The notc 24 is formed so as to fit snugly around the liange/ 25 and in this manner" prevent the lubricant from. spreading'ver the tread 27 of the gether by means of a transversely extending bolt 30. Between the lower parallelends of the clamp 28 are secured a plurality of weighted plates 3l for the.,purpose of c stituting means for preventing the lubricat- -ing shoe 18 from jumping out of engagement with the Harige 25 of the wheel 26. ,A. chain 3 2 is secured. to the bolt as is illustrated in Fig. 6, and this chain passes around the T-joint 15 as illustrated in' Fig. 3 and constitutes a support for limiting the downward swing of the lubricating slioe '18. By ,carefully considering I1`ig., 5 it willhbe :seen that the pipe li extends into a passageway 33, which passageway communicates with an.ofl'set .passageway 34, ywhereby` the lubricant may be forced down` into engagement with the inner face of the flange 25 of the wheel 26, and thereby deposit lubricant at the desired point upon the flange 25.
The reservoirs `3 which arey placed upon either side of the locomotive are connected by means of a connecting pipe 35 to which connecting pipe is secured the supply pipe 10 above described.
.The operation of the device is as followszQThe lubricant is placed in the compartment 5 and lthe valve 21 is opened. The lubricant will then pass out through the pipe 20 through the T-jointl and down through the lubricating shoe 18 to the flangey 25 of the wheel 26. f In order thatthe-lubricant may not get gummy or clogged especially 'in col-d weather it liasbeen found preferable to pass a supplyof exhaust steam adjacent the lubricating compartment-5 as is providedlwip the structure as illustrated in 'i Fig. 3.
