Description

T. C. MURPHY. BRASBE GLBANER. APPLICATION FILED TUNE 1, 1914.
1,121,570. Patented Dec. 15,1914.
TIMOTHY C. MURPHY, 0F DUBUQUE, IOW'A.
nnasnnfonnannn. A
To all whom t may concern.' y
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY C. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovenients in Eraser-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed for use in cleann ing erasers and brushes with special reference to cleaning vkerasers of the chalk dust that collects when the erasers are used in cleaning blackboards in schools `and the object is to provide an inexpensive device whereby a large number of these erasers may be cleaned at the saine time and `in an exceedingly short space of time.
A further object is to dispose ofthe chalk dust and other dirt after removal `from the erasers.
To the end that my invention may be `fully understood I will set out in the fol# lowing specilication and illustrate inthe drawings forming a part hereof, kthe manner of construction and Inode of operation whereby l accomplish the vend sought.
Figure 1 is a plan View of my device with the cover, and trays removed. Fig. 2 is a rear end View, with parts cut away and the rear end removed. Fig. 3 is a front view. Fig. 4 is a perspectivey view of the v tray or jig on Vwhich the erase-rs are placed naled a shaft 18. To this shaft are secured y v erasers 28 to be cleaned. The base of the` to be cleaned and showing the hangers.
-F ig.- 5' is a perspective -view of the upper tray or cover over the erasers.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in eachof the drawings.y
The device consists in a rectangular box having the sides 2 and 4, with the bottom 8 and removable top 10 and is set upon legs 12 and 14.
Tn the end 15 and forward end 16 is jourblocks 20 and 22 which blocks are ably of rectangular shape. y
Secured to the sides 4 of the box are spring plates 24 which rest upon the blocks 2() and 22. On these plates 24, over the prefer- 4blocks 2O and 22 is set a tray 25, shown in Fig. 4. Upon this tray are placed the tray consists of a mesh formed of wiresl 80 crossing each other at substantially rightangles leaving rectangular spaces 32.
At theends of the tray the mesh is bent upward at substantially right angles, to

prevent the erasers from being shaken off from the tray. To both ends of the tray arefixed standards 35; to these standards are pivoted hooks 36 which hooks are adapted to. engage' staples 88 in blocks 40 attached to the sideof the box to allow the tray to be operated vertically and not be tipped to one side. i y
For the purpose of preventing the erasers 28 from tipping upon their sides or turning over when they are jigged, there 'is provided a cover or tray 42 which is prefer-` ably constructed of a wire mesh similar to theL tray 25. Along the inside of the box are cleats or brackets 44, whichv are set slightly above the thickness of the erasers 28 and upon these cleats is placed the tray 42.`-`
For the purpose of disposing ofthe chalk siderableweight and a trifle wider than the wheel 45 in which frame the wheel 45 rotates. This frame is rigidly bolted together bythe bolts 52 and loosely attached to the sides 2 and 4. In this frame is pivoted friction rollers or spools 55 that are adapted to frictionally engage the drive wheel 45. To each one of the shafts of the spools 55 is secured a fan 55.
,The manner of operating my device is substantially as follows. The cleaner is set with its rear end in the ventilator of the school room. The tray is placed in the box with its base resting on the plates 24 and the hooks 36 brought into engagement with the staples 38 and the erasers are placed upon the tray 25 with their handles up. Then the tray 42 is placed over the erasers and rests on the cleats 44 and thek cover is placed upon thetop ofthe boX. The operator grasps the handle 48 and rotates the wheel 45 and since the blocks 22 are rigidly fastened upon the shaft 18 they will rapidly rotate and as they are rotated each corner of the blocks will engage the spring plates 24 and, as the tray 25 rests upon the plates 24, `it will be rapidly raised and lowered at each revolution of the shaft 18. This will jar the dust and chalk from the erasers and the heavier particles will drop between the meshesof the tray 25. If the erasers are vrapidly igged they Will `also strike the tray 4t2 and further jar the diist and dirt from the erasei's. At the same time that the shaft lSis rotated the Wheel Will also Vbe rotated-and, as the spools 55 frictionally engage the Wheel 45 and asthe fans 56 are rigidly fastened vupon the shafts'of .the spools 55 they will be rapidly rotated, fanyning all of the dust out at the baci; end of the bei; and the dust and dirt Will be carried up the ventilator and disposed of.
' lt will be seen that the erasers 28 Will be v cleaned very rapidly and vvith but a feiv n a rotations of vthe Wheel i5 as there Willy be four jigs at each revolution of the Wheel. It will also be seen that the rotation of the lfans will be exceedingly rapid from-the fact of the 'difference in the-proportion of the cirf cumference of the spools to the circumference of; the Wheel; 4 l
Where there is no ventilator in the room in which this is to be operated, then the frame is'removed ivitli-the'fans 56 and the front and rear enc s of the box are closed and the operator rotates the shaft 18 by the crank i6 and the erasers are jigged up and down in the same manner as before, and the chalk diist will settle at the bottomof 'the box, or the cleaner may be set oiit ofdoors and the dust carried away bythe Wind.
itisv evident that other means may be em-` ployed for jiggiiig the erasers and for jig- :ging them vertically 'and still beivithin'the spirit of my, invention and l do not desire to be limited toy my specific construction.
Havingnoiv described my invention what l claim is 1. lnl a device of the character described,
a box, a tray in the box on which the erasers are sustained While being cleaned, means Within the box for giving the erasers and they 3. ln a device of the character described," a box, a shaft jonrnaled in the box, lblocks Genies of this patent may be obtained. for
