Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
THOMAs L. HANKIN, OF LYNDON, xANsAs, Assrenon TO HIMsELF AND D. W. ROOKWELL, OF ELYRIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN RFRIGERATING SHOW-CASES.
Specification forming part of -Letters Patent No. 112,493, dated March 7, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. RANKIN, of Lyndon, in the county of Osage, and in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerator Show- Case; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a refrigerator show-case or window, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my :invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a vertical section of a refrigerator show-case.
A represents the bottom, and B the baek,'of my show-case, made solid, of any suitable material. The front C, as well as the sides and thelid D, are provided with double glass, as
shown, leaving a dead-air chamber between theglass. At the upper edge ot' the back B is `attached a `V-shaped pan, E, extending downward to near the bottom of the case, in which pan the ice is to be packed. In the bottom of this pan are one or more holes for the ,water to pass out and into a trough, G, from In cases where a show-window is to be made into a refrigerating-window for exhibiting perishable articles to passersby, the ice-pan isto be arranged above, giving it a fall of about four inches to the foot, which would gather the melted frost or condensed moisture to the lowest part of the pan, where it would be gathered in troughs and conducted to outlet.
These show-cases can be made to show any kind of perishable goods for days without deterioration, and at the same time be very attractive to passers-by, exhibiting a'glistening frost when the thermometer may be 1000 out side.
The restaurantkeeper can expose his cold dishes; the butcher his meats in a deliverycase as he drives aroundV town; the iish, oyster, and game dealers can have their whole Windows arranged on this plan, and on the condensation plan, without any air-space, by one thickness of glass.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the show-ease AB O D, icepan E, trough G, and outletftube a, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day ot' January, 1871.
THOS. L. RANKIN.
