Letters Patent were issued to John D. Wilber, of Poughkeepsie, NewYorlgbearing date of February 10, 1863, No. 37 ,656, for a new form and construction of mowingmachines, j byhiin called theEurekaJ7 and DEWIT'r C. On the end of the finger-bar E there is a stout stud, which passes through the end of the arm H, in which it has a slight play.

Operation: When the machine is working upon smooth and even ground, the arm H, with the nnger-bar E, will be found to retain a position very nearly in the samey plane as the frame C C. But let one of the driving-wheels, say on the side C, pass any obstruction, thus tilting up that side, then, instead of raising up that end of the iinger-bar, the arm H, having a motion at ,0, prevents this end of the nnger-bar from still lying in close contact with,

the ground, making a slight rotation upon the stud a in the bearing F, and at the same time not interfering with the action of the scythebar.

Again, should thewheel upon the side G drop into any depression, the above action would be reversed simply, the iinger-bar still followingthe surface of the ground where the cutting is -to be done.

If, however, the wheel upon the side C i-s the one subject to these irregularities of motion, the construction of the joints at a and at d still admits of the'bar E retaining its desired position near the surface of the turf.

Having thus described the construction and operation of our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
