an arm 59 connected by a pin and slot connection with a lever 60 which is pivotally mounted on the axis of the pivoted armature 44 and has a part,indicated at 61, projecting'over that end of said armature opposite the end which is adapted tooperate the lever 34 to release the spring 31. Consequently, when the coil of the magnet is energized and the adjacent end of the armature drawn down the opposite en d will be elevated and will engage the part 61 of the lever 60 and through its connection' with the lever 58 will move the latterV and the stop'12 in a direction to move the'stop tow'ardvthe end of the slot 13 and increase the distance between theisame and the pin 3 9. In order to restore the operative relation between the catch and the arm 9 of the lever 6 when` the v'coin isthus returned the lever 6 has a finger 62V arranged in the path of the end ofthe lever 60, and the movement of this lever to release the coin also moves the lever 6 in a direction to cause the arm 9 to againengage the catch 10.
As above stated any suitable counting mechanism may be employed and, vin the present instance, I have utilized a well known form of counter comprising a series of alined counter wheels, as indicated at 63, and provided with the usual transfer mechanism which, in the present instance', is `mounted on a shaft 64. Inasmuch as this counting mechanism is well known it is not deemed lnecessary to here describe and show the same in detail. Suffice it to say that the units counter is provided with a gear 65 which mesheswith a gear 66 on the transfer shaft 64. The transfer mechanism is loosely mounted on the shaft 64 and this enables me to utilize this shaft as a driving shaft for the countersV by -rigidly securing the gears 66 thereto. The transfer shaft 6 4 also has secured thereto a gear 67 which meshes with a gear 68 on the shaft 41, which latter shaft has secured thereto a second gear 70 which meshes with a gear 71 secured to the disk 40. This latter gear may be attached to the.. disk in any suitable manner 4but as here shown it comprisesan annular flange secured to the rear face of the disk and pro-I ,vided 0n its outer periphery with teeth constituting the'gear 71 and on its inner face with projections 72 constituting ratchet teeth, and coperating with a pawl 73 to hold the disk land the connected mechanism against reverse. movement. T he ratio of the gearing is such that a quarter rotation of the disk 40 will advance the units counter wheel of the counter a distance sufficient to register the value of the coin. The counter wheels 63 .are preferably so mounted that fthey can be reset to zero and to this end each counter has secured thereto a pawl 74 adapted, when registering movement 1s 1mparted to the counter wheel, to move over the counter shaft which has a longitudinal notch 76. When it is desired to reset the mechanism the counter shaft is rotated and the notch in the shaft picks up the several pawls and counter wheels and brings them to zero position. In order, however, that the counter wheels may be rotated is is necessary that they should be disconnected from the driving mechanism, which mechanism is locked against movement. I have, therefore, mounted the counter shaft in arms 77 which are pivotally mounted on a shaft 78 and are so arranged Athat when moved about theiraxes the counter wheels will be carried toward or away from the transfer mechanism. In order to mamtaln a check upon the operation of the machlne I prefer to provide a total counter which is never reset and which will indicate the total amount of money which has been deposited in the machine. Thus by noting the (lider-v ence between the present indication on the total counters and the last previous record taken therefrom the amount of money received in the interval can be ascertained.l
As here shown a second group of counter wheels 79 are mounted immediately in the rear of the counter 63 and are driven from a gear 80 on the shaft -11 in the same manner that the counter wheels 63 are driven. These total counters are provided with transfer mechanism as are the detail counters.
