H. J. DREW. Magazine `1"ire-rrr1f Patented March 14, .1871.
itueaaw: 111301211111111 f/2727 Jwr a N. PETERS. PhoIo-Lnhnguphur. wmhmgwn, n.1;
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE HENRY J. DREW, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS.`
IMPROVEMENT IN MAGAZINE-GUNS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,563, dated March 14, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. DREW, of Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Repeating' Fire-Arms 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figures l and 2 are different sectional elevations of my invention and of the mechanism of a Winchester rifle, with which my invention is connected and b v which it is opera e4.
This invention relates to an improvement on the Winchester riiie,its object being to prevent the eyes of persons using the same from being injured by its discharge, and also to protect the mechanism from the intrusion of dirt, said improvement consisting of a metallic cover for the opening in the breech, through which empty cartridge-shells or unexploded cartridges are thrown out, said door being connected with the vertically-slidin g cartridgebearer by means of links or rods, so as to be automatically operated thereby-that is to say, 'thrown open when the cartridge-bearer is raised, and closed when the same is drawn downward into the position it occupies when the gun is discharged.
Referring to the drawing, a isthe verticallysliding cartridge-bearer of the Winchester rie, which, with its coactve mechanism, it
- is unnecessary here to describe.
bis a metallic cover hinged to the breech near the forward end of the opening, through which the cartridge-bearer discharges its load, which cover is large enough to close said opening when shut down over it.-
c are parallel rods of equal length, jointed at one end to the inside of the cover, and at the other end tothe upper part of the cartridgebearer, one of said arms being placed at each side of the cover and bearer, the office and operation of said arms being to throw the cover upward when the bearer rises with a cartridge or shell, in order to admit of the ejection of the same, and to pull the cover downward, so as to close the chamber, when the cartridge-bearer is drawn downward, so as to be ready for the explosion of the charge.
The cover, when closed, prevents the eyes ot' the person using the piece from being iujured by leakage, back-fire, or bursting, and also protects the internal mechanism of the gun from dust, dirt, and exposure to the weather.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cover, cartridgebearer, and connecting-rods, as specified.
HENRY J. DREW.
