i i Letters Patent No. 112,569, dated March 14, 1871.
IMPRVEMENT IN sAws.
Thlesclieldule referred to in these Letters Patent and making park of the same.
I, JAMES E. EMERSON, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer in the State of New Jersey,haveinvented certain1 Improvements inl Saws, of' which the follow-y V `ing is aspecication. f
y l Theiinvention consistsinfthe form that some of the, teethonythe saw are `made to have, the kind of set given to the, teeth,'and`the,arrangement of such `teeth #in Stich manner asto forni the saw. i "1*In'the,diawingf+1` LQ Y Figurel isafsection`of`a`sawbladc, showing two `differentyhindsffof-teethon tlie'same blade;
` Figure 2is'an edge view of onel edge `of the saw, l lhav-inglteethiwith-single p0ints3and teethonl Q w Y y y y 3 Figure 5 is an Vedgeviewof` the same, showing the lhasithe twin teeth a a r1/,1 and filed so that the points fafshallrscore the woodon one` side ot' the ker?, while ,i 1tl1e-`poil1 ts.awillinilike manner score the wood on l fthe-oppositeside"ofi"theker L `lheseteeth au ware set in `such manner' as `that l lthe points afw-ilLproject the'proper dis-tance from the side of `the saw-blade,*and the pointsw in `like mamA l ner project frorn :the `opposite side of the saw-blade and keepthe sawfblade froni` binding in its ker.
-Teeth b b are twinciearer-teeth, and do not project l i as `far asthescoringtpointsof the teeth a.
Teeth b have no set injthe1n,`andlare used for planjing or clearing out the woodithat teeth w score ofi' at y thesides ofthe kerQjandidi'er in forni from teeth a 'only in.:tl1eir being shorter, having'no set, and being iil'edto have a different shapeof the clearing or plan- :ing-edge at the points b andlb", as seen in iigs'. land 3 r of the twin teeth, andlso that thecutting-edge shali on askew, and 'onorlneariy-on a horizontal line when thebladeisperpendicnlar.
sameoi' nearly the sameQandin `the same direction y across the edge oil` the`saw,Whetherling point b or given ,by-
Bythis fornl of clearer orplaning-teeth the cut'of` the toothiis similarin its action on the wood to that of a skew-rabbetV plane, as one side of the cutting-y edge of the tooth is in advance of the other., and takes hold of'and removes the Wood from the kerf with less eiort from the operator thanl if' the cuttingedge took hold of the wood at right angles with the direction 'of the saw in the operation-of sawing The teeth a are set by twisting them in pairs across the line of the saw, incontradist-inction to setting or bending to the sides, which gives. the set as seen in edge views in figs. 2,3, and 5.
By this twisting ot ,theteethA to give tc them the necessary set there is no danger of breaking them, as saw-blades that are so hard and brittle that it is impossible to set the teeth' by the ordinary saw-sets now in use can be twisted to have all the set required, and no danger of breaking orl cracking; ,and further, the tooth that is twisted to have the necessary set is stronger, and has a better position with relation to i therscoring olf the fibers of the Wood, than if set" by bending to one side as is ordinarily done.
The teeth are arranged in alternate pairs, that is,
cleareror planer twin teeth b alternate with scoring twin teeth 4a the entire length of the saw; or there may be` two twin teeth a alternated by one twin tooth b, and not depart from my invention.
Having thus described my invention,`
1What I claim, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
, 1. The clearer twin tooth b, having cutting-edges b'- and b, constructed in the manner herein-described.
2. The saw-tooth a, having the points a' and a set Vto the opposite sides of the blade by twisting them at an angle with the sides of the blade of the saw, in the manner shown. l a l 3, The combination, in a saw, of the twin teeth a,
having scoring-points a and a, set tocut the width` by twisting, as -herein shown, and twin clearer-teeth b, having the planing-edges b and b, to cnt on askew,
in the manner and for the purpose described. i a JAMES E. EMERSON.
