T0 all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD W. UHLIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, of which the following is a specifica-tion.
My invention relates mainly to finely variable line-spacing mechanisms for typewriting machines, the primary object being to enable the operator to obtain mechanically any desired line-spacing interval, without the delay of repeated trial adjustments, thusv greatly facilitating his work and rendering the regulation of the line-spacing interval easy and rapid.
My line-spacing mechanism is completely variable within the extremes of its position, z'. e. it may be set to any position Whatever, within its limits of position.
The desired adjustment is secured by merely operating the line-spacing lever in the usual manner to rotate the platen through the line-spacing interval desired. The line-spacing lever, in addition to rotating the platen, also effects the adjustment of certain devices, which thereafter may limit the step-by-step advance of the platen. In other word-s, the line-space regulating mechanism is adjusted simultaneously with the rotation of-the platen by the usual lever through the required line-space interval.
The invention is particularly useful in writing on sheets having ruled lines, as well as for other purposes.
In carrying out the invention, I provide thc platen with a finely adjustable clutch mechanism driven by a line-spacing handle or lever. Permanent and shiftable stops control the throw of the clutch mechanism. A gage is adj ustably mounted on the shift.- able stop, to be set by the throw of the line-spacing lever. Upon being adjusted, the gage is locked, and thereafter determ'i nes the position of said shiftable stop, and hence controls the throw' of the line-space lever itself.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one embodiment of my invention applied to the Underwood type ofv front strike writing machine, the linespacing mechanism being shown at the termination of its line-spacing Specification of Letters Patent.

The platen A-i's mounted on an axle 1 journaled in the ends of a platen frame 2, on which axle i's fixed a ratchet 3 engaged by a tooth 11 carried by a pawl 12 pivoted to a slide 13 driven by the usual line-spacing-lever 15, against the tension ofl a return spring 14. By operating the line-spacing lever,\the slide carrying the pawl and tooth,
is forced rearwardly to bring the tooth intoy mesh with the ratchet wheel 3 to rotate the platen for regular line-spacing, the slide and lits connected parts being returned to inac` tive position by the spring 14. 4
A line-spacing clutch-mechanism forl effecting minute adjustments of the line-spac-l ing intervals includes preferably, an annu lar clutch Harige 4 conveniently mounted on the ratchet wheel 3 and engaged by the jaws 6 of'a clutching dog 5 pivotally mounted on a carrier 7, the latter journalcd on the platen axle adjacent the wheel 3, and the clutch dog being held yieldingly by a spring 31 against a stop 272. Pressure against the clutching dog operates to vibrate the latter to cause its jaws G to bite the clutch tiange 4L, and then rotates the carrier and clutch flange to turn vthe platen, the carrier andclutching dog being spring-returned to normal inactive positions, when the pres- -sure against the clutch dog is removed.
Preferably the driving tooth 11 is laterally shiftable to enable either the regular line-spacing mechanism or the clutch linespacing mechanism to be operated at will by the line-spacing lever, and normally the tooth 11.is held by a spring 16 in position to engage the ratchet 3. When it is desired to operate the clutch mechanism, a switch 17 controlled by a lever 18 is swung to force the tooth laterally out of operative position relativeto the ratchet and into position to effectthe operation of the clutch mechanism when the line-space lever 15 is actuated. The tooth 11 carries a stud 1U,
' which, when the tooth is shifted out of operative position with the ratchet wheel 3, engages beneath a shoulder 9 on a lever 8 pi'voted to the carrier 7, the head of the lever engaging the outer end ci? the clutching dog 5 to actuate the latter,
To reduce the line-spacing intervals, the stop 22, against which the clutching dog 5 lies whenat rest, is mounted so as to be adjusted toward a permanent stop 21 to reduce the distance the clutching dog travels at each line-space operation. The adjust able stop 22 is held yieldingly in one position by a spring 24; a lug Q5 carried by the adjustable stop engaging the permanent stop 21 to limit the distance to which the adjustable stop can be urged by the spring. The shiitable stop QQ carries an arm 23, on which is adjustably mounted a gage 27. For illustration, the shi'ttable stop "lo and its arm 23 may be regarded as a rotatable elbow lever embracingA a fined stop 21, so that rotation ot' the gage-carrying arm away from the permanent stop will cause the remaining arm or stop 2Q to advance toward the fixed stop 21 and thus decrease the distance afforded for the throw of the clutching dog between the stops. The gage is yieldingly held in one position b v a spring 20.
A regulating finger 30 is provided on the dog carrier 7. which finger (when the lever 1,5 is being preliminarilv employed for the purpose oit settingthe line-space regulator) sets the gage 27 relative to the stop QQ and against the tension of the spring The gage when set is secured by a nut 3Q on a threaded bolt QS carried bv the arm 23 and passing through a slot in the gage. A handle 33 is connected to the nut both to opthe tension of the spring 521-, to move the stop toward the permanent stop Q1. This movement continues until the gage is caught and held by a latch To use the mechanism 'for regulating or determinating the proper line-spacing in` terval for a. ruled sheet, t'or instance, so that the typewritten words wiil tall on the ruled lines, the sheet is inserted in the machine, and one of the ruled lines thereof is brought to the printing point. The operator then slowly ope ates the line-spacing lever l5, and this through tooth 1l moves dog 5 and the rest of the clutch i'neclianism from its position of rest, shown in Fig. not only to rotate the platen and paper carried thereby, but also to bring the regulating finger 80 from its normal position ot' rest, shown in Fig. "2, to the po ition shown in Fig. 3, to depress the gage i? more or less, as shown in Fig. el, until the succeeding ruled line on the sheet appears at the printing point on the platen. Thereugion the gage is secured by turning the handle 38 and nut 3Q. Continued movement ot this han- (lle 33 in the same direction now rotates the shiftahle stop about the axis 1 toward the permanent stop 31, against thel tension of spring 24, until the gage 2T is enffaged by the latch 36 to hold the shiftablc stop 22 in adjusted position; where it remains during the subsequent operation of the machine.
Sulsequent operations of the line-spacing lever will throw the platen through intel vals equal to the interval just measured by the linespacing lever when adjusting the regulating mechanistic in the manner described.

