To al lwlz om it may mm:
. Beit known that I, WILLIAM A. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mountain Home, inthe county of-El more and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Hay- Sweeps, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention is an improvement in that class of so-called hay sweeps in which a pusher or hay-discharger is mounted slidably thereon and adapted for ejecting a load of hay from the sweep upon the arrival of the latter at a stack.
The. details of construction, arrangement, and operation of parts are as hereinafter de'- scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which givesa perspective view of my improved sweep.
In the following description, lower-case letters are .used to indicate the frame of the sweep, and numerals to indicate the slidable pusher, or-hay-discharger, and its attachments.
The skeleton body or main frame of the sweep is rectangular and oblong form,
and constructed of upper and lower pairs of parallel boards a, a, and' transverse boards 7), 6', these parts being securely nailed together. Thus constructed, the frame combines a and lightness. To the under side of the lower longitudinal bars a are attached long teeth 0 which project forward of the frame as shown. I to some of these teeth and to the main frame Diagonal braces d are-attached proper, as shown. The said frame is supported upon running wheels 6, which also constitute fulcra for the frame on wh ch it may be tilted to adjust the endsof the teeth c nearer to, or farther from, the ground, as
required to cause them to take up the hay Such tilting is efiected by means of a connecting rod f in the most effective manner;
and hand lever g, the latter being pivoted to the supplemental rear frame andpro- Q vided with a toothed segment and pawl for locking'it in any required position.
Specification of Letters Patent.
high degree of rigidity Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application filed March 1, 1913. Serial No.751,57;6.
The supplemental frame comprises two long bars h which project rearwardly at a slight angle to each other, their front ends beinghinged to the main frame and their rear ends supported upon'pivoted wheels 2'.
Transverse bars j and diagonal braces y" connect the lengthwise bars h thus assisting in forminga'rigid frame. A drivers seat is attached to the rear portion of the supplemental frame.
r The hay-pusher ordischarger is formed of boards 1 connected by transverse boards 2 and a carrying frame composed of two thin but wide bars 3, which are arranged The a of the main frame. In practical use of the sweep, horses or other draft animals are attached to it in a well known manner, and.
propel the sweep over the field, it being understood that the driver has first operated the lever a by pulling it backward so as to draw the pusher 1 back-against the front edge of the mainframe, thus leaving the front portions of the teeth 0 entirely exposed. When a load has been taken up by the teeth Qthe sweep is. propelled to the stack, and then the horses are backed so as to draw theapparatus backward while the I driver at the same'time pushes forward on the lever 4 so as to discharge the load from w the teeth 0.
I claim The improved hay-sweep comprising a main, wheeled, and toothed frame provided in its middle portion with transverse, parallel guidebars which serve also as means for connecting the front and rear portions of such frame, the pusher and the slidable frame attached to it and supporting it slidably upon the main frame, and composed of parallel bars connected at their rear ends and Working in contact with, and guided by, the aforesaid transverse bars of the main fran1e,'arid pivoted hand levers, and rods connecting the latter with the main frame] and] pusher frame, for ope ratihg the rake frame and pusher, as descrlbed. o
