I o TE s'rAt iEs PATENT OFFICE-i GEORGE PARMENTIER, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
BOOT AND SHOE MACHINE. i
5 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PARMENTIER,
a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 44: N eubaugasse, Vienna, VII 1n the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have lnvented cer- 3 tain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Machines, of which the following is a specification. a j
The presentinvention relates to boot and shoe machines especially to devices for lifting boots and shoes from their lasts.
The invention consists in the fact that the last-pin is formed as a spreading device,
which spreads in" such a manner that lifting Q of the last is prevented with increasing certainty inproportion as forces act upon it pin so that the last is not only securedto the pin owing to the spreading of the latter but also supported on the pin. 1 3 An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing as apin accordance with the invention the last is 1 sists broadly of a last pin 1 formed of a pair 1 pincers. 1 In the construction hereillustrated seized from below on the last hole and held uponthe last-pin, whereupon, by means of movable bars adapted to be driven in between thelast and the boot, the boot is lifted from the fixed last. a j
Figure 1 shows a constructional form of such a machine in front elevation partly in section. Fig. 2-is a side elevation partly iii-section. 1*ign3isaplan. Figi lis a section onthe line TAA in Fig. Qyand Fig. 5
is adetail 'viewh 1 1 y j r In accordance with the embodiment of the inventionhere illustrated the apparatus conof leverspivoted together after the analogy of 'pincers, in two or more parts, uponwhich the last 2 is placed and held thereon by the pressure produced by the opening of the the opening and closing of the pincers is effected by means of a pedal 3. .The arrangement may be such'that the pincer levers 4, 5 are connected one with the other by links and the hinge bolt 8 of the pincers is shift Specification of Letters Patent.
able by means of rods 9 connected with the pedal 3 so that by means of a depression of the hinge.boltproduced by means of the pedal the pincers 1 are closed while when the Patented Nov. 24:, 1914.

hinge bolt is shifted upward they are opened. The pincer levers 4 and 5 are thus actuated by a toggle mechanism.
whereby said bars canbe driven in between the last andthe upper 1n the manner of a shoe horn. In the construction illustrated the bars can be adjusted to lasts of different widths, and for that purpose they are jointed scissors-like; and provided preferably with a spring 13 always tendingto draw them .to-
gether. The arms 10 and 11 j are provided with projecting members 15 slidably engag ing with adjustable guide rails 16. The in terval between the guide rails 16 determines the width to whichthe horns open. By adjusting theguide rails 16 from or toward each other the width to which the horns open will be increased or reduced. The adjustment of the guide rails may be effected for example by mounting said rails on pivoted arms 26 and providinga screw spindle 19 rotatable by means of a hand wheel 18 or the like. The spindle 'is shown provided with left and right hand threads engagingnuts 17 cover plate is secured on theupright in such a manner as to be'readily detachable so that all the members are accessible merely by lifting the'plate. r a
\Vhenj the apparatus isin'use in the first place the last pin 1 formed as pincers is 1 closed by means ofthe pedal. 3 so that the last can be placed upon it. The pedal is preferably drawnback into its normal position by the action of a spring 3; upon the release of the pedal the pincers are opened by spring action and, owing to the pressure produced thereby the last is firmly clamped on its pin. Then by means ofthe pedal 12 the horns 10, 11 are lifted and driven between the last and the boot whereby the latter is lifted from the last and can be removed by hand. Preferably the arrangement is such that the horns 10,11 extend beyond the base of the last pin in their lowered position so that whenthe boot is placed upon the last-pin the horns penetrate between the last and the boot. In order to avoid. binding or tilting of the last and the bending strain upon its pin which would occur upon the lifting movement of the horns, a bearing (Figs. 1 and 5) is provided on the base of the last-pin, the last resting upon this hearing by means of its plane face. The return of the pedal 12 to its initial position canbe produced au tomaticallyby the action of springs or the likewhichengage on therods Qlconnected with the pedaland become, operative when-the pedal is released.
When owing to the stretching of the leather the last isdrawn upwardin unilasting, owing to the upward movement of the hinge bolt, the spreading device becomes operative so that the greater the tendency of the last to rise the more efl 'ective is the spreading action.
It will be understood that the form of device shown in the drawings and described in detail is illustrative of the nvention and that changes may be made within the scope of the claims as occasion may demand.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the-sameis tobe performed, I declarethat what I claim-is y .1. A last holder for boot and shoe ma chines, comprising a last pin formed as a spreading device constructed and adapted for engaging the walls of the last holetoi fix the last in position and oppose the lifting of the same, and actuating mechanismfor said pin effective upon a lifting movement on the part of the last to produce an increased spreading action ofthe last pin.
, 2. A last holder for boot and shoe .ma-
chines, comprising a last pin embodyingleand adapted for spreading into engagement with the walls of the last hole to fix the last in position and oppose the lifting of the same, mechanism for actuating the pin for effecting such engagements and means operable upon such lifting movement on the part of the last to produce an increasing spreading action of the last pin, a shoe horn, and means for actuating the same for forcing it past the last in the-direction to increase the spreading action of the pin when the horn engages a shoe upon the last. a i
5. A last holder for boot and shoev machines, comprising a bearing for the last and a pin engaging from below the walls of the last hole, and constructed andadapted for increasing its holding action upon the last upon a movement of the lastaway from said bearing, and a pair of movable shoe horns adapted to be raised between the last and the upper, the. lifting movement of the horns being produced by. means of a pedal, this motion of the horns aiding to increase the spreadingaction of the pin.
