Description

mi eine.
HENRY H. FOLSOM, OF LOWELL,
MASSACHUSETTS, AssieNoa To CHARLES CHASE, OF SAME'PLAOE.
Letters Patent No. 111,736, dated February 14, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT lN-DRlLL-RESTS'FOR TURNING-LATHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, HENRY H. FoLsoM, ot Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Drill-Rests, ot' which the following is' a specilication.
My invention relates to the combination ot`- a drillholder containing two or more holes for holding the drills when ihevsaid drills are in use, and a drill-rest; the whole when so formed. beingr easily and quickly adjusted to accommodate drills of any size required, without the removal of the drill-holder from therest.
It isfiequently necessary, in drilling iron or other metals with a drill which does not revolve, to use a number of different sizes of drills. rlhis necessitates a change in the size of the drillfholder, as' those commonly employed have but one hole orv receptacle for one size oi' drill, and this continual clnmging of the, drill holders necessitates also a corresponding change iu the elevation of the rest to enable .the drill to be always in a line with the center attached to the tail-stock ot the lathe, in order that the hole in the piece drilled should be true.
By these operations withthe common form of drill# holders and rests a great amount of time is consumed, which is entirely avoided by the use of my invention.
lhe accompanying drawing represents my improved drill-holder and rest with pieces broken `o1f-.
A isa drill-holder of any required form, containing tivo or more rectangular holes for the accoinmoilation of the dril-ls.
Said drill-holder is connected to the rest by means of a strong holt or screw, in such a manner as to allow the drill-holder to be easily adjusted by elevating or depressing said rectangular holes, and at the same time be firmly aftixed to, said rest.
B is the drill-rest adapted to the rest-post ot' a hand, lathe, or the tool-rest of an engine-lathe, said rest being connected to the drill-holder A, and having through itsarm a hole forthc reception of the hooked dog C, said hooked dog heilig intended to hohl the drill-holder iirmly in its place during the operation of drilling.
Then it is desirable to use thef drill-holder and rest, the rest isfastened into the said post of the lathe-rest. '.lhe. drill-holder is adjusted by turning it with the hand until the hole'adapted to accommodate the size of the drill to `be used appears in the right place, and the hooked dog, by operating the thumbnut, confines the drill-holder iirmly to the rest.
The drill-rest, 'as commonly used, consists of apiece of wrought-iron bent at right angles, one-halt' in length oi' said piece heilig rounded to fit into the restpostrof the lathe-rest, the other half in length being dat, with a rectangulaihole in the same near the end, for the accommodation of one size ot' drill.
e I claim as my inventionlhe combination of a drill-holder, A, containing two or more holes, with the drill-rest B, substantially as described. v
