ImW/or ROSS F. MQKENNA, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24;, 1914.
Application filed September 5, 1914. Serial No. 860,335.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ross F. MGKENNA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in puzzles, the object of the invention being to provide a puzzle which represents a war game and contains a series of compartments with relatively narrow entrances to the compartments, and in which balls are provided to enter the several compartments, one ball being provided for each compartment, and colored to correspond with the color of the compartment.
A further object is to provide a puzzle of the character stated in which a circular series of separated compartments are provided differently colored and captioned to indicate the names of nations, and said puzzle adapted to be operated by tilting the same so as to compel balls to roll into the several compartments, the puzzle being completed when the proper ball is in each compartment.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a plan view illustrating my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 22 of Fig. l.
1 represents a circular box or inclosure having its bottom 2 pressed upwardly forming a circular series of partitions 3. These partitions 3 have their inner faces curved concentrically with the curvature of the outer wall 4 of the box or inclosure, but the ends of the partitions are spaced apart forming passageways 5 connecting the central circular field 6 with the circular series of compartments 7 formed by the said partitions.
The compartments 7 are given captions indicating various nations, and the compartments are given dilferent colors as shown clearly in Fig. 1. For each compartment 7, I provide a ball 8, the balls being just small enough to pass through the passages 5, and these balls 8 are colored to correspond with the colors of the compartments.
In playing the game or manipulating the puzzle, 1t is necessary to tilt or vibrate the box to compel the balls to roll through the passages 5 into the compartments 7, and it is necessary in order to properly complete the game to so manipulate the box as to compel the properly colored ball to enter the compartment corresponding to the same in color.
IVhile, of course, many rules might be adopted for playing a game with the puzzle, a simple rule is for the player to select a country that he desires to win, and then so manipulate the box as to compel all of the other balls to enter their compartments, leaving the selected ball for the last, and upon the completion of this plan, the player will be victorious. 9 represents a transparent cover which 15 supported on upwardly projecting lugs 10 on the outer ends of the partitions 3, and is confined by an overlapping flange 11 on the upper edge of the box 1, so that by means of these lugs 10, the transparent cover is positioned sufliciently above the bottom of the box to allow the balls to freely run.
While I have indicated on the puzzle five different compartments 7 indicating countries, I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to any particular number of such compartments, nor to any particular captions, and various other changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A puzzle consisting of a circular box having a circular series of partitions, said partitions forming a circular series of compartments adjacent the outer edge of the box with relatively narrow passages connecting the compartments with a central space, a series of balls of a size to pass through the passages, one ball being provided for each compartment, said compartments differently colored, and said balls colored in accordance with the colors of the compartments, substantially as described.
2. A puzzle consisting of a circular box having a circular series of partitions, said partitions forming a circular series of compartments adjacent the outer edge of the box with relatively narrow passages connecting the compartments with a central space, a series of balls of a size to pass through the passages, one ball being provided for each compartment, said compartments differently colored, said balls colored in accordance with the colors of the compartments, said. partitions having their inner faces curved concentrically with the outer Wall of the box, and said compartments containing the names of nations, substantially as described.
3. A puzzle comprising a circular box having its bottom pressed upwardly forming a circular series of approximately triangular shaped partitions dividing the box into a circular series of compartments with relatively narrow passages connecting the compartments with a central space, the inner walls of said partitions curved concentrically with the Wall of the boX, wherebV the central space is circular in form, balls in the boX corresponding in number and in color to the compartments and adapted to be moved through the passages, upwardly projecting lugs on the outer ends of the partitions, a transparent cover on said lugs, and an inwardly projecting flange on the box located. over the transparent cover, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence oi two subscribing witnesses.
ROSS F. McKENNA.
