I citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county -of Cook'. and State of Illinois, have invented ,certain-new and useful Improvements in Furnaces,'of,which the' following isa specification.
My invention relates 1n general to furnaces, and more particularly to means for consuming the smoke incident tof' burningsoft coal.
Various mechanisms have heretofore been devised for consuming the smokegenerated when a furnace is fired with soft coal. Many of such'mechanisms have comprised means for feeding steam to the furnace fire-boxes,
while others have consisted of means for gradually diminishing volume of air to be supplied through the fire-doors', the volatile matter of'the coal, which would .otherwise be carried 4up the stack as black smoke, will.

By adjusting the nee` die valve /Z5 and observing the stack after the supply of fuel, it may be readily deten 'mined whether a sufficient quantity of `air is being supplied after ,each charge of fresh fuel to consume the smoke, and, if not, the needle valve d5 may bp further adjusted until the desired result is secured.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that l have invented a simple and economical means for `consuming, smoke, which will not only avoid the disagreeable effects due to the smoke ordinarily generated in burning soft coal, but will contribute to The openingv of each door moves the uilen/ie the economical running of the furnace by insuring the consumption of the particles of the fuel which would otherwise be carried up the stack in the form of smoke. It Will be further observed thatr my invention is applicable to furnaces already in use and may be adjusted according to the conditions of each particular furnace, and according to the character of the fuelburned, so as to ac complish equally efficient results regardless of the special conditions existing at each furnace to which it is applied.

The combination With a furnace, of a lire-door through which fuel is supplied, and meansv for automatically permitting a predetermined gradually reduced volume of air to be supplied through said door after the supply of fuel to the lire, said means comprising adoor check operatively connected directly with said door and having adjustable means to regulate the closing of the door according to the character of the fuel,A draft, and requirements of the furnace.
3. The combination with a furnace, of a fire-door' through which fuel is supplied, and means operatively connected directly to said door for holding the same open during the supply of fuel therethrough, and for automatically closing said door at a predetermined speed to permit .a gradually decreasing volume of air to be supplied to the fuel.
