To' a'ZZ'wFwm' it may concern Be-it known that we, HERBERT F. ProvvAlanna and itmvm H. VVHITNEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Melrose and Rehohoth, respectively, in the counties of Middlesea: Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Cutting Bottom {P eces for Paper Cups, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for hottompieces for paper cups and other receptacles.
-The machine embod'ing this invention involves taking a strip of paper from a roll and passing it between a pair ofprintingrolls by which it is printed on one or-both sides, at regular intervals, and then passing it to a pair of feed-rolls which act to feed forward the strip, and in case it is required that the hottom-piecesshall have deposited upon them a small quantity of parafin-Wax the lower feed-roll is arranged in a reservoir containing? liquid paraffinwax, and upon rotation -of said roll a thin layer. is deposited on the under side of the strip. The strip then passes to another pair of feed-rolls, and between the two feed-rolls the strip may be reversed, if depunch and die through which the bottom-pieces are forced sired, to bring the paraiiin-coated'side uppermost, and, in such case, reversing-means is arranged between said two pairs or" feed rolls. The strip then passes to a punch and die by which the bottom-pieces are cut from the strip and are forced down into and through the die; and associated with said is a flange-forming means by a suitable plunger formed on them. The strip from which the sen out passes between a-pair of feed-rolls and by said rolls is fed forward in a direction away from the machine.

In case it is not necessaryto reverse the strip said rereaming-means will be omitted Referring to Fig. 8 showing the second pairof feed-rolls 30, 31, it will he observed that a quick adiusting-means is provided for the upper roll SO consisting-of a handlever 32 connected to a'coarse pitch adjusting-screw 33. Such adjustment is desirable in loca izing the printing-strip with respect to the punch and die, to be hereafter de-' scribed.
The strip 10 is fed forward by the feedrolls 30, 31, to a punch andldie by which bottom-pieces of any suitable size and shape,
are cut therefrom, and-said punch and die are or, may be of any suitable construction, so far as this invention is concerned, and,

Arranged beneath the punch and die is a fianging-device by which a marginal flange is formed-on the bottom-piece, and, as here shown, said flangingdevice consists of a hanging-ring 45, arranged beneath and cone centric to the die, andaplurality of radially disposed fingers 46, are arranged beneath the flangiug-ring which are yieldingly supported against outward radial movement by :1;

The fianging-ring acts to form the flange, and the fingers respectively engage the numerous projections at the edge of the flange, and act to bend said projections in- Word, so that, the, flange will be formed at a pronounced right angle, instead of being bevel-gear 70,
