AUTOMOBILE-BUFFER.
To all whom it may concern e it known that I, LEWIS P. I'IALLADAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of La Salle' and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automobile-Buffers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buffers for automobiles and has for its object to provide a new'and improved device of this description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of one buffer support; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a cross section along line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross section along line 4-4: of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the end of the frame, with a section of a part of the bufier arm.

A is a spring secured to the part B from which projects the extension C within the frame, whichat this point consists of the side piece D, the upper piece D and the lower piece D These parts are held-together by the rivet D having the projecting heads 13*, D
The buffer support consists of the tubular part E with the enlarged extension E having the perforated wings E E formed on the downwardly projecting flanges E E On the forward end of the extension E and at one side is a downwardly and inwardly projecting reinforced portion E provided with a set screw E adapted to bear against the under side of the frame portion D F is a yokepreferably shaped solas to go around the rivet head D and secured by means of the bolts 13 to the wings E E The extension E is provided with two bearing surfaces G, G which rest upon the frame part D The bearing surface I) terminates in an end or stop which is adapted to bear against the rivet head D".
J is the transverse channel-shaped buffer bar secured at each end by means of a bolt J which passes through the adjustment slot J at the bottom of the channel. There is an extension J on the end of the socket J 4 into which the end E of the bufier support is inserted in the usual manner. I do not wish to be limited to the precise form, arrangement and proportion. of the several parts, as they may be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: I have shown my device as ap plied to the ordinary form of automobile frame end. If the curvature of the frame differs very radically from a given standard type, it may be necessary to have one or more varying forms of'the device, but assuming that it is to be used on a frame of substantially the curvature shown, then the bufler support will be shaped as indicated. To insert or place the support in position, it is inclined to one side until the part E is inserted between the upper and lower parts D and D of the frame, whereupon if the gether by means of the bolts F F Thus the buffer support incloses the upper portion of the frame,'is rigidly clamped thereto and has a firm bearing against the rivet head thereof. At the same time the parts are all held in'pro-per relation by means of the yoke and bolts. ..Since the support has but two bearings on the upper surface of the upper part of the frame, it will accommodate itself to a wide variety of frame forms. It lies wholly above the end of the frame and can be used when. as is frequently thecase, the lower part of the frame has an extended'apron projecting inwardly to protect the radiator above.
I claim:
1. A support for an auto bufi'er comprising a body resting upon the upper part of the frame near the spring end provided with means to engage the lower surface of such upper part of the frame at a distance from the spring end to hold the body to the frame, additionalmeans to secure the body to the frame near the spring end and downwardly depending sides to clasp the edges of the upper part of the frame.
