I N YEN TO 1?.
W W BY p UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM COOPER, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
ROAD-MAKING MACHINERY.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, WILLmM Coornn, citizen of the United States, and residing in the city of Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented or discovered new and useful Improvements in Road-Making Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a new and improved road making machine.
One method of making roads is to first plow up the road surface; then saturate the same with oil or other hydrocarbons in a fluid state, and then roll the material to a smooth, hard surface. This method has proved efiicient in the case of both macadamized and dirt roads but the expense has been veryconsiderab e owing to the number of workmen, the time and the apparatus re uired.
y invention consists in a machine which in one o eration loosens and tears up the road surface, saturates the same deeply with oil and rolls the same hard and smooth again.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, certain parts being broken away in section for the sake of clearness; Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section of the rear scarifying roller and its mounting, the tender box being removed; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same along the line III-III in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section of a portlon of one of thescarifying teeth showing the method of mounting the same; Fig. 5
s a sectional detail of one of the scarifying rollers, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of one of the pressure control cylinders.
The following is a detailed description of the drawings.
The machine is composed of two main elements; the scarifier and saturator A and the surface of B which trails after and is preferably drawn by the former. The element A is preferably of the following general structure: 1 is the main frame upon which 13 mounted the source of locomotion and power, such as the steam engine outfit 2. The front of frame 1 is ward the rear thereof. The structure and mounting of the two scarifiers is substan- Specification of Letters Patent.
tially identical and therefore I will describe the same in detail in connection with the rear scarifier D. The scarifier is mounted on an axle or spindle 3 whose ends are enlarged and cylindrical to form hubs 4 which receive the cylindrical bearing blocks 5 mounted at either end of the axle 3 on the frame 1. Mounted on the axle 3 is a collar 6 which is provided with sockets 7 in which are secured the inner ends of spokes 8 WhlCh,
extend and are attached to the perimetal wall 9 of the scarifier. I have shown said spokes broken away for the sake of clearnessw The inner faceof the perimetal wall 9 is provided with a plurality of longitudinal integral oil chambers 10 whose ends are closed ,but which are connected with the bores of hubs 4 by means of feed tubes 11, every other or alternate chambers being connected with the same hub. Each bearing block 5 is provided with a downwardly extending radial" port 12 which commun cates at its inner end with the oil passage 13 in block 5. The oil passage 13 on each side of the machineis connected by a. pipe 14 with a pressure control cylinder 15. 16 are teeth removably mounted on the perimeter of the scarifier D by means of their shanks extending inwardly throu h snugly fitting holes in the we ls of t e chambers 10. The inner ends of said shanks are slotted to receive wedge keys 17 which securely, yet removably hold said teeth in place. Said teeth are provided with 011 passages 18 which communicate with the chambers 10 and discharge on the lower lateral face of the teeth.
It is evident that a chamber 10 wlll receive a charge of oil only when it is at the lower most point and its feed tube 11 is in vertical registration with the port 12 of the block 5 with which said tube 18 connected. Thus a longitudinal row of teeth admit oil to the road surface only when they are in engagement with said surface, the 011 being at other times out off from the row of teeth. One of the teeth is omltted in F1 3, to show more clearly the shape of cham rs 10. Each of the cylinders 15 is provided with an inlet port 19 near its dischar end, which inlet port is connected by a exlble connection 20 with an oil pump 21 suitably driven as by steam engine 22. A supply pipe 23 provided with a valve 24 supp ies oil from a tank 25 carried by the sur acer B. Said oil or other hydrocarbon 1s pref- Patented Nov. 1'7, 1914. Application filed Kay 14, 1914. erahly supplied with a heating medium, such as steam, as through the pipe 26 and heating coil 27. The cylinders are provided with resiliently mounted pistons 28 which relieve excess pressure where the hardness or nonabsorbing nature of the road surface cuts down the oil discharge through the passages 18 and also prevents knocking or hammering during the short intervals when oil is not being discharged through the teeth. The structure of the front scarifier C is similar to that of the rear scarifier D and the oil is supplied to its journal blocks through a pipe 29 leading at either side of the machine from the corresponding pipe 20. The rear scarifier D is suitably driven from the power plant 2 as by a train of ears in gear case 30 meshing with a bevele gear 31 on the end of sai scarifier.
E is the tender box which sets 0n-frame 1 and covers the rear scarifier. It may be used to hold fuel and water for the power p ant.
32 is a coupling between the scarifier A and the surfacer B.
It is evident from the foregoing that by means of my machine the operations of scarifying, saturating and resurfacing can be done at one operation. With the attention of one man many miles of road may be treated and completed in one day thus effecting a very substantial saving.
What I desire to claim is:
1. In a road making machine, a rotary drum, teeth mountedradially on said drum ada ted to scarify the road surface, said teet being provided with passages, said means for injecting fluid hydrocarbon through said passa es into road surface.
2. In a road ma ing machine, a rotary drum, teeth mounted radially on said drum adapted to scarify the road surface,'said teeth being provided with passages, and means for ejecting fluid hydrocarbon through said passages when said teeth are in contact with the road surface.
3. In a road making machine, a rotary drum, teeth mounted radially on said drum adapted to scarif the road surface, said teet being provi ed with passages, means for ejecting fluid hydrocarbon through saidpassages when said teeth are in contact with the road surface, and means for cutting off the supply of h drocarbon from the teeth out of contact with the road surface.
