KNIFE-POST.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Emsrm H. Soon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Vayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to knife posts and is designed more particularly for use in connection with ensilage cutters or devices of a similar character in which the cutting blade or blades are mounted on a movable support and are arranged to cooperate with a shearing block or other cooperating cutting device.
One object of the invention is to provide means for mounting each blade upon the support in a manner which will permit the blade to be adjusted at either or both ends, toward or away from the support; and further, to accomplish this adjustment in such a manner that, where the support is a rotary one, the balance of the support will not be interfered" with.
A further object is to provide means for connecting the blade to the support which will permit the blade to be removed without destroying the adjustment: and a further object is to so construct and arrange the parts as to provide a strong, durable construction, and a construction in which there will be no tendency to shear the bolts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rotary support carrying two blades connected thereto by posts embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the post, the support and the blade; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the post.
In these drawings 1 have illustrated the invention as applied to a rotary cutter such as is commonly employed in a well known type of ens'ilage cutting machinery and comprises a rotary support or disk 1 on which are mounted a plurality of blades 2. In the present instance I have shown two of these blades but the number may be varied as circumstances'may dictate. These blades are flat and are arranged parallel or substantially parallel with the face of the supporting disk. In order to secure the best cutting action the blades must be supported in Specification of Letters Patent.

the proper relation with the edge of the cooperating shearing block and must also be so positioned as to produce a shearing cut of the proper angle. Inasmuch as the shearmg block is arranged on one side of the axis of the supporting disk the character of the shearil'ig cut is determined by the position of the blade relatively to the radius of the rotary support. It is desirable that this position should be determined before the machine leaves the factory and that the blades should be secured permanently in their adjusted positions. It is not possible, however, to maintain the blades always in exactly proper cutting relation to the shearing block because of wear and other attendant circumstances. It is, therefore, very desirable that means should he provided whereby the blades can be adjusted relatively to the face of the support and thus brought into closer or more distant relation with the shearing block. It is also desirable that this adjustment should be obtained without altering the position of the blades with reference to the radii of the rotary support, this being desirable for two reasons. First. such a change of position would alter the shearing action of the blades and, second, would alter to a greater or lesser extent the balanced condition of the rotary device, including the support, disks and other connected parts.
In order to secure the desired adjustments I have connected each end of each blade 2 to the disk 1 by means of a post 3, each post having a longitudinal opening to receive a bolt 4 which extends throughthe same and also through the blade and the support, thus servingto clamp the blade to the support in spaced relation thereto. Preferably, the outer end of the post is provided with a shoulder 5 against which the rear edge of the blade rests and which serves to take the strain and prevent any tendency of the blade to shear the bolt. In order to adjust the blade toward and away from the support 1 an adjusting device is interposed between the inner end of the post and the support. In the present instance that portion of the post adjacent to the support has an inclined surface 6 which cooperates with a wedge shaped plate 7 which is interposed between the surface 6 and the support 1. The wedge-shaped plate 7, or wedge, has a longitudinal slot 8 through which the bolt 4 passes and which permits the wedge to move relatively to the bolt and post 3. As here shown the post has a longitudinal boss 9 which extends through the slot 8 in the wedge 7 and into a recess 10 formed in the support 1. This boss and recess serve to prevent any shearing strains upon the bolt. Suitable devices are provided for adjusting the wedge relatively to the post and maintaining the same in its adjusted position. In the present instance an adjusting bolt 11 is secured to the post and extends through a slot 12 in a lug 13 carried by the wedge 7 This bolt is provided on both sides of the lug 13 with adjusting nuts 14, whereby the bolt must be adjusted relatively to the wedge and locked in its adjusted position. This adjustment of the bolt serves to move the wedge relatively to the post and consequently to move the post and the blade carried thereby toward or away from the face of the support 1. The bolt 11 being secured to the post 3 in such a manner as to prevent the outward movement of the post relatively to the bolt it will be apparent that the post and the wedge are retained in their adjusted positions relatively one to the other regardless of whether or not the bolt 4 is in position or is tightened down. This permits the removal of the blade from the support, to enable it to be ground or for other purposes, without destroying the adjustment because, while the post and wedge will be removed with the blade, they will be maintained in their adjusted position relatively one to the other and when again connected to the support will position the blade exactly as before its removal. The bolts 11 may be secured to the post 3 in any suitable manner but to enable the device to be readily assembled and the bolts to be removed when desired I have shown the post as provided in its rear side with a T- shaped slot 15 adapted to receive the head of said bolt. When the bolt is in the narrow portion of the slot it will rest against the lower edge thereof and the outward movement of the post relatively to the bolt will be prevented.
