DEVICE FOR PRACTISING WRITING.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Vroron Hansen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bowles, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented a new and Useful Device for Practising lVriting, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

An object of my invention is to provide a simple device for use by children before school age, or during the kindergarten period, in order that a child may obtain some preliminary practice in the art of writing the letters of the alphabet or other characters.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the indicated character which will be used by children of their own free will, and with the need of little, if any, aid from the parent or teacher.

In carrying out the invention a strip preferably of metal, is bent longitudinally on itself to provide opposite sides adapted to be slipped onto the side edge of a sheet of writing paper, or the leaf of a copybook, and a longitudinal series of letters or other characters is produced on each side, the characters being, for instance, the capital letters and small letters. The line of characters on one side is the reverse of, or inverted relatively to the line of characters on the other side, so that the device may be reversed to bring either line of characters to the front, with the characters properly positioned. Each character is depressed in the strip so that the child may follow the lines of the letters with a pencil, and'lines are produced on the strip between the characters, the lines being spaced according to the standard spacing of the ruling on writ ing paper and copybooks.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification. in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

It will be observed from Fig. 2, that the letters on one side are inverted relatively to those on the opposite side, so that in reversing the device to bring either series of letters to the front, the said letters will be properly positioned. Each char. acter 16 or 17 is depressed, as clearly seen in Fig. 4c, so that the child may follow with the pencil the indicated form of the letter.

Having practised following the letter with the pencil, and acquired the movements to produce the letter, the child may then practise forming the same letter freehand on i116 sheet 11 in line with the letter on the device 10. To avoid any sharp angles the ends of the sides 12, 12", are rounded, as indicated at 18 (Figs. 2 and 3).

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new. and desire to secure by Let- Patent:

1. A device for practising writing, comprising an elongated strip bent longitudinally on itself. presenting spaced sides adapted to receive between them the edge of a shew-t of writing paper. each side having on the outer urface thereof a longitudinal of depressed characters. the characters on one side running ,reversely to those on the opposite side. thus presenting an in veiled series on one side relatively to the series on the other side, and there being horizontal lines in connection with the 111- dividual characters in both series corresponding with horizontal rulings on ruled writing paper.

2. A device for practising writing, presenting spaced side members adapted to receive the edge of a sheet of paper therebetween, and longitudinal series of depressed characters on the outer faces of said sides, the characters of one series being inverted with respect to the characters of the other series.

3. A device for practising writing, presenting spaced side members adapted to receive the edge of .a sheet of paper therebetween, and longitudinal series of characters on the outer faces of said sides, the characters of one series being inverted With respect to the characters of the other series.

4. A device of the character described, comprising an elongated strip presenting longitudinal series of characters on opposite sides thereof, the characters of'one series being inverted with respect to the characters of the other series. 1

5. A device of the character described, comprising a strip having a longitudinal series of depressed characters thereon, and horizontal lines dividing the characters of the series and extending to the free edge of x the strip, to aline with the rulings on ruled.
