Be it known that I, HARVEY L. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi Leavenworth. in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented 1 new and Improved Carousel, of which the following is a full, clean-and exact de- My invention relates generally to carou- 'els and more particularly is directed to stain new and useful improvements in ich structures wherein the rapid and efucient assembling of the parts is provided, thereby providing a construction which is easily taken apart for transportation, the arrangement, however, being such that the parts when assembled are held together effectively and safely.
The principal object ofiny invention is to provide new and improved means in the assemblage of parts used in carousels, merry-go-rounds, and hobby-horses of the in which an up and down movement is .pai ted to the figures, in addition to the einentaround the circumference of a circle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description thereof proceeds, all of which is particularly pointed out and included in the appended claims.

is provided with a suitable collar 7 which engages against the lower face of 0. lug 8 carried on the under side of figure 1,the support extending through the figure which isprovided with a suitable opening, the support being also provided with a suitable step 9 whereby access to the top of the figure 1 is provided. This step is shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3 and comprises a vertically extending portion 10 having the step proper 9 extending laterally from one end thereof, the upper end of the portion 10 being provided with an offset arm 11 having a hook 12 at the outer end thereof. Adjacent the lower end of the portion 10 is another arm 13, preferably shorter than the arm 1].. and provided with a hook 14 adjacent its outer end. The support 2 is provided with openings 15 at diametrically opposite points, the openings registering with each other, the arm 11 on the side of the portion 10 of the step being adapted to be entered into these openings with the hook l2 engaging the outside of the support whereby the parts are secured; at, a point suitably spaced below one of the openings 16 i'sjanother. openin into'whichlthe' armlsb'n' the'portion iii of rare, sap tar -arms; seated; it" being substantially equal to the width of the arms 11 and 13 at the hooked ends so that the itselr arms may be entered therein, the final position of the parts beine; obtained by giving a slight downward ind vement tothe step in order to bring the hooirs l2 and '13 into the position shown in Fig. '2. in order to prevent turning of the step 9 relatively to the support 2, the portion 10 of the step is preferably provided with curved offsets 17 ads ted for e ca 'ement with the outside of the support asshown particularly in Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to Figs. 5 and 6, it will be noted that the upper end of the support 2 isprovided with a hoolr 18 of any desired construction, the hook being adapted to pivotailly support a bearing in which the crank arm 3 is carried so that, as the crank arm turns, the support may move up and down with ample freedom. The bearing" comprises two portions 19, 20, through which the crank arm 3 extends, the two portions being suitably secured together by means of bolts and nuts 2,1, the upper portion 20 of the bearing being provided with arms 22, 23, having suitable openings therein through which a pin 24 extends. .dhe bearing with the crank shaft therein is positioned within the hook 18, the hook ing through which the before-mentioned pin 24 extends, the pin being retained in. these openings in any suitable manner, as by spreading the ends thereof. The lower end of the hook l3 be secured tothe vertical support 2 in any suitable manner consistent with safety and rapid separation, the pre: ferred means being; a bolt and nut or screw 25.
v Since the support 2. is to oscillate or travel upand down as the carousel is rotated, it is necessary that some structure be provided for engagement with the lower end of the support in order to insure the proper relative position of the parts and to this end I make use of the fork shown particularly in Figs. 1 and This forkcomprises the sides 26, the rear ends of which are divergent and terminate in the parallel ends 27, the

which a key 45 is pivotally supported between these arms. Referring particularly to Fig. 7 it will be noted that the length of this key is substantially greater than the diameter of the vertical support 2, the pin 44 extending therethrough at a substantially intermediate point; the upper edge portion of the key is curved, as shown in this figure, the coupling being positioned within the vertical support with the key extending trans versely thereof and bearing against the lower. side walls of openings 46', 47, contained in the support and at diametrically opposite points thereof. It is to be noted that the length of one opening 47 is substantially greater than the length of the other opening 46, the purpose of which provides for easy separation of the parts by an upward movement of the coupling, the end of the length moving upwardly into the dotteL line position of Fig. 7 untilthe end of the key normally seated'within the opening/l6 is withdrawn therefrom by engagement with the side walls of the saidopening 46, the key being then contained in the interior of the support and in position for convenient was drawalv The vertical support 2 being suspended pivotally from the crank arm 3, relative movement of these parts is permitted when t key-containedfwithin the slot of greater the device-is in operation and since the lower end of this support 2 is also in pivotal engagement with the floor or frame of'the' structure, the oscillation or'up and down movement of the figure l, which is mounted on the support 2, is freely pelgnitted, move;

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentzv 1. The combination of a hollow suprort having openings. therein, with a coup ing extending within the support, one end of the coupling being adapted to be pivotally connected to a suitable fork, the other end oi the coupling being provided with a pivotally -mounted key the ends of which are engaged in thesaid openings of the support. 2. ,lhe combination of a hollow support with a coupling ositioned therein, the said support adjacent the upper end of the coupling being provided with openings at diametrically opposite points, together with a key extending transversely of the support and contained 111 the said openings, the key being in pivotak engagement with the end of the coupling. 7 I

The combination of a support having openings therein, the said openings being oppositely-disposed and registering, an; other opening in one side of the support spitably spaced from the said first opening, a step having a number of laterally exten ing arms, the outer end of each arm being hooked, one of the arms being longer than the other, and being entered into the said registering openings, the second arm enter ing the said second opening, the hooked ends of the arms engaging the sides of the support, whereby the step is held in position.