It. on the other hand. the lever l5 sets the gage F27 down a great distance, then the movement of the stop 22. subsequentlyr effected by handle 33 will be correspond in gly small.
To release the linespace regulating met/:hanism, the handle 33 releases nut 32 Jfrom the gage 27. and strikes a pin 39 on the latch h6 to turn it and release the gage 27, whereupon the spring 24 swings the stop away from the permanent stop 21., and lug Q5 strikes the permanent stop 21. Spring 9.9 elevates the gage.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a laten, a line-spacing mechanism therefor, including a lever, and a shiftable stop controlling the line-spacing throw of the platen, of a regulating mechanism, including a'shiftable gage connected to the stop and settable at a point determined by the line-spacing lever for determining the extent of shift of the stop to vary the linespacing interval, a locking device for de.- taining the gage where adjusted, and a finger-piece to operate the locking device.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen` a line-spacing mechanism therefor, including a lever, and a shiftable stop controlling the line-spacing throw of the platen, of a regulating mechanism, including ashiftable gage connected to the stop and settable at a point determined by the line-spacing lever for determining the extent of shift of the stop to vary the line-spacing interval, a locking device for detaining the gage in adjusted position, a finger piece to operate the locking device, and an arrester for limiting the swing of the finger piece.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, and a line-spacing mechanism therefor, including a lever, of a spring-actuated shiftable stop controlling the throw of the line-spacing mechanism and platen, regulating mechanism including a gage set at a point determined by the linespaclng lever for determining the extent to which the stop shall be shifted, whereby to vary the line-space interval, a stop-shifting device for locking the gage in adjusted position and for shifting the stop, and a retaining device .automatically operating to retain the stop in its shifted position.

In a typewriting machine, the vcombination with a platen, line-spacing mechanism therefor, including a lever, and an adjustable stop controlling the throw of the line-space mechanism and platen, of an adjusting mechanism for the stop whereby to ei'ect variations of the line-space intervals, a member operated by thc spacing lever for adjusting the regulating mechanism, and means for holding said mechanism in adjusted position.

