The metal thus received in the mold immediately cools sutticientlv to retain its Jorm, and constitutes the slug with the handling of which the succeeding operations of the machine are concerned. Preliminarily, however, the casting pot is lowered and then moved sidewise by the operation of cam drum'H2 as hereinhefore described, so -as to leave entirely clear the space beneath themold C. The trimming slide D follows the pot as it moves sidewise so as to reach the slug as the main slide C which carries the mold begins to lower. `While such main slide is descending, the angle of the slot (Z in lever D2 carries the bottom trimming knife D across the lower face of the mold so as to trim ott any depending portion of the slug, out such bottom-trimming slide and knife are thereupon retracted by the time the main slide nnishes its descent. rTransverse slide E which carries side trimming knife E is then rapidly moved directly over the mold C now occupying its lowerniost position and is locked in place by the raising of the dowel pin e3. The ejector plunger c is moved l up and ready to push the slag outot the mold as soon as slide lll thus locked. As has been previously explained, such plunger, in ejecting the slug, at the same time forces the same through the side trinming knife E, so that when the slug finally emerges through the bottom of the slide lll itis-in completely finished "form, having had both its bottom and sides trimmed to standard dimensions. As soon the ejector c has completed this opfratiiarA and moves down so as to clear said slide li, the latter starts back, having been unlrclted in the meantime by the withdrawal of dowel pin e3. At the same time that the slide E is moved in to the operative position just described, the carry-out lever F is also swung into its inner position. Such carry-out lever remains thus until the slide moves back again. Incidentally to such movement of the slide, the camslot e2 thereon catches the pin f2 on the linger f and compresses the spring f so as to permit said iin'ger to clear the slug until the end of the slot 'is reached whereupon the finger is vlorced behind the slug by such spring. The lever F does not itself move up to this time, or in other words, until the slide E has been restored to its outer position, andl it will be observed that it is the movement of the slide from its inner to such outer position that actuates the linger of the lever in the fashion just explained. -When the slide E -is thus restored to its outer position, the
lever F is swung outwardly so as to carry x the slug out into alinement with the open end of the galley G. The plunger F2 thereupon pushes the sluG into the galley, thus finishing the cycle oi: operations.
In order to prevent the heat of the casting pot B from rising directly and so raising the immediately superposed portion of the top or cover A toan uncomfortable temperature, an insulator is provided inthe .form of a number of horizontally extending sheet metal plates 522 (Figs. 1 and 3) fastened to the plunger operating lever bs. the combination of a slug casting mold; matrix-bearing members adapted to be supported against one end of said mold; means respectively adapted to supply molten metal to the other end of said mold, trim the corresponding end of the slug while still in the mold, separate said mold and matrix-bearing members, and eject such slug through such iirstmold-end; and a side-trimming device shiftable into operative position with respect to such first mold-end, so as to receive such slug when thus ejected.

matrix-bearing members adapted to be supportedagainst one end of said mold; means respectively adapted to supply molten metal to the other end of said mold, trim the corresponding end of the slug 'while still in the mold, separate said mold and matrixbearing members, and eject such slug through such first mold-end; a side-trini-- bearing members adapted to be supported` above said mold; means respectively adapted to supply molten metal to said mold from below, trimthe bottom of the slug while still in the mold, lower the latter, and push such slug upwardly therethroughyand a side-trimming device shiftable into position over said mold so as to receive such slug when thus pushed upwardly.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a substantially horizontally disposed slug casting mold; matrixbearing members adapted to be supported above said mold; 'means respectively adapted to supply molten metal to said mold from below, trim the bottom of the slug While still in the mold, lower the latter, and push such slug upwardly therethrough; a sidetrimming device shiitable into position over said mold so as to receive such slug when thus pushed upwardly; and means for removing such slug from such device.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of matrix-bearing members; a movable slug castin I mold adapted in one position to press one ace against said members; means coperat've with the other face of said mold to cast 1a slug therein; land a. shutter adapted to be interposed between said mold and members, when said mold is moved away from said matrix-bearing members.
