These valves are operated, in the present instance, by a lever 39 fulcrumed upon the standard 40 and connected respectively on opposite sides of the tulcrum with the valve stems Llland l2 'for the respective valve members 35 and 37. ltuwill be noted that the treeend of the lever 39 is preferably provided with an opening Li3 for the reception of a lug vor pin 44; carried by the tank 7, the said opening having a clearance about the pin 44 so that lthe latter has a slight` movement before it engages the lever 39. The function of this construction is to cause the impact of the moving pin 44 to insure a prompt opening oit the steam valve 37 and a simultaneously quick closing of the valve 35. v
45 designates the delivery pipe from the apparatus the same having connectionwith the Tpipe` iitting 28 and having a check valve ,46 therein to prevent return of the water under greater pressure than existing in the apparatus. A check valve #i6 is also provided in the exhaust line 31 to prevent back flow to the pipe, as will be readily seen.
ln the operation oi the apparatus the compartment 10 of the tank 7 normally contains suihcient water to maintain the tank in horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1, in which position the live steam valve 37 is held closed while the valve 35 is open since the lever 39 is in its uppermost position. rllhe Water enters the apparatus by way of the pipe 26 and may liow 'freely by gravity through the flexible conduits 29 and chamberfl); This flow of water may bejaugmented` by the exhaust steam discharging through the pipes 31, 33 and 30 into the return ias willbe understood, though a portion ot this exhaust steam may also traverse the conduit 36, channel 5 and enter the coils 11 and 15 in the respective chambers 9 and 10 where it serves to heat the waterk collecting within the tank. As the water level moves upward within the chamber 10 it en.- ters the depending pipe 23 rising thereinuntil the level reaches the return bend 22 when a siphoning action takes place, starting a flow ot the waterl within the compartment 10 by way of the compartment 9, which iiow continues until the level of the water within the compartf ment 10 falls below the inlet 'of pipe 23. The transfer of the water from onecompartment to the other shifts the center of gravity of the tank 7 from one' side of thevpivotal support of the tank to the other, and consequently the tank tilts to a new position, resting at an incline upon the tilting action operates the lever 39 to close the balanced valve 35 and open the balanced channel' 6 into thev butter 25. This" pipes 19 and 20 into the valve 37 so that live steam from the pipe 38' the .two sets of coils l1y and 15 and discharges into the compartment 9. The admission of this pressure into the compartment 9` 'forces the water con# tained therein back through the pipe 20 into the chamber 10 fromwhich itis forced under the same pressure through the channel 6 and conduit 29 to the delivery pipe 4l5. rIhe check 46 in this latter pipe is arranged for Jfree flow in the direction of the arrow shown. The delivery ycontinues until the quantity of water in the compartment 10 overbalanc-es the opposite side ot the tank 7 thus causing it to return to normal horizontal position, during which movement ot the lever 39 closes the live steam valve 37 and again opens the valve 35.

It will also be noted that by my present construction I have dispensed with all float mechanisms and all means which require delicate adjustment or manipulation, and consequently my improved apparatus is easily installed, easily kept in order and very positive in its operation.
While I have shown my present apparatus as more particularly arranged for handling and delivering feed water to a boiler, Ido not wish to be restricted `to this particular use, as obviously the delivery pipe may be connected to any type of mechanism in which water, or preheated water, is to `be used, and furthermore the delivery pipe may be of any desired length and have its outlet remote or at a distance from the tank struc ture.
It will now be apparent that I have devised afnovel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that I do not restrict myself to the details, as the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
In this application, no claim is made to the special arrangements of the flexible con duits or pipes 29 and 36, in so far as they are arranged parallel to the axis of oscilla- `tion of the tank and are 1n communication with the chambers ofthe tank and respectively with the water and steam pipes, as this specific arrangement forms subject matter of my application Ser. No. 847,887, filed June 9.9, 1914.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let` ters Patent is l. In a device of the character stated, the
combination of a tank divided into two compartments and suitably mounted to tilt from one position to another, a water supply and delivery pipe, a flexible conduit forming `a communication between one of said tank compartments and said water pipe, a steam supply pipe, a `liexible conduit forming a communication between the remaining tank Copies of this patent may `be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner ofratents,`
compartment and said steam pipe, means operable by the movement of said tank for controlling the admission of steam to said latter compartment, and means havingcommunication with said flexible steam conduit for conveying the steam through both `of i said compartments and discharging it adjacent the top of the same compartment.
2. In a device of the character stated, the
combination of a tank divided into two com-` partments and suitably mounted to tilt from one position to another, a coil located in one .of said chambers and provided with an open end adjacent the top of said chamber, a coil located in the other chamber and having its ends terminatingin the first chamber, one of said ends being connected `to the` first mentioned coil and the other end inl free trolling said steam conduit and meansoperated by the movement of said tank for opening said valve to admit steam to said coils, and means for siphoning the contents of one chamber into the other chamber.
3. In a device of the character stated, the
combination of a tank divided into two compartments, a `trunnion member supporting said tank for tilting movement and having a plurality of channels therethrough, a water supply and delivery pipe, a flexible conduit forming a communication between one of said trunnion channels and said water pipe, a steam supply pipe, a flexible conduit formmg a communication between the other trun` mon channel and said steam pipe, said trunnion lchannels communicating" respectively with said tank compartments, an `exhaust,
steam pipe having communication with said steam channel, a by-pass leading from said exhaust steam pipe to said water supply pipe, a valve in said by-pass pipe,1a second valve in said steam supply pipe, means for causing the Water to pass from one compart-` ment into the other compartment, and means operable by the movement of said tank for alternately opening and closing said valves.
