Be it known that I, FRITZ E. Amrrron, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Pen Arms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to graphic recording instruments and particularly to supporting arms for the pens or other marking devices therefor.

()ne object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable stylus arm for gages or instruments of the aforesaid character that shall comprise a relatively short member fixed in position by the instrument mechanism and a readily displaceable marking member arranged to be operatively connected to the fixed member.

Another object is to provide an adjustable connection between the aforesaid members.

Other objects will be set forth hereinafter.

Referring to the drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation of a recording gage equipped with a pen arm constructed in accordance with my invention, the casing being broken away to disclose the entire pen arm. Fig. 2 is a front elevation on a larger scale, of the pen arm alone. The pen arm is shown in side elevation in Fig. 3, the record cardand the attachment hub being shown in section.

While I have shown my improved pen arm applied to a recording pressure gage its use is not restricted to any class or kind of recording device.

The gage shown comprises a pressure responsive actuator 10, a casing 12, having a glass front 13 hinged at 14 to the body of the casing, a removable dial card 15 and a pen arm 16. One member 20 of the pen arm is pivoted at 25 and is connected with the actuator 10 so that it is moved thereby about its pivot. To this member is pivoted near its free end a disk 21 having a knurled edge 22 and an outwardly projecting eccentric pin 23. The pen arm also comprises a relatively long elastic arm 24 which is loosely pivoted at 25. A reservoir pen 26 is removably secured to the arm 24 near its outer end in the usual manner and is arranged to rest upon the record disk 15. A longitudinal slot 28 is provided in the arm 24 intermediate its ends and is adapted to receive the pin 23 which fits into it. The disk 21 does not turn freely on its pivot but may be easily adjusted to any desired position without danger of subsequently slipping out of place. The pin 23 obviously maintains a predetermined relation betweenthe arm 24 and the member 20 and therefore the movement of the pen is dependent upon the position given the member 20 by the actuator 10. Nevertheless the relation between the arm 24 and the member 20 may be adjusted with great refinement by turning the disk 22 by reason of the fact that the pin 23 is eccentric.

One of the principal advantages of my pen arm, which may of course carry a penoil or stylus or any other suitable marking devlce, resides in the fact that the arm 24 may be sprung outwardly beyond the pin 23 and swung on its pivot to one side of the casing without disturbing the position or adjustment of the member 20 or the pin 23; lVhen it is thus moved to one side the record disk 15 may be very easily removed and replaced by a fresh record disk. This process has hitherto been a very delicate one and has frequently been the cause of injuring the pen arm or putting it out of adjustment. No such conditions obtain when my improved arm is employed.

Structural modifications may of course be effected within the spirit and scope of my invention and I intend that only such limitations be imposed as are indicated by the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A pen or stylus for graphic recording instruments comprising a pivoted actuated member, a pivoted resilient arm, and a detachable connection between said member and arm, the said arm being adapted to be flexed to separate said connection. whereby the said arm may be independently swung on its pivot.

2. A pen or stylus for graphic recording instruments comprising a pivoted actuated member, a pivoted resilient arm, a detachable connection between said member and arm, the said arm being adapted to be flexed to separate said connection, and means for transversely adjusting the arm relative to the member.

3. A pen or stylus for graphic recording instruments comprising a pivoted actuated member. an ad usting disk rotatably secured in said member and having an eccentric pin projection, a resilient arm coaxially pivoted with saidmember and having a longitudinal slot through which said eccentric pin is arranged to extend.

1-. A pen or stylus for graphic recording instruments comprising a relatively short or stylus arm to said actuated member at an intermediate point whereby the arm may be detached and swung on its pivot without disturbing the actuated member.

5. In combination with'a graphic record-, mg instrument having an actuator and a removable record plate, a pen or stylus device comprising a member movable in re sponse to the actuator, a resilient arm pivotally supported near one of its ends and detachably connected with said member at an intermediate point, and a pen or stylus afiixed to said arm whereby the pen or stylus arm may be detached and swung on its pivot to permit the ready removal of the record plate without disturbing the actuated member.

6. In combination with a graphic recording instrument having an actuator and a removable record plate, a pen or stylus device comprising a resilient arm pivotally connected to the actuator near one end and detachably and adjustably connected thereto at an intermediate point, and a pen or stylus aflixed to said arm whereby the pen or stylus arm may be flexed to detach it from said member and swung on its pivot to permit the ready removal of the record plate without disturbing the actuated member.
