ROAD-BED CONSTRUCTION.
`Specttlcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 11nd.
Application alsa January 3.1, ,1314. Serial No. .815@87..
To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED GoousnL, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Limeridge, in the county of Sauk and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and luseful Improvements in Road-Bed Construction, of which the followingr is a specification.
The invention relates to roadbed construction, and has for its primary object to provide a composite roadbed wherein the same is prevented from spreading and can be repaired in a quick and convenient manner when the surface thereof becomes worn from the constant use thereof or by reason of heavy traffic thereover.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a roadbed which avoids expensive grading and will shed water, and also be rendered practically dustless.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a roadbed wherein the construction thereof assures durability and will be devoid of ruts or unevenness in the surface thereof resultant from the constant use or when subjected to heavy traliic.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a roadbed which possesses simplicity, capable of being readily and easily repaired, thatis, at the portion subjected to the greatest wear, requires minimum grading, and also one which is inexpensive in installation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
VIn the drawing z-Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a roadbed constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view therethrough.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.. A
Referring to the drawing in detail, the roadbed comprises spaced longitudinaly disposed traction blocks 5, preferably ma e from' concrete, having beveled sides 6 and central channels 7 opening through the upper faces thereof, in which are received bricks or stone blocks8, although the said blocks may be made from any material and are removably held within the channels 7 so that they can be renewed when subjected to wear. Arranged between the blocks 5 is a foundation layer 9, while superimposed thereon is a center' filling 10, preferably ofearth or stone, although it may be of any desired material and is formed with a convexed `upper surface 11, as shown. At the outer sides of the blocks 5 are side banks 12, which are made from earth or stone, and have laterally sloping upper surfaces 13 so that water will drain therefrom to opposite sides of the center of the roadbed. Passed through the foundation layer 9, transversely thereof at predetermined points, is a reinforcing bar 14, preferably made from steel, and has its ends extended into the blocks 5, these ends being formed with abutments 15 so that the said blocks will be permanently anchored and the bars 14 will prevent the spreading of the roadbed. The blocks 5 are held in place within the channel by means of plastic substance such as asphalt to prevent motion and consequent wear.
It is to be understood of course that changes, variations and modifications may be made such as come properly within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
W hat is claimed is:
1. A roadbed comprising a pair of spaced longitudinally disposed traction blocks having channels openin through their upper faces, removable bloc s held within the said channels, a foundation layer arranged between the first-named blocks, and a center filling superimposed upon the said layer and having a convexed upper face, reinforcing mediums extendin through the foundation layer and embe ded in the first-named blocks at their ends.
2. A roadbed comprising a pair of spaced' longitudinally disposed traction blocks having channels opening through their upper faces, removable blocks held within the said channels, a foundation layer arranged between the first-named blocks, a. center filling superimposed upon the said layer argl havg Lmeee ing a convexed upper face., reinforcing lim testimony whereof ll ax my signature mediums extending through the founetiom im presence of two Witnesses.
