To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR BINGHAM and WILLIAM PRATT, subjects of the King of England, residing at Leicester, in the county of Leicester, England, have invented certain Improvements in Nail-Distributing Machines, of which the following description, inconnection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawing indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for distributing nails and more particularly to a machine of the type in which the nails are delivered from a raceway into a series of pockets in a receiver that is arranged for movement to present the said pockets successively to the raceway. In machines of this type it has been found. that there is some liability of a. bent or deformed nail passing down the raceway and becoming jammed in one of the pockets in the receiver,
thus interrupting the operation of the ma chine and sometimes causing breakage of the parts of the machine.
An object of the present invention is to provide a nail distributing machine which shall be free from the objections above mentioned.
With this and other objects in view the present invention contemplates the provision in a nail distributing machine in which nails are delivered to a movable receiver of automatic means for ejecting deformed nails failing to be properly delivered from the receiver. Preferably the ejecting means comprises a deflecting devicearrangedin proximity to the receiver in such position that a nail wedged within a pocket in the receiver will, in the movement of the latter, be engaged by the deflector and ejected from the machine. Preferably there is provided means cooperating with the ejector for causing the ejected nail to be thrown clear of the parts of the machine. provided means for returning displaced deformed nails .into positions in which they will be most effectively acted upon by the ejector.

In the drawings,-l+igure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of a nail distributing machine showing one embodiment of the present invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a rear view, partly in section, of that portion of the machine shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the nail receiver showing a nail about to be ejected; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing additional devices actin in combination with the receiver; and Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:.
In the drawings, 2 designates a raceway which may be supplied with nails by any suitable nail asserting mechanism. \Vorking across the lower end of the raceway is a rotary nail receiver t having a substan tially vertical circular face provided with radially arranged nail receiving pockets 6 into which the nails are successively received as the pockets are brought opposite to the end of the raceway in the rotation of the receiver. A stationary cover plate 8 is arranged to fit over the face of the receiver to prevent displacement of the nails in their movement toward the position in which they are delivered from the receiver.
Arranged at about 180 from the point at which the nails are received from the raceway is an opening in the cover plate through which the nails may fall as they are brought opposite so that the nails are delivered from the receiver in a reversed position to that which they occupied when delivered from the raceway. The nailsdelivered from the receiver fall into nail conduits in a nail carrier 10 arranged beneath the receiver.
The construction and arrangement of the parts above mentioned may be substantially the same as shown in the British patent to Gouldbourn at al., above mentioned, to which reference may be had for a more detailed description.
In the apparatus above described occasionally a bent or deformed nail passes down the raceway and is delivered to one of the nail pockets 6 in the receiver and bea comes jammed when the receiver is rotated. When the receiver has been rotated a suthcient distance to bring this pocket or recess opposite the delivery opening in the cover plate 8, the nail being ammed in its pocket is not delivered but is carried around untll the said pocket is again presented to the raceway for another nail. I Upon the receiver being moved to this position the wedged nail strikes the nails in the raceway, interrupting the operation of the machine and sometimes causing breakage of the parts of the machine. To overcome this disadvantage the present invention contemplates the provision in an apparatus of the above type of means for removing bent or deformed nails from the receiver before they are carried far enough in the rotation of the latter to stop or damage the machine. To this end the cover plate 8 has an opening formed therein in such position that the nail pockets 6, and consequently a nail fail ng to drop at the proper time in the rotation of the receiver because of being wedged 1n a pocket, will have to pass the said opening before again reaching the end of the raceway. Secured to the cover plate at 12 and projecting inwardly toward and in close proximity to the receiver is an ejector 14- which, in the rotation of the receiver, is adapted to engage the shank of a jammed nail and dislodge it from its pocket or recess. The ejector let is preferably provided with an inclined acting portion arranged to engage the shank of the nail and force it laterally from its pocket as the nail is carried by the ejector in the rotation of the receiver.