The operationv of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that the use of posts, such as shown and described, will enable the blade to be adjusted toward and away from the face of the supporting member without altering its position with relation to the radius thereof; that it will permit either end of the blade to be adjusted relatively tothe other end thereof; that this adjustment will not materially affect the balance of the rotary devices; that the blade can be removed and again attached to the support without destroying the adjustment of the parts; and that the construction of the device is such as to relieve the connecting bolt of all shearing strains.
lVhile I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it will be understood that this has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for Ohvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination, with a support, a blade mounted on said support, and a connecting post, of a member interposed be tween said post and said support, and means positively connecting said post with said member whereby said blade may be adjusted.
2. The combination, with a support, a blade mounted on said support, and a connecting post, of a member interposed between said post and said support, and means positively connecting said post with said member whereby said blade may be adjusted in substantially a right line toward and away from said support.
3. The combination, with a support, a blade mounted on said support, and a connecting post, of a member interposed be tween said post and said support, adjusting means positively connecting said post with said member, and a bolt extending through said blade, said post, said member and said support.
4. The combination, with a support, ablade mounted on said support, and a connecting post, of a member having an inclined surface interposed between said post and said support, and a bolt connecting said post with said member whereby said blade may be adjusted.
5. The combination, with a support, and a blade, of a post interposed between said blade and said support, means for connecting said blade and said post to said support, a member connected to said post and interposed between said post and said sup port and having an inclined surface, Whereby the adjustment of said member will adjust said post and said blade relatively to said support, and means for securing said member and said post against relative movement.
6. The combination, with a support, and
said member having an apertured part to receive said bolt, and means for locking said member in adjusted positions relatively to said bolt.
7. The combination, with a blade, and a support, of a post interposed between said blade and said support, a bolt extending through said blade, said post and said support, a wedge-shaped member connected to said post and interposed between said post and said support and having a slot to permit the passage of said bolt, and a second bolt for adjusting said wedge-shaped member relatively to said post and securing the same in adjusted positions relatively thereto, whereby said blade and said post may be removed without destroying the adjustment of the blade relative to the support.
8. The combination, with a support, and a blade, said support having a recess therein, of a post interposed between said blade and said support and having a boss, the end of which is adapted to enter the recess in said support, and an adjusting device interposed between said post and said support.
9. The combination, with a support having a recess, and a blade, of a post having one end adapted to engage said blade and provided with a shoulder against which the rear edge of said blade bears, said post also having a boss adapted to enter the recess in said support, and an adjusting device in: terposed between said blade and said support.
10. The combination, with a support, and a blade, of a post having one edge cut away to form a shoulder against which said blade bears, an adjusting device interposed between said post and said support, a bolt connecting said adjusting device with said post, and a second bolt extendingthrough said blade, said support, said device and said 0st. p 11. The combination, with a rotatable support, a blade carried thereby, connecting posts interposed between said rotatable support and said blade, one of said posts being near the periphery of said support and the other being near the center thereof, of adj usting members interposed between the support and the respective posts and movable transversely to the length of said blade, whereby said blade may be adjusted without interfering with the balance of said rotatable support.
