CURTAIN-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed November 22, 1913. Serial No. 802,437.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, T'TORACE E'RVIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ogontz, county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Iniprovenients in Curtain-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the means for supporting the door curtains of an automobile of the touring car type having a top with movable side curtains.
In a prior patent granted to me on the tenth day of December, 1912, No, 1,Od7,017f, I have shown a post for supportin' the door curtains made removable froin t e socket.
at the free end of the door. I
One object of my invention is to arrange the post so that it is not removable, but caii be turned and locked in position at the inside of the door.
Another object of the invention is to utilize this post, when located on the side of a door, as a handle therefor. r
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of suflicient of an automobile of the touring type to illustrate my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line u iz, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a door showing the post in the upright position; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the door, showing the post located on the inside t'hercof and in position to be used as a handle; Fig. 5 is a view looking from the inside of the door, showing the post in the upright position and locked to the door; Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view. showing the post in a position similar to Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a plan View, showing the post shifted to the inside of the door and ready to be turneddown to the position shown in Fig. 4; l igs'. Sarrd Q are' perspective views illustrating modifications of the invention in which the bearing is loeated on top of the door; Fighld is a view illustrating another modification illustrating the'post in an upright position; Fig. 1l is a rear view of the door SllOWlIlf' the modification illustrated in Fig. 10, with the post at the back of the door; Fig. 12 is a, sectional view on the line bb. Fig. l; and Fig. 13 is a view illustrating the post made in two parts lunged together.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the body of an automobile, of any suitable type, and 2 is the door. This door, in the present instance, is hinged at the forward end at 3, 3, but it will be understood that the door ma be hinged at the rear without departing from the essential features of theinvent-i on. The door may be of any suitabletype a'ccording to thestyle of the automobi 4. is the touring car top, which can be Arranged to fold in the ordinary manner, or a fixed open top may be substituted, as desired. The top, in the present instance, is supported by the ordinary bows 5.
6 is the rear curtain.
7 is the forward curtain and 8 is the curta'in directly above the door 2, This door curtain 8 moves out with the door when the door is opened. In the present instance. the door curtain 8 underlaps tlie forward curtain 7 and overlaps the rear curtain G. The curtain has a flexible metallic band at its upper end, as at 9, and a socket 10 for the reception of the end ofa vertical post 11 and is secured to the depending portion of the top 4 at 12. The ciirtain has a socket 13 at its free end for the reception of the post 11, but this construction may be modified without departing froin the spirit of the invention. The curtain is secured to the door byiastening's 14, as shown, so that when the door is opened, as above noted, the curtain is carried with it, giving suiiicient head room for a person to enter or leave the car.
My invention relates to the'means' for mounting the post on the door and the devices above described may be modified without departing from the essential features of the invention. I g t The post 11 is bent at the lower end, is shown at 15, and has a screw threaded portion 16 which enters a rotating hub 17 in a Hearing 18 located at the inner side of the door near "he ipper edge and is arran ed tb tra el in a siot 19 in the bearing. he ends of the slot form stops to limit the iiiovement oi? the post in either direction. In the bottom ofthe bearing 18 is, a socket 20 to receive the end 91 of the screw threaded portion 16 of the post so that when the post is raised and turned into position to properly support the curtain, the end 21 of the post enters the socket 20 and locksthe post in its Vertical position to the hearing,
'but as scenes the post is turned to the rear of the door, then the end 21 is withdrawn from the socket and the post is free to be turned down to the position illustrated in Fig. 4, and the end of the post engages a clamp 22, of any suitable type, which holds the post rigidly in its lower position.
The post, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. *2, projects from the inner side of the door a sufiicient distance to act as a handle for 7, that the portion 23 of the post is fiat and the slot 19 is slightly tapered so that when the post is lowered it is prevented from turning in the bearing.
In some instances, the post may be'made in two sections hinged together, as in Fig. 13, where itis of such a length that it cannot be located back of the door, but in the majority of cases the post will be of such length that it can rest in a diagonal position, as shown in Fig. 4;.
In Figs. 8 and 9, I have shown the bearings 18* located at the top of the door 2 instead of at the side and the post 11 has a stem mounted in a swivel hub having a vertical axis, which can be turned freely in the bearing.
In Figs. 10 and 11, I have illustrated another form of post ll having a stem extend ing through a hub 17 swiveled in the hearing plate 18". The stem forms a bolt which is actuated by a spring and engages a socket 20 in the bearing. When the post is in the elevated position, as shown in Fig. 10,- a cam on the end of the hub 1'? engages the post 11 and lifts it when the post is turned so that it can be turned down to the position illustrated in Fig. 11, the projection of the bearing acting as a stop for the post.
It will be seen by the above construction that I am enabled to make a post for sup porting the door curtains of an automobile which need not be removed from the door when the curtains are dispensed with and which can be turned and located at the back' of the door, forming a handle therefor, although, in some instances, the'post may fit tightly against the door, being hidden by any suitable flap secured thereto, if desired.