A door 16 pivoted on the cover plate 12 by a pin 18 is provided to enable access to be had to the lowermost nail pocket in the receiver. The door is secured in operative position by a catch 20 pivoted at 22 on the cover plate 12. Preferably there is secured to the cover plate 8 at the side of the discharge opening opposite to that on which the ejector is located a spring plate 2%, Fig. 4, which extends inwardly toward the receiver and is adapted to engage a wedged nail near its head. With this arrangement as the ejector engages the shank portion of the wedged nail the spring plate 24 engages the opposite side of the nail near its head, so that the nail is pressed between these two parts. In the further rotation of the receiver the wedged nail moves clear of the spring plate 24 and the sudden release of the nail from the pressure of said plate causes it to be thrown outwardly from the receiver.
In the operation of the machine there is some liability'of a partially deformed nail being delivered to the raceway. In such case, although the nail may be held sufficiently tight so that it will fail to be delivered at the proper time, it will not, however, be wedged sufliciently tight in its re cess to insure of its being carried beyond the delivery point without its falling partially out and projecting from its recess. To prevent a nail when it has assumed this position from coming into contact with the cover plate in the subsequent movement of the receiver and to replace it in correct position for the ejector to operate on, there is provided a cam plate 26, Fig. 4, which is arranged to engage the head of the nail and in the rotation of the receiver to force the nail back into its pocket or recess so that it will be properly positioned to insure that the ejector will subsequently remove it.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1- j 1. In a nail distributing apparatus the combination with a nail inverter comprising a member having a substantially vertical face provided with nail receiving grooves and arranged for movement between a position in which the grooves receive nails having their heads pointing in one direction and a position in which the grooves deliver the nails with their heads pointing in the opposite direction, of automatic means for ejecting nails which fail to be properly delivered from the grooves and a cover member for preventing lateral displacement of the nails within the grooves in their movement toward nail delivering position.
2. In a nail distributing apparatus the combination with a nail receiver having nail receiving pockets and arranged for movement between a position in which the pockets receive nails and a position in which the pockets deliver nails, of means for ejecting deformed nails failing to be delivered from the pockets at normal delivery position, arranged to be rendered operative by the movement of the receiver.
3. In a nail distributing apparatus the combination with a nail receiver provided with nail receiving pockets and arranged for movement between a position in which the pockets receive nails and a position in which the pockets deliver nails, of means for ejecting deformed nails failing to be delivered from the pockets at normal delivery position, comprising a. deflector arranged to lie in the path of a deformed nail and to displace the latter from its pocket.

A nail distributing apparatus having in combination a rotary nail receiverhaving a substantially vertical face provided with radial nail receiving grooves and arranged for rotary movement to successively bring the grooves in position to receive nails and thereafter in position to deliver nails, a cover member for preventing displacement of the nails within the grooves in their movement toward nail delivering position,
and means for ejecting deformed nails failing to be delivered from the grooves comprising a deflecting member located beyond said nail delivering position arrangedto'je gage a deformed nail and to displace it vertical face provided with nail receiving grooves and arranged to successively deliver nails from the grooves at a predetermined point in its path of movement, of means for ejecting deformed nails failing to be delivered from the grooves at said point con-v structed to throw an ejected nail clear 01' the receiver.
7. In a nail distributing apparatus the combination of a nail receiver having nail receiving pockets and arranged for movement between a position in which the pockets receive nails and a position in which the pockets deliver nails, of means for ejecting deformed nails failing to be properly deliver-ed from the pockets and means for returning displaced deformed nails into the pockets to be acted upon by the ejector.
8. In a nail distributing apparatus the combination with nail receiving means arranged for movement to deliver nails in a predetermined position, of means located in the line of movement of the receiving means beyond said position for ejectin deformed nails failing to be delivered from said receiving means.
9. In a nail distributing apparatus, the combination with means for conveying nails from one oint to another, of means for ejecting deformed nails and projecting them away from the apparatus.
10. In a nail distributing apparatus, the combination of a nail receiver arranged to deliver nails normally at a predetermined point and means located beyond the de livery point for ejecting from said receiver nails which have become jammed therein and carried past said delivery point.
11. In a nail distributing apparatus, the combination of a nail recelver arranged to deliver nails at a predetermined point and an ejector located beyond said point and constructed for engagement with those nails which become jammed in the receiver, to dislodge them.
12. In a nail distributing apparatus, the combination, with means for conveying nails from one point to another, of means for ejecting deformed nails comprisin an. ejector havlng an inclined face arrange for engagement with a nail in the conveyer and a spring plate adjacent to said ejector for throwing the ejected nail clear of the apparatus.
