Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 19141.
Application filed .Tune 1, 1913. Serial No. 771,619.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that 1, Aueusr JiiRcnNs, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 133 Springweg, Utrecht, Holland, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Fastening the Dangling End of a Broken Overhead Electric Conductor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention.
The invention relates to overhead electric conductorsior trolley systems and the like, and its object is to provide a new and improved means for drawing up and fastening the dangling end of a broken overhead electric conductor, to prevent short circuiting of the electric circuit and to reduce the danger of electric shocks and electrocution to human beings and animals liable to come in con tact with the broken end of the electric con-' ductor. a
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a pulley block adapted to be fastened to an overhead support adjacent the break of the electric conductor, a gripping device for clamping the dangling end of the electric conductor, and a rope connected with the gripping device and passing over the pulley of the said pulley block to permit of drawing the gripping device and with it the broken end into an elevated position.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pulley block and means for drawing the same into position on the supporting cross wire of a trolley wire or a similar electric conductor; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device with parts in position for raising the pulley block clamp and dangling end of the electric conductor; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the pulley block; and Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the clamping device.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device is used for raising the dangling end of a broken overhead electric conductor 1 to the supporting cross rod or wire 2 near the broken end of the said conductor 1. For the purpose mentioned use is made of a pulley block 3 provided at its casing 4 with a rope 5 adapted to be thrown over the supporting wire 2 to allow of drawing the pulley block 3 up to the said supporting wire and to fasten it thereto. For this purpose the casing 4 of the pulley block 3 is provided with a conical head 6 and with hooks 7 immediately below the conical head 6 so that when the pulley block 3 is drawn up by the use of the rope 5 then the head 6 finally passes up over the supporting wire 2, and one of the hooks 7 hooks onto the said supporting wire to hold the pulley block in raised posi tion and supported on the supporting wire 2. A rope 8 passes over the pulley 3 of the pulley block 3 and terminates at one end in branches 8 attached to the insulated handles of a gripping device 9, preferably in the form of a pair of tongs, having jaws 10 between which is clamped the broken end of the electric conductor 1, as shown in Fig. 2-. A spring 11 is interposed between the handles of the clamping device 9 so as to hold the jaws 10 in firm contact with the broken end of the electric conductor 1. It
will be noticed that after the pulley block 3 has been raised and attached to the supporting wire 2 then the gripping device 9 is attached to the broken end of the electric conductor, and then the operator pulls on the free end of the rope 8 to raise the gripping device 9 and with it the dangling end of the conductor 1. In order to prevent the rope 8 from return movement use is made of a serrated spring-pressed shoe 12 mounted in the casing 4: of the pulley block 3 and engaging the rope 3 so as to lock the clamping device 9 and the dangling end of the electric conductor 1 in raised position.
. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the dangling. end of the broken electric conductor is raised into safety position to'allow trolley cars to pass along the line without interference from the broken end of the electric conductor, it being understood, however, that a trolley car must pass the broken portion of the track under its own momentum. It will further be noticed that by raising the broken end short circuiting of the electric circuit is prevented and danger to passersby is removed. Although particular means have been shown, that is, the rope 5 for raising the pulley block 3 into position on the supporting wire 2, it is evident that the said pulley block may be hung onto the supporting wire 2 or other support by the operator climbing up a ladder or the like.
I claim 1. Means for drawing up and fastening the dangling end of a broken electric conductor, comprising a clamping device adapted to engage the torn dangling end of the electric conductor, a pulley block, a rope connected with the said clamping device and passing over the pulley of the said pulley block, and means for attaching the said pulley block to an overhead support.
2. Means for drawing up and fastening the dangling end of a broken electric conduc- 'tor, comprising a clamping device adapted to engage the torn dangling end of the electric conductor, a pulley block provided with a conical head and hooks below the head for engagement with an overhead support, and a rope connected'with the said clamping device and passing over the pulley of the said pulley block.
*3. Means for drawing up and fastening the dangling end of a broken electric conductor, comprising means for attaching the pulley block to an overhead support, a clamping device adapted to engage the torn dangling end of the electric conductor, a pulley block, a clamping shoe on the said pulley block, and a rope connected with the said clamping device and passing over the pulley of the pulley block, the said shoe holding the rope against return movement.
t. Means for drawing up and fastening the dangling end of a broken electric conductor, comprising a clamping device adapted to engage the torn dangling end of the electric conductor, a pulley block provided with a conical head and with hooks below the head, a rope connected with the said clamping device and passing over the pulley of the said pulley block, a clamping shoe on the pulley block engaging the said rope to lock the latter against return movement, and a second rope connected with the said pulley block for drawing the latter up on a fixed support and engagingthe said hooks with the support. I I
5. A device of the character described, comprising a pulley block provided with means for detachable engagement with an overhead support to hold it suspended therefrom, a clamping device for engaging the end of a wire, a rope secured to the clamping device and passing over the pulley of said block, and a rope secured to the pulley block for drawing the said block up to engage it with the said support.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of a clamping device adapted to engage the end of an electrical conductor, a rope engaging said clamping device designed to move the clamping device, a guide for said rope, an anchor for supporting said guide, and means connected with said anchor co-acting with said supporting means for raising said anchor to a position whereby the same may engage and be supported by said support.
7. A device of the character described, comprising a pulley provided with an upwardly projecting stein having a hook for engaging an overhead support, a clamping device, a rope secured to the clamping device and passing over the pulley of the pulley block, and a rope secured to the pulley block for drawing it up to engage its hook with the said support.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of a wire clamping member, a cable for actuating the same, means for guiding said cable, means for preventing a reverse movement of said cable, a support, an anchoring device for supporting said cable, guiding means for said anchoring device comprising a body and a plurality of hooks at the upper part, together with a substantially cone-shaped guard extending in an opposite direction to said hooks, and means connected with said body acting in connection with said support for drawing said anchoring device up and causing one of said hooks to interlock with said support.
9. In a device of the character described, a pulley block provided with a conical head and a hook below the said head, and a rope secured to the pulley block below the hook for drawing the pulley block up to engage its hook with an overhead support.
