Be-it known tat-'1', HENRY HENinoH, a citizen of thei'Uni'ted Statesof America, re-
- siding in New York, in the borough of Man- -hattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Rolling Finger- Rings, of which the following isa specification.
. This invention relates to improvements in machines for rolling seamless finger-rings in which the blanks, which are formed by means of dies, are transformed .into completely finished rings of the required 'size 'and cross-section, and in which the exact size'to be produced is accurately controlled a visual index so as to permit the removal of the finished ring at the proper time.
q The invention consists more specifically of a machine for rolling seamless finger rings provided with a visual index by means of which the exact size of the finger-ring rolled on the mandrel of the machine is indicated, the special construction of said visual index being fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims. p
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front-elevationof my improved machine for rolling finger-rings, partly in section through the supporting table and showing the visual index device, Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 2, 2, Fig. 1, Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontalsections respectively on lines 3,.3 and 4, 4, Fig. 1, drawn on a larger scale, Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section showin the mandrel and operating rollers and %he visual index for rolling a finger ring of predetermined size, and Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on line 6,6, Fig. 5. v v
Similar letters of referencein'dicat'e corresponding parts throughout the different figures.
Referring to the drawings, A, represents the table of my improved machine for roll- "ing seamless finger-rings. On the table A is supported an upright standard a, which is provided with a journal-bearing for a horizontal shaft 8, on the front-end of which is mounted a grooved ring-forming roller 6 which is continuously rotated by suitable gear-wheel transmission which is applied to the opposite end of the shaft 8 ;(not shown in the drawings).
',On the main-shaft is mounted a' gearwheel' 9 which meshes with a pinion g on with a gear-wheel a short shaft a that is supported in a bracket-bearing 9 which is attached to the upright standard a. The pinion g meshes g", the shaft of which also turns-in a bearing.
v Adjacent to the gear-wheel g is arranged a pinion 9' which is keyed to therear-end of the'mandrel-spindle .9 the front-end of which is provided with a square socket for inserting a mandrel m on which the ringblank isplac'ed. The mandrel-spindle s is supported in a sleeve-shaped bearing m "which" is provided with a rectangular arm m thatis bolted to a vertical slide-piece D,
as shown in Fig. 2.
The slide-piece D is provided with a dovetailed rar-pbrtion which is guided in corresponding ways d on the front-standard a,
said slide-piece being provided with an extension D} at its lower endthat extends through an opening in the table A, and is provided with a counterweight (not shown) that is suspended by means. of a rod w hav- "ing a hook-shaped upper end from the lower end of the extension D as shown in Fig. 2. YVhenthe slide-piece D is in its lowermost position of rest the pinion g at the rear-end of the mandrel-spindle s is out of mesh with the gear-wheel 9 but when the slidepiece is raised the pinion 7 intermeshes with the gear-wheel g, so that rotary motion is imparted to the mandrel-spindle and the mandrel m on the front-end of the same.
Themandrel-spindle 5* is provided inter.- mediately of its length with a circumferential'groove m that is engaged by a setscrew m for'holding the mandrel-spindle in proper position in its sleeve-shaped bearing. The mandrel m is provided with a groove corresponding in size and shape with the ring to be rolled from the blank; different sizes and shapes requiring correspondingly grooved m'andrels.
Below the mandrel, infront of the slidepiece D, are arranged two pairs of supporting rollers n which support the cylindrical ends of the mandrel. The mandrel is pro vided with shouldered portions m" adjacent to the ring-carrying groove and between the supporting rollers for increasing the strength of the same and resisting the bending of the mandrel and the shifting of the samein longitudinal direction. The inner end of the mandrel m is made of square shape'so' as to fit in the corresponding socket of the mandrel-spindle. At both sides of the mandrel are arranged guide-rollers E which are provided with groovesfor holding the ring-blank, said guide-rollers being.
pivoted to the upper ends of laterally oscillating elbow-levers E that are fulcrumed to wing-shaped brackets e attached to opposite sides of the slide-piece D, the lower arms bow-levers E are connected by helical springs 6 with stationary points. on the slide-piece I), located below the fulcra of the elbow-levers E so that the guide-rollers are moved away from the ring-blank when the slide-plate F is lowered.
