Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed August 12, 1912. Serial No. 714,681.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenton, in the county of Hardinand State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Heating and Baking Furnace, of which the following is a specification.
The improvement relates to a plan of increasing the heating surface in a furnace chamber, and provides a baking drum within said chamber whereby the fuel may accomplish both purposes of heating and baking by the products of combustion.
This plan consists of a plurality of fines arranged in horizontal and vertical connection, having receiving inlets and discharg ing outlets and positioned at the sides and transversely across the central portion of a furnace chamber; of a baking drum box-like in form having at one end an openingcommunicating through the end wall of the said chamber, provided with a door having regulating air inlets thereon, and a heat discharging outlet in the top portionthereof; of a grate in two sections having a right and left incline and each section being semislotted andpositioned below the horizontal flues atthe sides of the said chamber; of a cross-flue having communication with the discharge outlet ofthe said drum and with an air chamber formed by an outer casing surrounding the furnace wall at the sides, top and rear and being spaced therefrom.
My invention in its peculiar and specific nature, in combination and detail of construction and special arrangement of the parts, will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification and application, in which the figures show the plan of the arrangement and connection of the parts, and the letters of reference indicate the same parts throughout thedrawing and specification.
Figure 1 is a view of the front elevation in partial section for air heating. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view of the front elevation in partial section for water heating. Fig. 4 of the side is a longitudinal sectional view elevation for water heating.
In the detail descriptive plan of my furnace I employ a substantial wall of suitable material for the furnace chamber, preferably sheet metal and shaped in box-l1ke form, shown at A; at one end are openings in the wall, which provide means of access within, the said openings having suitable doors therefor. In the upper portion at B shown a door having a regulating air inlet thereon denoted by b, which door pro vides a closure to the means of access into a baking drum, and said inlet thereon means for draft therein; the doors for the infeed of fuel are designated by b and those for the ash chamber are shown at b".
The grate is in two sections designated at G and being semi-slotted at one side of each section denoted by c and the solid portion at a; the sections of the grate are positioned at a right and left incline; the semi-slotted portion being lowermost beneath flues arranged in horizontal and vertical connection with each other at the sides of the furnace chamber, whereby the fuel may be positioned in close proximity to the lines, that the heat from combustion will be greater thereat.
The discharge outlet for the products of combustion of the furnace chamber is shown at D, situated in the upper surface of the rear wall and adapted to connect with other outer fines not shown.
Letter 1*) designates a cross-flue situated at the central top portion of the furnace, and provides a central heat discharging outlet for the baking drum and the air chamber, which surrounds the furnace wall at the sides, rear and top surface; the discharging outlet of this cross-flue has communication with another conducting flue denoted by e, which may be of any length for conduction required.
The fine arrangement composed of the horizontal portion of the gratesections at each side within the furnace chamber are designated by F and the vertical flues con necting with the top of the said horizontal lines are denoted by G and the transverse horizontal flues, which unite with the upper portion of the vertical dues and are across the central portion of the furnace chamber are shown at H; these transverse flues having discharging outlets in the upper surface denoted by h, which outlets communicate with heat receiving inlets in the bottom of the baking drum when air heating is used and omitted where water heating is desired. This flue arrangement and connection is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing.
The receiving inlet fines of the said flue arrangement are designated at I; and the discharging outlets denoted by J, the said inlets and discharging outlets are adapted to connect with other conducting means and with registers and radiators.
The baking drum is designated by K. It is box-like in form having a discharging outlet at is in the top communicating with the lower portion of the cross-flue E and in the bottom heat receiving inlets having communication with heat discharging outlets in the upper portion of the transverse flues shown at 7t when air heating is used and omitted where water as a heating means is desired. This baking drum is situated in the upper portion of the furnace chamber between the vertical flues at each side and above the said transverse flues. Said drum has at one end an opening which provides means of access, having communication through the furnace wall to which the drum is detachably fitted by suitable means.
