TELEPHONE APPARATUS.
Medus Specification of Letters l'atent.
Patented Dec. 8, 19114.
Application filed August 27, 1813. Serial No. 786,857.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that we, OMER M. GLUNT and EMIL C. G. MUELLER, citizens of the.
United States, residing, respectively, at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, and at ElIZiLbGth, 1n the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful mitters, and more particularly to that type of transmitter which is adapted to be held in the hand of the user. While transmitters of this type may be used wherever a portable transmitter is desirable, the transmitter hereinafter disclosed is particularly adapted for use in telephone systems mstalled in vehicles to enable the "occupant of the vehicle to communicate with the driver thereof. In systems of this character, when installed for instance in an automobile of the limousine type, a. receiver located at or near the chaufieurs seat and a hand transmitter located in the tonneau are connected. in series with a battery. As the system is in use only a small part of the time, the battery is normally disconnected from the circuit and a switch conveniently located in the handle of the transmitter 18 provided in order to connect the battery to all till
the circuit while the system is in use.
The invention will be more fully understood by referring to the accompanymg drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a lon 'tudinal sectional view of the transmitter o the invention taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing various details in the position whlch they occupy before assembling.
To a circular plate 1, which forms the mouth-piece of the transmitter, a casing 2 is attached, said plate and casing forming a cylindrical box within which the usual diaphragm 3, the carbon button 4 and bridge 5 are mounted. The bridge 5 is attached to the plate 1 by means of a plurality of screws 6 so that by removing the plate 1 access may be. had for adjusting purposes to the carbon button 4:, which is carried thereby.
Secured to the casing 2 by means of rivets 7 is a metal tube 8, which registers with an aperture 9 in the casing. A second metal tube 10 is provided with two integral fingers 11, which are provided with apertures 12 near their upper extremities. The fingers 11 are inserted within the tube 8, and a pin 13 is passed through suitable apertures in the tube 8 and the apertures 12 to secure the tubes 8 and 10 in fixed relation. A tubular handle 14, which maybe of wood, hard rubber or other suitable insulating material, surrounds the tube 10 in such a manner that a reduced portion 16 of the handle fits in between the tubes 8 and 10 with the lower end of the tube 8 resting on a shoulder 15. the lower end of the tube 10 and serves to secure the handle portion 14 to such tube.
The tubes 8 and 10 provide a conduit for the reception of. a pair of conductors 18 which are connected to suitable terminals carried by the bridge 5, and a knot 19 in the conductors 18 serves in connection with the nut 17 to prevent the conductors from being pulled out of the handle. Also carried by the bridge 5 are two angular contact s rings 20 and 21 which are normally out 0 contact and are adapted to be placed in contact, to close the circuit of the transmitter, by means of pivoted switch lever 22. The switch lever 22, which is formed of sheet metal, carries at its upper end a contact piece 23 of insulating material and at its lower end a finger piece 26 also of insulating material, and at the central portion thereof are a pair of integral ears 24, each of which is provided with an aperture 25. When in assembled position theswitch lever 22 is located within the tube 8, and is pivoted therein by means of the pin 13 which passes through the apertures 25. When in this position the contact springs 21 resses against the contact piece 23, can rie by the upper end of the lever 22, and causes the finger piece 26 to project through an aperture 2 in the tube 8.
When the transmitter is in use the speaker grasps the handle 14 and depresses the finger piece 26 with the thumb, thus closing the contacts 20 and 21 and placing battery on the system. Owing to the fact that the speech transmitting elements and the contact springs are all mounted on the plate and the handle and switch lever are se- An annular nut 17 is threaded into- We claim: I
1. A hand telephone transmitter comprising a casing havin a tubular handle secured thereto, a brldge piece mounted in said casing, a transmitter element and cir cuit controlling elements carried by said bridge pieces, and a switch operating member mounted in said handle and coiiperating with said circuit controlling elements;
2. A hand telephone transmitter comprising a cylindrical casing having a tubular "handle secured thereto, a bridge piece mounted transversely of said casing, a
transmitter element and a pair of contact springs carried by said'bridge piece, and a contact closing member mounted in said tubular handle with one end engaging said contact springs and the other end extend- 'ing through an opening in said handle.
niaopae 3. A hand telephone transmitter comprising a casing having a transmitter element and a switch mounted therein, a tubular extension on said casing, a tubular member having one end fitted in said tubular extension, an insulating handle surrounding said tubular member, a switch-operating 'lever in said tubular member, and a pivot pin for said lever serving also to secure-said tubular member to said tubular extension.
45. A hand telephone device comprising a cylindrical casing having a telephonic element and a switch therein, a tubular extension on said casing, a tubular member having a pair of upwardly extending fingers adapted to fit within said tubular extension, a switch-operating lever in said tubular member, and a pivotpin for said lever passed through apertures 1n said tubfi lar extension and said fingers to secure said tubular member to said tubular extension.
In witness whereof, we hereunto subscribe our names this th day of August A. 31).,