The auxiliary slide-plate F is arranged at the front of the slide-piece D' and guided thereon. Centrally thereof is arranged a projecting pin 03 which is engaged by the inner end of a lever L, which is weighted at its outer end, and which serves to lift the slide-plate F at the proper time. The weighted lever serves for counterbalancing the weight of the slide-plate F and of the parts attached thereto, and facilitates the lifting of the slide-plate so as to bring it from its lower position of rest into the working position. The counter-weight on the hook to on the one hand serves to lower the slide-piece D, while the weighted lever L on the other hand serves to raise the slide plate'F.
For the purpose of indicating the required size of the ring,- a horizontal finger f is located below .the mandrel and extended.v
over the lower part of the ring-blank, said finger-being arranged at the upper end of a vertical rod 7'' that is guided in a vertical bore f of the slide-piece D, said vertical rod being providedlwith a forwardly-extending rod i which passes through an elongated slot f in the slide-piece D to the outside of the same and engages the end of an index or pointer 71, which is fulcrumed to a sectorshaped scale-plate I that is attached to the upper front-part of the slide-piece Dand provided with graduatiqns at its outer arcshaped" end so as to indicate the ,diflerent sizes of finger-rings to be rolled, -As soon as the pointer i arrives at the numbercorresponding to the size of the ring, the motion of the mandrel-spindle is interrupted, the slide-piece returned to' its lower position by turning the crank-shaft d, by which motion theguide-rollers are moved sidewise of the mandrel, owing to the return of the sllde-plate by 1ts counterweight and the action of the springs 6 so that the completed .ring can be removed with the mandrel" by removing the latter from its socket. A new blank is then placed on the mandrel and the same returned to its position'in its spindle.
During the downward motion of the slidepiece into .its lowermost position of rest the vertical shank f of the finger 7 forms contact with a slide-rod is which is located in the bore 7 below the shank f and supported on a stationar arm 76 that is attached to the table A si ewise of the slide-piece D, so that the finger is lifted, together with its horizontal arm f and placed'into aposition close-to the mandrel, while the pointer is returned to the starting point on the scale,
as shown in Fig. 1. The scale-plate I is provided with an arc-shaped slot '2', concentric with the fulcrum of the pointer c', by which the scale-platemay be adjusted on its clamping screw 5 slightly higher or lower so as to permit the adjustment of the scale-plate to different sizes or ring-blanks.
After the 5 scale is adjusted and the pointer set to the proper graduation on the scale, the latter is clamped in position by the clamping screw and the special size of rings rolled until the desired quantity of the rings of a certain size isobtained.
The rolling of the blank into a finger-ring of the proper size is accomplished in the same manner as in finger-ring rolling machines heretofore in use, and requires. 'no special description in addition to the operation hereinbefore described in connection with the rolling parts of the machine.
The new and'important feature of this invention, resides in the size-indicating scale and index, as the rolling of the ring to the proper shape is accomplished by the automatic rolling: devices which are more specifically described in the pending application I claim-as new and desire to secure by Le ters Patent:
' 1. In a machine for rolling finger-rings, the combination of a mandrel, a slide-piece, a finger adapted to engage the inside of the ring-blank, while the latter is onthe mandrel, a vertical shank for saidfinger, asliderod guided in the slide-piece, and a station- .ary support for said slide-rod for raising rodraising the finger-shank when the slide- I piece is lowered.
I 3. In a machine for rolling finger-rings, the combination of a ring blank supporting mandrel, a vertically guided slide-piece having a guide-slot in its upper part, and supporting the mandrel, a finger below the mandrel and adapted to engage the inside of the ring-blank, a vertical shank for said finger, a horizontal arm extending forward from said shank through said guide-slot, a scale, and a fulcrumed index or pointer engaged by said forwardly-extending arm for moving the pointer over the scale and indicating the size of the ring.
4. In a machine for rolling finger-rings, the combination of a ring blank supporting mandrel, a vertically guided slide-piece having a guide-slot in its upper part and supporting the mandrel, a finger below the mandrel and adapted to engage the inside of the ring-blank, means for raising the finger by T the lowering of the slide-piece, a scale, means for adjusting the scale, and a fulcrumed pointer adapted to move over the scale and indicate the size of the ring.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, 1 have signed my name in presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