The outer casing which surrounds the furnace wall at the sides, rear and top is indicated by L and is spaced from the said wall forming an air chamber therebetween denoted at M, and the said casing has air receiving inlets designated by Z, situated at the'lower rear portion which communicate with the said air chamber; the said furnace wall and said casing are provided with corresponding apertures in their top portion shown at N, for the passage of the receiving inlets to the flue arrangement and the discharging outlets as illustrated by the drawings.
Suitable supports for the flue arrangement are shown at O, and those of the grate sections which are denoted at 0 and which may be rods or other suitable means therefor.
The movement of the heating medium and the products of combustion are indicated by arrows.
From the foregoing description of my furnace illustrated in the accompanying drawings the principles and merits will be comprehended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 1. In a heating and baking furnace of the nature described, the combination of a plurality of flues arranged and positioned in horizontal and vertical connection located within and at the sides of a furnace and joined with transverse horizontal flues centrally located in said furnace, said transverse flues having upwardly discharging outlets adapted to communicate with receiv ing inlets in the bottom of a baking drum which is supported above the said transverse fines and between the upper portion of the vertical ones of the said arrangement, said drum having at the top a discharging outlet communicating with a cross-flue above; and at one end an opening having communication through the end wall of furnace, said drum being detachably fitted thereto and provided with doors having regulating inlets thereon; the said arranged fiues and the said drum having communication with'each other through the said outlets of the transverse fines and receiving inlets in the bottom of drum, and with other receiving inlets and discharging outlets whereby the atmosphere of apartments may be circulated through the furnace for the purposes as set forth.
2. In a heating and baking furnace of the nature described, the combination of a baking drum and a plurality of fines arranged and positioned in horizontal and vertical connection within a furnace, said drum being' box-like in form and located and supported in the upper portion of furnace above transverse horizontal fines and between the upper portion of vertical ones at the sides of furnace, said drum having at the top a discharging outlet communicating with a cross-flue and at one end an opening having communication through the end wall of furnace said drum being detachably fitted thereto and provided with doors having regulating inlets thereon; said drum having communication with said inlets and discharging outlet and said flue arrangement having receiving inlets and discharging outlets whereby the circulating medium may be heated through the furnace for the purposes as set forth.

In a heating and baking furnace of the nature described, the combination of a-furnace, an inclined grate having the upper portion solid and the lower part having slotted apertures therein, said grate being in two sections and situated in the lower part of the furnace; of a plurality of lines arranged and positioned in horizontal andvertical connection within the furnace; of a baking drum located between theupper portion of the vertical flues at the sides of furnace and supported above the transverse horizontal fiues of the arrangement, said grate being positioned with the solid portion elevated and the slotted part lowermost beneath the horizontal flues located near the sides of the furnace walls whereby the combustion of the fuel may be positioned in close proximity with the said flue arrangement, that intense heat may be applied to the said flue surface as set forth.
4:. In a heating and baking furnace of the nature described, the combination of a furnace and an outer casing surrounding the wall of the furnace at the top, rear and sides and spaced therefrom forming an air chamber therebetween; of a plurality of fines arranged and positioned in vertical and horizontal connection with each other situated Within and at the sides and across the central portion of the furnace; of a baking drum located between the upper portions of the vertical flues and above the transverse ones, said'drum havin a discharging outlet in the top communlcating with a crossflue in the said air chamber, of receiving inlets in lower rear portion of said outer casing communicating with the said air chamber, the said outer casing, and said furnace wall havin in their top corresponding apertures w ereby the passage of receiving inlets and discharging outlets may circulate the heat conveying meansthrough the furnace for the purpose as set forth.

In a heating and baking furnace of the nature described, the combination of a furnace, of a cross-flue situated in the top of an air chamber, between the furnace wall and an outer casing; of a plurality of fiues arranged and connected in horizontal and vertical position with each other within the furnace; of a baking drum in the upper Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
