To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that 1, JAMES M. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Morris, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Diggers; and I do' hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to post hole digers. g The object of the invention resides in the provision of a post hole digger which may be conveniently and efliciently operated and which embodies an improved means for removing the earth when same has become packed between the spade elements of the digger.

A further object of the invention resides I in the provision of a post hole digger which is simple in construction and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively small cost.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a post hole digger constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the digger; Fig. 3, a bottom view of the digger, and Fig. 4:, a detail perspective view of one of the stripping elements of r the digger.

Referring to the drawings the improved digger is shown as comprising a handle 10 which has secured thereto at one end oppositely disposed spade elements 11 and 12, said elements being arcuate in cross'section and disposed in opposition to each other. 14 and 15 mounted on the handle 10. Slidably mounted in the eye members 1 1 and 15 and the openings 13 are rods 16 and 17 respectively. The upper ends of these rods terminate respectively in laterally directed portions 18 while the lower ends thereof have secured thereto respectively arcuate plates 19 bearing against the inner faces of the spade elements 11 and 12 and conforming to the contour of said faces. Mounted in each rod16 and 17 and disposed between the eye members through which said rods slide is a cross pin 20. Encircling the rod 16 between the eye members 14s is a spring 21 the lower end of which bears against the lower eye member 14 and the upper end thereof against the cross pin 20. Likewise the rod 17 is encircled by a spring 22 one end of which bears against the lower eye member 15 while the upper end thereof bears against the cross pin 20. These springs 21 and 22 serve to normally hold the plates 19 at the top of the spade elements 11 and 12. y

In the operation of the digger the spade elements are driven into the ground through the medium of blows against the upper end of the handle. After the digger is removed from the ground the earth retained between the spade elements can be conveniently discharged by placing either the foot or the hand against respective portions 18 and then moving respective rods 16 and 17 longitudinally against the influence of the springs 21 and 22. This movement of the rods 16 and 17 will cause the plates to cut the material from the spade elements and render the discharge of such material easy.
