CUVE-PLATE FOR BAIVISl AND CEILINGS.
i Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led July 21, 1913. Serial 1go. 780,150.
To all whom 'it may concern: i. A
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. ANDER- I soN, a citizen of the United States, residing Y fined in the claim.
at Minneapolis, in the county of -Hennepin and State of Minnesota, havevinvented cerf tain new and useful Improvements in Cove- Plates for Beams and Ceilings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art same. A y
My invention relatesv to improvements .in cove plates for use in thev construction of beams and ceilings and, to this end, it consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and de- In the vaccompanying drawings, Awhich illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout thel several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one corner of a room having secured to the ceiling and walls thereof a beam and coving conlstructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. is a transverse vertical section, taken through' the coving; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, taken through the beam; and Fig. 4 is a detail view on an enlarged scale, showing the construction of one 'of the `socalled cove plates.
Th'e numerals 1 and 2 indicate, respectively, the walls and ceiling of a room.
Referring first to the construction of the improved cove plates 3, the numeral 4 indicates -two pieces of buckram of different weave pasted together and sized. Buckram is carried in stock in this form. To the exposed face of the buckram of finer weave is pasted asheet of heavy coarse paper 5, such asred rosin paper. 'In securing the buckram 4 to the red'rosin paper 5, the paste is preferably applied to the buckram and the meshes thereof completely filled therewith. One face of the red rosin paper 5 is then moisteiled with water and pressed onto the pasted side of the buckram 4, preferably by rolling. The parts thus assembled 4jReferring now to the'd'" vto which it appertains to make and use'ithed patenten Dee. s, 1914.`
are then allowed to' dry. After drying, a l
thin finishing paper 6 is pasted on the-exposed face of thered rosin paper 5. The red rosin paper 5 is preferably moist with water and the paste is applied to the,red
rosin paper or the finish paper. As the finish paper 6 dries, it shrinks, thereby warping or curving the entire cove plate 3 to substantially its correct fornLh, l.
truction of the coving, the upper longitudlnrledge of "one 'of the coving plates'3 is secured'to the oeil-A ing 2 by small nails and the edge thereof is covered by narrow molding -7 'nailed to the ceiling 2. The lower longitudinall edge of the covingis nailed tothe walls l and a furring strip 8 is preferably interposed betw'n the coving plate 3 andthe wall 1. The
er of the coving plate 3 and furring strip 8 is covered by molding 9 which is nailedzto'the walls'l.'
Inv constructing ceiling beams, the sides` thereofare vformed bylspacing two of the cove plates 3 laterally apart and securing their upper longitudinal edges to the ceiling 2 by nails. These longitudinal edges are then covered with a molding 10 similar to Y the molding 7. .A board 1I forming the bottom of the beam is secured -to the lower longitudinal edges of the cove plates 3 by*` g ing 9.
The finish paper 6 may be grained to represent different woods or itmay 'be plain paper painted, stained, or enameled, as desired, depending on the finish of the rest of the room. The moldings 7, 9, 10 and 12 and also the bottom board 11 may beconstrueted from expensive woods or from cheap woods covered with afinish paper 13 of the same design as that applied to the cove plates 3. In some instances, it might be desirable to use a picture molding in place of the molding 9 of the coving.
Beamsl and coving constructed in accord' ance with my invention can be put in place very quickly and are of comparatively small cost to manufacture.
What I claim is: In testimony whereof I affix my signture A cove plate made up of two pieces of in presence of two Witnesses. buokram of different weaves pasted to-v A `WILLI M ANDERSON.
