To all4 luihom it niaytconcern i i jBe it known-that I, HENRY J GOEE, of Dubuque, inA the county ot Dubuquaand State 'of Iowa, have declare that the tbllowing is'a full, clear, aud exact description thereof', referencebeing` had to the accompanyingdrawing making part' of: this specilication, ;iu whichi 'Figure Lis a sectiontakencentrallythrougb my improved bracket or hangingv lamp. y i

This invention relates' to that class of lamps whi ch has the wick-tubes insulated ii'om the oil-reservoir, .but which are in communication therewith by means otsmallpipes ortubesL i l 'lhe .object 'of my` invention is to improve these lamps. i 'y 1 To" enable others skilled inthe art to understand my invention, I will describe its `construction and operation. i
, `Injthe accomp anying drawing I have represented standlanpbuttis equally-applicable to pendants,
chandeliers, lanterns, and other `forms ot" lamps adapted `for burni g` light hydrocarbon oils. i The b racketelamp, `lig. 1, consists of` a reservoir, A,
out horizontally `from said reservoir toand supporting a vertical ,wickiftuba J.` i
` The pipe E forms a oil-reservoir and the ,wick-tube, and this pipe, maybe jointed, as at D, or it may be rigid. i
Y'lheiscrew-cap" `alito the feedliole of the reservoir "Ajis perforated ,1toallowtheientrance of air to the reservoir, and to the bottom ot' this screw-cap a' a perforated basket, fr, is secured, which willfprevent the communication of flame with .theinterior ot the reservoir through the a-i1inlet`orifice. .f i
`Another ganzecchambeigc', is applied inside of' the pipe E. i i i i The outer end of the pipe E is connected to the wick-tube J by means otj abox, Il, `the side got' which is finely perforated, or formed ot' wire gauze, for the i purpose of preventingtlame from communicating with the oil-reservoir through the pipe Il. f The wick-tube is madeslghtly-larger'than the wick which itis designed 1fcceive, and the' lower end of i this tube terminates in an enlargement, J', which forms a chamber-beneath the wicktube proper for receiving i the surplus wick, as clearly shown. The burner K,`w hicli .niay he of any of the-well known or improved Aforms has a short dat tube, t, se-
J, and this ln'ildsf-the burnrrliuplace.
c o rrr, Ao ri 4nu B U c un, I-c w A.
i `invented a new and improved Lamp; and I dhereby- `my`inventiouapplied to a bracketflamp and also to a q applied toa stand-plate, B, and a pipe, lil, extending communication between the.,
oil-reservoir A over the opening which leads `into thecured 'to it, which lits into the upper end of thel tubei l, letters .Patent Nb. `112,586, daad nach 1 4, 1871."
iMPeoir'EMENTiN LAMPS.Y
" Schedule :Hfen-ed to nfthese Letters Patent and making of the `same. i
will be seen, by reference to tig. 1, that the enlarged extension J'of the wick-tube will afford a sup.- por-t or leg for the lamp when it is put upon a table to till aud clean it.
`The lamp shown intig.-2 consists of a cylindrical oil-reservoir, A, having a passage vertically through it, into which is arranged the wick-tube J.
lhe cross-rods s s and theshort pipe E serve' as means" for; connecting the reservoir .and 'wick-.tube -toget-her. j n
The lower endof the wick-tube J has a circular enlargement, J', on its lower end, which is externally screw-threaded, for securing the reservoir and its tube to a stand, T. The tube Ein this lamp is rigid. In all-other re.- spects this lamp ot' tig. 2 is constructed like the lamp of lig.1. V w
It willbe seen from the above description that Il have improved the insulated wick-tube lamp; by the application of finely perforated metal or-ganzewire at levery point where lllame Wouldbe Vliable to` communi'- cate with the oil reservoir, thus making this classfot' lamps perfectly safe.l
I have also proyided'xfor the use of wicks which are 'I longer than the wick-tubes by providing chambers 'bef low the Wickftubes for thereceptacl'e ot surplus wick.
I amaware 4that wire-gauze protectors have been applied in connection with the feed-opening, oil-outlet orifice, and other parts oi' lamps; and therefore'I do, not claim on this part of my lamp anything more than the special manner shown by me of applying such wire-v gauze protector. Nor do Iclaim any lamp in which theiexterior of the wick-tube is exposed to the fluid withiuthe oil-reservoir; but
What I do'claim as my invention, and desire to se.
eure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The flattened isolated wick-tube, one-side of vwhich is formed to a greater or lesser extent` of 4wiregauze, and said wire-gauze portion inclosed b y an en larged chamber, F, which connects with a small tube, E, leading from the oilreservoir,..all in' the manner herein described and shown.
2. The'llattened wick-tube J, with the enlarged surplus wick-holding tube portion J constructed and Witnesses i JUDsoN SgGrIArrx, y W. G.- GHAMBEnLAN.
