TOaZZ/whomzt may concern: Be it known that I, YGE kG. MULDER, citizen of the United States, residing at Orange City, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in instruments for artificially or mechanically impregnating female animals for breeding purposes, and the particular improvements which I have invented kin this connection, have for their primary object, the production of a device that can be attached to semen extractors of well-known form, and
that will take the place of capsule filling and inserting operations which follow the extractor, as the art is now commonly practised.
Owing to exposure to the air and dust which occurs when the semen is inserted in capsules, a large percentage of the spermatozoa is rendered infertile, and this serious objection to the use of capsules is avoided by my present invention which does not expose the semen to the chilling` and other deleterious influence of the atmosphere which prevails where such operations are usually carried on.
Other objects of general utility are conserved by my invention, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates.
I have illustrated a preferred adaptation of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which':-

Referring to the details of the drawing, the reference numeral 3, represents a metal tube, the outer end of which has a curved seat a formed therein, and the opposite end of which is threaded as at 3b, t0 adapt it to be screwed into the end of the extractor cylinder l0, the latter having the usual plunger l0, and being of well known construction and operation, so that it is not shown in detail.

The operation or use of an vinstrument constructed as above described, is as follows Assuming that the cylinder 10 has been supplied with semen in' the usual 1inannei, and its extractor tube or extension, (not shown) removed, and the tube 3 screwed in place, the plunger l02L will be pushed inwardly to force a predetermined charge of semen into the glass sleeve 9, the ball-valve 5 being unseated sufficiently to allow the passage of the fluid into the interior of the sleeve. rllie operator then grasps the sleeve with his right hand and inserts and'holds it in the animals uterus, and withvhis left hand pushes the tube 4 (with the cap 7) forwardly intothe sleeve 9, thereby ejecting the semen from the latter into the )Y uterus, the incidental back-pressure upon the ball 5 holding it uponits seatandthereby preventing any` of the seinen from reentering the tube 3.
It will be understood that the entire instrument will be heated to blood temperature before the extracting operation takes place, and that the fluid within the tube 3 will be protected or retarded from losing its heat by the heat in the instrument, and by i the non-conducting properties of the packing 4b. l
As all the lmembers which make up vmy improved applicator are readily separable, sterilization is easily effected.
It will be obvious that the transparent property of the sleeve 49 will permit the opiin erator to observe the quantity and condition of the charge of seinen, and that by drawing out the sleeve relative to the cap, in the iii-st instance, the capacity of the receiving chamber will be increased.
lt will also be understood that when a charge of seinen is forced into the sleeve, the operator will place his ioreinger loosely over the orifice 9a, so as to permit the air to escape Without loss of the impregnating iiuid which will enter the sleeve as the air escapes.
I claim as my invention l. In an instrument of the character described, in combination with a cylinder having a plunger therein, a tube adaptedto be detachably connected with the discharge end of the cylinder, a valve seated in the discharge end of said tube, a tube surrounding said iirst named tube7 a cap adjustably connected with said second tube and 'having a discharge opening therein, yielding means bearingupon said cap and valve, and a sleeve slidably fitting said cap and second tube,`said sleeve having a discharge opening at its outer end.
2. Inan instrument of the character described, in combination with a cylinder having a plunger therein, a tube adapted to be detachably 'connected with the discharge end of the cylinder, a valve seated in the outer end ci' the tube a second tube surrounding said first named tube and insulated therefrom, a cap adjustably connected With the outer end of the second tube and having a hole'- therein,` a spring bearing against said cap and valve, and a transparent sleeveslidably litt-ing said cap-and second tube.
