B has button-holes arranged f' at intervals through which the buttons b and f extend. Thus the curtain is stretched between the upper edge of the door B and the cross bar F'.l The forward edge of the curtain B is turned around the front upright D and the edge of the curtain is fastened to the body thereot` by a series Ofspring fastenings or buttons Z22, Fig.- 8.
. lI preferably extend the Curtain B to' the y rear of the door and attach it tothe buttons 'a on the main frame and also to butv'tons' c at the lower edge of the top, as
shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, so that twhen the door is open the curtain willy simply bend on aline with the door as in Fig. 6, and thereV will bev no opening at this point. Thus it -will be seen that when the door is fopen" the section of thec'urtai'n above the `door opens with the door and consequently the full height of the doorway between. the floor of the vcar and the top is exposed so f that va person 'can readilyv enter or leave the vcan A When 'it is desired Ito dispense with the curtains, the door curtains B can be -readily unfastened and the uprights D-D and cross bar F can be readily detached and 40 @curtains vstowed .away'fina` small compass withthe In some instances, instead of making the .crossbar'detachable from thel uprights, vas Iin Fig. 11, the cross bar vmay be hinged to the uprights, as in Fig. 13, but the ob]ection to this construction'is that the parts cannot Abe. packed in so small acom ass as where fcurtains of 'the,top,-I`provide a section C5,
' yFig; lwhich has a casing c2 for the recepf are' m'adevlseparate, asin ig. 12. y order to make a-neat fit between the buter-edge `of the doot-.curtain and the xed A`tion ofi-anv upright D-, shaped at the bot- .tomv .thesame as the upright D and adapted to a socket a1 inv the bodyA, Fig. 10,. Thel opposlte edge vof the section C3 is perfo; rated for the reception of buttons which are secured by the curtains Cz or one of the bows which support the top and the rear edge of this curtain is so proportioned that it overlaps the front edge when the door` is closed.
In order to close the space between the upper edge of the door curtain and the top C, I make the lapel of the topso that 1t will extend over the edge of the door curtain when the door is closed, and all that is necessary is to run the finger along the front edge of the door curtain and along the top edge when the two projecting edges will be forced out 'and will lie along the outer edge of the door curtain, preventing rain entering the body of the automobile.
`While I have shown, in Fig. 3, the top C greater in Width than the body A of the automobile, in some types of automobiles, or other vehicles, the top may be on a vertical line with the body, and in this construction the uprights will be straight instead of bowed. The amount of bow will de end entirely upon the width and type otop used and the design of the body of the automobile.
In some instances, the doorA curtain B may be permanently attached to the cross bar F and the cross bar used as a pole upon which to roll the curtain when itis stored away, but I prefer to use a construction where the curtain s entirely detachable from the other parts.
,The combination ofa detachable curtain for vehicles having a hinged door and a -movable top; ai door havlng sockets at lts upper edge near each end; an upright detachably and rigidly mounted 1n each 'socket-g a continuous cross bar detachably mounted on the ends of the uprights and extending from one upright to the other; a curtain detachably secured to the door and to the cross bar, the curtain, when in positicn,`holding the cross bar and the uprights rigidly to-the door;
Intestimony whereof, I have signed' myv nameto this specification,y in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. HORACE ERVIEN.
