To all iii/1.0m it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN TISCHLER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at East Portchester, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Planes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpenters planes, and particularly to devices of this class designed for use in cutting out mortises in door frames, window frames and the like to receive the butts of hinges, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class, which may be operated in both directions or by a pushing or a pull ing movement, and which is simple in construction and operation; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a plane of the class specified constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 83 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a plane stock a which is of the form in cross.
section shown in Fig. 8, and comprises base plate a and side members a and the base plate a is provided with a large central opening a at each side of which and at the rear thereof the side members a of the stock are provided with raised ears a. The central aperture a is of suflicient extent in a direction longitudinally of the plane stock to permit the bit of the plane to be projected bodily downward through said aperture for a considerable distance so that it may be employed in planing or cutting the bottom of a recess such as a mortise or hinge recess or the like, while the bottom face of the stock rests upon the surface of the work surrounding said recess.
At a predetermined point rearwardly of the opening a", the base plate a of the stock is provided with a raised transverse member a having a downwardly and forwardly in clined top surface on which is placed the bit 5 of the plane, and rearwardly of the memher a, said base plate of the stock is also provided with another raised member a having a downwardly and forwardly inclined top surface, in which is a forwardly and backwardly ranging groove a in which is mounted a yoke-shaped block 0 the side portions 0 of which are provided at the top thereof with teeth 0 adapted to enter transverse grooves in the bit 7). I also provide a screw (Z which is passed forwardly through the transverse raised member a, and the rear end portion (Z of which is cylindrical in form, and provided adjacent to the screw portion with a reduced portion d forming annular shoulders (i and (Z and the reduced portion (Z fits in the yoke-shaped block 0, and said screw is provided with a head (Z and by turning said screw by means of said head the bit Z) may be adjusted forwardly and baclrwardly as will be readily understood, and according to the direction in which said screw is turned. It will be observed that the forward and backward movement of the screw (Z is occasioned by its being turned in the part a which is threaded to correspond with the thread on said screw, and that, that part of said screw in the block 0 is not threaded, the movement of said block being occasioned by the annular shoulders 61* and d Mounted transversely in the ears a above and rearwardly of the opening a in the base plate a of the stock, is a pin 6, and I also provide a lock handle lever f having an enlarged rear end portion f which forms a handle, and a forwardly directed wedgeshaped portion f which passes between the bit I) and the pin 6, and said part f is provided in the top thereof with a recess j" in which the pin 6 fits, and passed downwardly through the handle lock lever f is a screw 9 which bears on the bit 7) directly over the transverse raised portion a and which is provided with a milled head 9 By turning the screw 9 in one direction the front end of the wedge shaped portion f of the handle lock lever f will be pressed onto the bit 6 at h, and this forms of said lever a clamp lock for said bit of which the screw 9 forms a part as will be readily understood, and by means of which the said bit may be securely locked in any desired position of adjustment; and whenever it is desired to adjust said bit the screw 9 is loosened and the screw cl turned in the desired direction after which the screw 9 is again tightened, and said bit may be entirely removed for any purpose by loosening said screw 9 and pulling said bit out wardly and backwardly.
The stock a is also provided at the front end portion thereof with a handle 2', and in the operation of the device the handle 2' is grasped in one hand and the head f of the handle lock lever f in the other, and the device may be moved forwardly, or forwardly and upwardly, and backwardly, or backwardly and downwardly, according to the position of the work-piece or the frame,
or other article in which it is desired to form a mortise to receive a hinge butt.
As will be observed the plane stock eX- tends a considerable distance both forward and back of the opening a which is substantially in the center of the plane stock, and it will be obvious that the bit can be adjusted so as to cause it to extend through said opening and project to a considerable distance below the face of the plane stock to permit the plane to be used in forming mortises and other recesses, the plane bit being gradually adjusted downwardly and the plane being operated first in one direction and then in another during the formation of such mostises or recesses, so that the bit will out to the opposite ends of the same, while the bottom face of the plane stock is supported upon the surface of the work on opposite sides of the recess which is being formed. In this respect my improved plane differs from planes as usually constructed in which it is not possible to project more than a small portion of the bit adjacent to the cutting edge through the opening in the bottom of the plane stock and in which the said opening is located much nearer to one end of the plane stock than the other, thus precluding its use for the formation of mortises and other recesses. As indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings both the plane stock and the plane bit may be made quite narrow so that mortises and recesses such as are ordinarily desired in connection with woodworking can be readily formed thereby.
It will be noted that in my improved construction the adjusting screw d is provided with supports in the nature of bearings at different points longitudinally thereof. The threaded end of the screw finds a bearing in the threaded aperture in the boss or and a further bearing is provided by the yoke 0, which rests upon the boss a This construction precludes the screw from being deflected in such a manner as to bend it or make it bind in its threaded bearing aperture. It will also be noted that the bit is supported at three points in its length, to wit, at the edge of the aperture a on the boss a and on the yoke 0, and that the screw 9 which engages the bit substantially centrally of its length is directly over the boss, so that no matter how tightly the bit is clamped neither the bit nor the adjusting screw are bent or deflected from their normal position.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a carpenters plane, the combination with the main body having a bit aperture in the bottom thereof, and a beveled bit supporting face adjacent to the rear edge of said aperture, said main body being also provided with an integral boss in rear and at a distance from said aperture, having a threaded aperture therein, and with a second boss in rear of and at a distance from the first mentioned boss, of a yoke having a sliding engagement with said second boss and. resting thereon, said yoke being provided with means for engaging the bit to move it longitudinally, an adjusting screw engaging the threaded opening in the first mentioned boss and having portions engagsaid yoke, a bit supported upon said bit engaging face, said first mentioned boss and said yoke, and being thus supported at three longitudinally separated points, a lock lever above said bit provided with a set screw for engaging the bit above said first mentioned boss, and means connected with said main body for engaging the said lever on its upper side adjacent to the bit aperture whereby the bit adjusting mechanism Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Iatents,