To enable a more complete check to be kept from the collections made from the various stations l prefer to provide each machine with means for taking a record from both the detail and total counters. This record may be taken in any suitable manner and, 'in the present instance, I have shown the counter wheels as comprising type wheels and have provided means for printing a record from the wheels onto a' slip of paper. rThe type wheels may be inked in any desired manner but lt have here shown an inking ribbon 81 extending about the counting mechanism and guided on rollers 82. One of these rollers 82 has a gear 83 'meshing with a gear 84 on the shaft 78, which gear is connected by an intermediate gear 85 with a gear 86 on the detail counter shaft. Thus, each operation of the detail counter shaft to reset the counters Will impart movement to the roller 83 and advance the ribbon. Tt is preferable that -means should be provided whereby a record must necessarily be printed before access can be had to the money receptacle and l have, in the present instance, so arranged the printing mechanism that the act of opening the door 87 leading to the money receptacle will operate the printing devices to take a record from the counters. lin the present arrangement of the device T have provided a platen 88 adapted to engage such type of the two counters as are in printing position. This platen is carried by a swinging plate 89 pivotally mounted at its rear edge,as shown at 90. Preferably, the platen is adjustable on the plate bv means of screws 91L1 to enable the impression to be regulated. The plate is swung about its axis to cause the same to move toward or away from the platen by means of a lever 91 having a projection 92 arranged to engage the forward portion of the plate 89. This lever is loosely mounted on a shaft 93 and connected with the plate 89 by a spring 9a. When the movement of the lever 91 is unrestricted it will move about its axis until the plate rests upon the shaft 93. The lower arm of the lever 91 has a projection 95 arranged adjacent to the edge of an inwardly extending plate or arm 96 ri idly secured to the door 87 and moving t erewith. The length of the lever 91 is such that the projection 95 will just clear the-curved edge of the `arm 96 but this edge is provided with a cam surface, such as a projection 97, which, when the door is moved in either direction, will engage the projection 95 and rock the lever about its axis. lVhen the door is closed the projection 95 on the arm will lie in front of the projection 97 and upon the. outward movement of the door the projection 97 will rock the lever 91 in a direction to move the platen toward the type wheels, thus causing the paper which rests upon the platen to be pressed against the ribbon and an impression taken fromthe type wheels. When the door is closed the leverf91 will be rocked in the opposite Idirection and no impression will be taken from the wheels. The projection 97 is arranged so close to the door 87 that thej printing mechanism will be operated before the door is opened far enough to permitaccess to be had to the money receptacle.. This door also controls the resetting of the detail counters,
so that they cannot be `reset until after a record has been printed therefrom. To thi? end one of the supporting arms-77 Afor the counter shaft is provided with a downwardlv extending portion 98 having a roller 99 at its lower end adapted to ride over the curved surface of the arm 96 carried bv the door. So long as the roller 99 is in engagement with the arm 96 the counter wheels will be held in engagement with the transfer mechanism and will be locked against resetting movement,- but when the end of the arm has passed the roller the counter wheels may be moved downward to permit of their rotation. l prefer that the counter wheels should be held normallv in engagement with the transfer mechanism bv means of a MPO spring 100 and have provided means where- Y by the first movement of the resetting shaft to reset the counter wheels will move the latter out of engagement with the transfer' mechanism. Thisv mechanism comprises a cam. 101 secured to the resetting shaft'ainl coperating with a second cam 102 mounted on a iixed part of the machine: such as the transfer shaft and held against rotation. The two cams have recessed portions which lie adjacent one to the other when the counter wheels are in their .normal position. lll/'hen the counter shaft is rotated the recessed portions are moved out of alinement and the wider portions of the cams come into engagement and force the counter wheels downward. As soon as the resetting movement is completed the counter wheels arereturned to their operative positions. The paper may be fed to the platen in any suitable manner but l prefer that'it should be .in the form of slips or sheets, one of which will be placed in position on the platen by the collector each time he collects the money scribed, the combination, with a counter, and 6 from the station. Upon opening the door a spring to actuate the same, of a signaling to make the next collection a record will bedevice, a coin chute, a device arranged to be printed upon this slip and this record is removed and turned in at .the oiiice with the money collected and a new slip 'placed on the platen. These record slips not onlyT indicate the amount of each collection but they also are marked to indicate the grand total of all the registrations at this station so that by a comparison of a givenslip with the last previous slip on file it is easy to ascertain whether or not said slip is theonly slip which has been printed since the'printing of said previous slip. If desired, `an electrotype may be provided, as indicated at 105, to yprint on the slip the number ofthe station or instrument, thereby identifying each slip with the particular station where it was printed.
The operation, together with the purposes and advantages of the same, have been clearly set forthin the foregoing description of the several parts of the mechanism and it will beunderstood that while I have shown 'and described one embodiment of the invention, this has been chosen for the purposes' of illustration-only and I do not desire to be limited lto lthe details. of construction, for obvious modifications will occur to -a person skilled inthe art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by 1. 'In a "mechanism of the character described,'the combinatiomwith a counter and Apower mechanism to actuate the same, of a device to actuate a calling signal, a manually actuated device to control the operation of said signal actuatin device, and means oper- Vated by said manual y actuated device to put said power mechanism in ycondition to lopere ate said counter.
