To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH D. Enwnnnaa citizen of the United States, residing at Spencer, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to hinges and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a hinge which is composed of a plurality of hingedly connected sections two of which are secured to the door and the door jamb for permitting of the swinging of the door about an arc of a circle of 180, or substantially about a semicircular are so as to permit of the opening of the door into or out of a room as desired.

Another object of this invention. is the provision of a hinge as specified in which the sections are formed hingedly about a universal pivotal point, and they being shaped to form segments of a circle to permit of the free swinging of the door.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction combination and ar rangenient of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved hinge. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hinge showing the various sections in a folded position, and Fig. 8 is a view showing the improved hinge attached to a door and door casing.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the attaching leaves of the hinge, which have shanks 3 and 4 formed, for insertion into the cut out portions which are formed in the meeting edges of a door and a door casing respectively. The leaves 1 and 2 have arcuate outer edges as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and they are hingedly connected at their upper and lower ends respectively as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings,

to sections 5 and 6 of the hinge,which sections form segments of a circle and are hingedly connected to a segment 7. The segment 7 is interposed between the segments 5 and 6, and is of the same size as the size of segments 5 and 6 added together. The segments 5, 6' and 7 and the leaves 1 and 2 are hin ed,i'so that the segment will extend at an incline from the meeting edges of the door and the door casing and consequently from the surfaces of the leaves 1 and 2, when the door is in an open position, the faces of the various sections being positioned horizontally. ifhe sections 5, 6 and '7 form substantially one-half of a circle, and section 7 is hinged to the sections 5 at 8 and the sections 6 at 9, while the sections 5 and 6 are hinged to the leaves 2 and 1 as at 10 and 11 respectively.

In attaching the improved universal hinge to a door, the leaves 1 and 2 are attached to the edge of the door and the door casing, one leaf having the projection formed thereupon extending upwardly while the other projection extends downwardly as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This positions the various sections 5, 6, and 7 substantially in a horizontal plane, when the door is open and upon a swinging movement of the door, the various sections will move upon their hinged connections, for instance the section 5 will move on its hinged connection 10 with the leaf 2, and move the hinged connection 8 upwardly and the hinged connection 9 downwardly. Vfhen the door to which the hinge is attached is completely closed, the sections 5, 6 and 7 are positioned vertically, the sections 5 and 6 being fitted within recesses (not shown) which are formed in the edge of the door and the door casing for the reception of these sections for permitting a neat appearing and compact hinge. The sections facially abut against the other when they are in a folded position as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

In reducing the invention to practice certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

What is claimed is 1. In a universal hinge, attaching leaves and a plurality of hingedly connected sections hinged to the leaves radially about a universal axis.

2. In a hinge, attaching leaves, sections forming segments of circles hingedly con nected to said leaves, and a third section hingedly connected to said first named sections intermediate of their facing edges, said sections hinged and disposed radially about a universal axis for hinged movement to permit of the forward or rearward swinging of a door.

3.
