To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. TAYL R, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewood-Park, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to centrifugal devices.
I will describe one form of centrifugal device embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing in vertical section one form of centrifugal device embodying my invention, the upper portion of head 11 being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view of the centrifugal device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view showing in vertical section the upper portion of head 11 shown in g' ilar reference characters refer to similar parts in the several views.
One feature of my invention is the provision of means for preventing rotation of the centrifugal device in one direction, which means is operative while the device is at rest but inoperative while the device is rotating.
Referring to the drawings, the centrifugal device comprises a tubular spindle 4 mounted in a suitable manner (not shown) so that it is free to rotate. This spindle is rotated by suitable means not shown. Extending from the upper end of spindle 4 are two yokes 10 in each of which is pivoted a twoarmed lever 9. The downwardly extending arm of each lever carries a weight 8, which weights are thrown outwardly by so-called centrifugal force when spindle 4 is rotated, thereby depressing the other arms of levers 9. The latter arms project into holes 11 in a head 11 which is fixed to a stem 28 which latter reciprocates vertically in the upper end of spindle 4. It will be seen, therefore, that when the balls 8 swing outwardly, the head 11 is drawn down, and that the head rotates with the spindle 4. The head 11 is connected with a link 26 through the medium of a ball-bearing 27, so that this link is reciprocated vertically by the head but does not rotate therewith. in Fig. 3, the inner race of the ball-bearing is attached to the link26 by-nuts 26", and the outer race is clamped between the top of head 11 and an inner flange on a nut 39 which screws on a threaded portion of the head. The ends of this bar are upturned and are provided with pivot studs 19* by means of which the bar may be pivotally mounted to swing in trunnion screws 19. of slight lateral movement of'the link 26 with relation to head 11, and the stem 28 is capable of slight lateral movement in spindle 4, hence a pin and slot connection between parts 13 and 26 is unnecessary.
So far as the apparatus thus far described is concerned, the centrifugal device is capa ble of being rotated in either direction. In order o prevent rotation in one direction, I provide a pawl and ratchet device comprisin g ratchet teeth 55 on the circumference of nut 39, and a pawl 56 fixed to a .plate 57 riveted to bar 12. The ratchet device is so arranged that when the bar 12 is in the position corresponding tothe position of rest of balls 8, the pawl 56 engages with the teeth 55 to prevent rotation of head 11, and consequently of spindle 4, in one direction, but that when the bar 12 is swung by the outward movement of the ballsdue to rotation in the other direction the pawl 56 is moved out of the path of teeth 55. Hence, while the centrifugal device is rotating, the pawl 56 does not touch the teeth 55, so that the ratchet device then offers no resistance to the rotation and is noiseless.
