My invention is a. locking device for the blade, so constructed and arranged as to operate in e direction perpendicular to the aforesaid plane. of movement, and thus to prevent both the separation of the blade from its contact and the spreading apart of the blade and contact supports. Furthermore, the magnetic lines oiforce at the lock are parallel to the direction of motion of the bolt, and hence any current, eddy or otherwise, that it might carry cannot produce e force tending to withdraw seid bolt from locked position` l My invention further 'consists in the construction of the insulating supportspfor the blade and cooperating contact, and of the lever blade Vand operating device for the bolt, whereby said blade may be moved into and out of circuit-closing position, without necessitating dangerous proiiimit)7 of theA operator to the switch.

' in block B it meets the beveled end of bolt E, and so forces said bolt rearwardly, com-` pressing spring K until the opening L comes opposite the bolt end. The bolt is then free to be thrown forward by the compressed spring thus entering opening L and locking blade A in closed position.
In order to manipulate the blade A, I provide any suitable handle or rod `of wood 0r other insulating material, having at its end a ferrn'le having two metal projections N, O. In closing the blade, the short projection N is inserted in opening M, and the blade is then operated. To raise the blade, the longer projection Ois inserted in said opening until the edge ofthe blade enters a groove P on the upper side of said projection, as shown in Fig. 3. The end of projection O then meets'the projection F and pushes the same rearwardly until the end of the bolt clears the opening L in blade A, after which said blade may be raised by the rod or handle. An operating rod, such as described, is necessary, because the very high voltage which the switch controls renders it impossible for the operator to use his hands,
or even nearly to approach the switch. In practice, I malte said rod some seven or eight feet in length.
Referring to the modified form of my deyjce shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive: The bolt E is slotted to receive one end or' a bell crank lever Q which is pivoted in lugs R on the block B` The easing H is suitably lengthened to accommodate the longer bolt, and has a slot S inits wall to permit the play of bell crank lever QJ'- The short projection N enters the opening M in blade A and is used, as before,'in, moving said blade to closed and locked position, as shown 'in Fig. ll, dotted lines. Vhen it is desired to raise blade A, the projection C) is inserted into opening M, so that,I as shown in Fig. 6,
Yand cooperating with a circuit terminal on the other support, a bolt slidable in said last-named support in a direction perpendicular to the plane of movement of said blade and entering an opening in said blade, a spring for holding said bolt in engage- -ment with said blade, and a lateral projection on said bolt :Ithe said blade lhaving a second opening registering with said lateral projection when said blade is engaged by said bolt. v
2. A switch, comprising two supports, a lever blade pivoted to one of said supports and cooperating with a circuit terminal on the other support, a bolt slidable in said lastnamed support in a direction perpendicular to the plane of movement of said blade and entering an opening in said blade, a spring for holding said bol-t in .engagement with said blade, a lateral projection on said bolt, the said blade having a second opening registering with said lateral projection when said blade is engaged by said bolt, and a separate bar constructed to enter said second opening to meet said projection and retract said bolt and having a `recess engaging with the edge of said opening when said bolt is retracted.
