ROUND-TOP WORK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LINDZA L. HURs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood Place, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Round-Top Work, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in round top work, and is applicable particularly to table tops and the like.
An object is to construct round top work of superior quality and at a lessened cost as compared with that of other methods.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, and illustrated, in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification; wherein is set forth an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that such changes and modifications may be resorted to as come within the scope of the claims appended hereunto.
In the drawings, in which like reference characters designate like parts in the several views, Figure 1, is a plan View of a blank from which a top is made. Fig. 2, is a plan view of a top and rim as out from the blank shown in Fig. 1, with the rim lying on top but not conformed or secured thereto; Fig. 3, is a plan view of the under surface of a top with a rim conformed to the curved edge thereof and secured in position thereon; Fig. 4, a view of the round edge of the top; Fig. 5, a view of the straight edge of the top illustrated; Fig. 6, a plan view of a fragment of the upper surface; Fig. 7, a section on line w-w of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings, 1, designates a veneered blank, rectangular in shape from which a top and rim is cut. The blank, 1, comprises a core, 2, of any suitable stock, usually strips of inferior quality, having applied to each surface, thereof, a plurality of superimposed layers of veneer, 3, and 4-. The method of building up these blanks is well known in the art, and a description thereof need not be entered into here. The blank 1 is taken to a band saw and a cut taken on the semi-circular line 5, the corners -6 falling of]? as waste. This leaves a semi-circular form from about which an are shaped strip 9- is taken, the out being made on the line 7 which is the boundary of the body of the top --8-. erably substantially the same as the thickness of the blank 1. The strip 9 is used to form a depending rim from the body portion being set on said body portion as shown in Fig. 2. It will be observed, that as the outer edge of the strip 9 is a portion of a larger circle than the edge of the body, the two edges do not coincide (the edge of the body being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2). Means, such as are well known in the art, are applied to spring the strip in until its outer edge is flush with the curved edge of the body, it is then secured in that position by suitable means such as nailing or gluing, or both, and the ends 10- which project beyond the straight edge ll of the body are cut 05 flush with said edge. The under surface of the top then presents the appearance shown in Fig. 3. The outer edges of the strip and body are then sandpapered preparatory to placing thereon a facing of veneer 1 which extends the entire length of the curved edge and from the upper surface of the body to the under side of the strip. The grain of this veneer preferably runs vertically. By this construction I produce a fine, substantial top having an appearance of massiveness, with superior graining and finish around the curved edges as well as on the upper surface, while at the same time completely covering up all end wood in the body and rim, and the edges of the veneer thereon, so that none of these parts are exposed to absorb moisture, to cause warping and swelling. The strip 9 being of the same wood with the grain thereof running substantially parallel with the grain of the body at all points where it is glued thereon, will expand and contract in the same ratio as the top thus avoiding any distortion or loosening of the veneer.
Having thus described my invention so that any one skilled in the art pertaining thereto may make the same, I claim 1. Round top work comprising a body portion having a curved outer edge, a rim affixed to the under side of said body portion and flush with the edge thereof, the grain of said rim being at all points substantially parallel with the grain of the body portion, and a facing of veneer covering the edges of said body and rim.
2. Round top work comprising a veneered body portion having a curved outer edge, a rim aflixed to and depending from said body portion, the edge of said rim being flush with the curved edge of the body portion, the grain of said rim lying substantially parallel with that of the body portion at all points, and a facing of veneer covering said flush edges.
3. Round top work in which a rim comprising a semi-circular strip cut from about the curved edge of the top is affixed to the underside of said top with its outer edge flush with the edge of the top, and a facing of veneer glued to and covering said flush edges.
4:. The method of making round top work which consists in forming a veneered blank,
cutting a semi-circular form therefrom, cutting an arc-shaped strip from about said semi-circular form, the remaining portion of said form constituting the body portion of a top, affixing said semicircular strip to the underside of said body portion with its outer edge flush with the curved edge of the body portion and covering said flush edges with a facing of veneer.