28. In a typewriting machine, the 'combination with a. platen, and a line-spacing mechanism therefor including a lever, of a shift-.able stop controlling the throw of the line-space mechanism and platen, a gage adjustably connected with the stop, and a member operated by the spacing lever for adjusting the gage, means foi-'holding the gage in adjustable position whereby to effect variations in the line-spacing interval.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, and a line-spacing vmechanism therefor, including a lever, of,l a shiftable stop controlling the throw of the line-space mechanism and platen, a gage adjustably connected ith the stop, a member operated by thel spacing lever for adjusting the gage-relatively to the stop, a lock for releasably retaining the gage in its adjusted position and for rocking the stop and gage bodily to effect variations in the line-.space interval, and a shiftable latch for preventing the stop from returning to the position from which it was rocked.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, and a line-spacing mechanism therefor including a lever, of a shift-able stop controlling the throw of the line-space mechanism and platen, a gage adjustably connected with the stop, a member operated by the spacing lever for adjusting the gage relatively to the4 stop, a lock for releasably retaining the gage in its adjusted position and for rockingthe stop and gage bodily to effect variations in the line-space interval, and a shiftable latch automatically projected into the path of return movement of the gage to prevent the stop from returning to the position from which it was rocked.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, and a line-spacing mechanism therefor including a lever, of a shiftable stop controlling the throw of the line-space mechanism and platen, a gage adjustably connected with the stop and set at a point determined by the spacing lever relatively to the stop, a locking device for retaining the gage in adjusted position, said locking device having a handle for rocking the stop and gage bodily .to 'shift the stop in effecting variations in the' line-space interval, and a latch with which the gage is brought into engagement in shifting the stop, to maintain'the stop in shifted position.
32. In a typewriting machine. the combination with a platen, and a line-spacing mechanism therefor, including a lever, of a shiitable stop controlling the throw of the line-space mechanism and platen, a gage adjustably connected with the stop and set at a point determined by the spacing lever relatively to the stop, a locking device for retaining the gage in adjusted position,said locking device having a handle for rocking the stop and gage bodily to shift the stop in effecting variations in the line-space interval, and a latch with which the gage is brought into engagement in shifting the stop, to maintain the stop in shifted position; the latch being engaged by the handle when releasing the gage, to effect the disengagement of the latch and gage.
33. In a typewriting machine. the combination with a platen, and a. line-spacingY mechanism therefor, including a lever. o? a shiftable stop controlling the throw ol' the line-space mechanism and platen. a gage :ul-
j ust-ably connected with the stop, a member operated by the spacing lever for adjusting the gage relatively to the stop, a lock for releasably retaining the gage in its set position and for rocking the stop and gage bodily to effect variations in the line-space interval, a shiftable retaining device automatically projected into the path of the gage to retain the stop in shifted position, and a projection on the. retaining device engaged by the lock-ing handle when moved to release position to effect the disengagement of the latch and gage.
34. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, a line-spacing mechanism therefor, including a lever, and a shiftable stop controlling the line-spacing throw of the, platen, of an adjustable gage controlled by the line-spacing lever for effecting the adjustment of the shiftable stop to vary the line-spacing interval, a spacing device, a latch, and means whereby said latch is auto-V matically projected into operative engagement with the gage when the stop has been shifted the predetermined distance, for detaining the stop in adjusted position.
35. In a typeWrit-ing machine, the combination with a platen, of a line spacing mechanism completely variable within the extremes, said mechanism including a clutch and also including a lever, and an adjustable regulating mechanism therefor, the adjustment of which mechanism is determined by the lever. y

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a line-spacing clutch mechanism, minutely adjustable within its limits of movement, including a lever, a regulating mechanism therefor including an adjustable gage the adjustment of which is determined by the lever, and a locking means for detaining the regulating mechanism in adjusted position.
38. In. a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a line-spacing clutch mechanism including a lever, a regulating mechanism therefor including a gage, meansconnected with the lever whereby to adjust the gage, a latch, and means whereby said latch is made to coperate with the gage in order to maintain the regulating mechanism in adjusted position.
39.
