Description

{'rlnecn w; YARRELL, or VLrr'rtnfroiv, NORTH-CAROLINA Letters Patent'No. 112,667, dated Merch 14,1871.
IMPRovEMFNT IN WATER-WHEELS.
` The Schedule referred t6 lx1 these Letten: Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt may concer-a: l y
Be it known that I, PIERCE W. YARBELL, of Littleton, lin the county of Halifax and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WaterNVheels;` andI do herebydeclare the following tobe a' clear. and exact description `of the nature thereof, sucient to enable others skilled in the art to which my inventionappertains to fully understand i and usethe same, reference being had to the'accompanyingl drawing making part of this specification, in
which-'- i p Eigure lis a side elevation oi'- the wheel. VFigure 2 is a central vertical,l section ofthe casing, and showing the removable foot and arms.
Figure 3 is atop oripla-n view thereof; j Similar letters of .reference indicate corresponding parts in the severalfigures.`
i Y My inventiunvis an improvementfin'the kclass ofwater-wheels, and consists `in a reversible casing and removablefoot and arms, whereby the wheel may be i made either right or left-handed. Y
i It also consists iu an improvement ou the wheel for whichV Letters Patent were granted to me March 29, 1870, whercbv thew-h'eel is adapted to be run with a scroll casing.
A representsa scroll casing,-` which may be offordi# nary form and construction; f
i represents a foot, which is `to be bolted to the casing, and forms mean's for supporting the shaft or spindle@ of the wheel throughthe -nsualstep a.
D are `the arms for bearing and stcadying the spin vdle, which, `in the present case, are three in number,
and are to be bolted tothe casing ina manner similar to the foot B, the openings for the screws or bolts coiiucidingwith eachother, in order that the foot may be bolted to the casingv in the position now occupied bythe arms, and 'vice tersa, for purposes to be hereinaftcr'explained.
movable therefrom. p p
, When the wheel is placedin' thecasing the shaft is firmly supported in place by'means of the piece E and arms D.; i i
`When the wheel is tobe removed the piece E is uubolted from the armsl D, andthe former is then readily displaced without disturbingr the casing.
When it fs desired to havea right or loft-handed wheel, I firstrernovc the arms, wheel, and foot, and
Y A piece E, forms part ofthe arms, and is made retheureverse the casing. I now` secure said arms and footcorrespondingly in place on the casing, the wheel being previously reversed on the shaft. Aiix the piece E,'and the wheel is in condition to run-in the desireddirection relatively to the stream or flow of water.
Thel wheel yF is constructed somewhat similarly to the wheel shown `in my former patent, with this exception, vthat the `pairs of buckets have no spaces between their inner ends, such construction not being practical for a scroll casixng.
In4 the present case the bucket-s have their ends united, as at x, or are somewhat V or U-shaped.
As the water is admitted tothe wheel it presses upward and downward upon the surfaces ofthe buckets, thus operating the wheeland relieving the shaft iom pressure on its bearings, and enabling the wheel to run with 'great power.
By making-the upper sides of the buckets` a little longer than the lower sides, by giving them a greaterv curve anduniting them below the center of the periphery of' the drum'to which they are attached, the upward pressure serves to relieve the step of the weight ofthe wheel and shaft when running, aswell as to counteract the weight or pressure of'the water, so that there is less friction vwhen'I the wheel is set in motion than at any other time when rotated.
This invention will be found to be simple and eiect` ive for the purpose stated. -V j Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let# ters Patent, is Y l. The series oi' buckets G G united at their ends,` as shown and described, andarranged horizontally on the periphery of the wheel, substantially as and for the purpose described;
A2. The combination, with the casing, ofthe removablel'oot and the removable arms, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In `combination with the shaft of the wheel and the arms D, the removable piece E, arranged and operating as described. i v
lhe above signed' by me this 2d day of December, 1870.
A PIERCE. W. YARRELL.
