areas-sane CLEAKISR imam To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Haanm E. Somme, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dexter, in the county of Perry and State of Indians, have invented certain new and use- Improvements in Spark-Plug Cleaners, of which the following 18 a specification.
This invention has relation to spark plugs for internal combustion engines and more articularly to devices specially designed or cleaning the points of the plug and preventing the collection of carbon and other non-conducting material thereon.
An ob'ect of the invention is t'neprovision of a device of this character having connection with a driven part of the engine wheres by the cleaner is actuated subsequently to each explosion to clean the deposit of carbon resulting from the explosion.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described,
claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents a fragmental sectional view through the cylinder of the internal combustion engine,"showing the application of my invention thereto, and, Fig. 2 repre sents a, transverse sectional view of the cleaner brush.
Referring to the drawing in detail, where-- in similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the head of the cylinder of the internal combustion en %ilne having an intake or exhaust port Q t erein adapted to be intermittently closed by a valve 3 carrying a stem 4 adapted to be operated by one end of the rocker arm 5 pivoted at 6 in the supporting bracket 7 and connected at its opposite end with the valve rod 8. The port 2 in the cylinder communicates with the pipe 9 for conduct: in the products of combustion from the cy inder or feeding the liquid fuel thereto. Adjacent the intake port 2 a threaded opening 10 is formed in the cylinder 1 receiving a plug 1 having an angular head 12 carrying the eup'oorting bracket 7. If desired, the bracket a may be formed integral with or secured directly to the cylinder 1 The plug 11 formed with a threaded aperture 12 receiving the body of a spark plug 13 having spaced points 14 providing a illustrated in Fig. i, the graints 14 are dirooted laterally (if-the body of the in whereby they may be cleaned by the brass hereinafter described. The opening 12 in the plug is formed eccentrioally therein. and a second opening 16 is formed therethrough having a threaded boss 17 at one end carrymg a packing nut 18, i
A cylindrical shank 19 of the brush is slidably positioned through the opening 16 and through the can or nut 18 and is pivotally mounted by a pin 29 in the slot- 21 formed in the rocker arm 5 intermediate the pivotal axis 6 thereof and the valve actuatin end.
he shank 1 3 extends into the cylinder 1 and is formed with a pair of parallel spaced flanges 22 directed toward the plug 13 and providing a housing for a plurality of Wires 23 also directed toward the plug 13.
In operation atcd by the valve rod 8 having connection with the engine shaft or other part thereof seating and unseating the valve 3 as the piston reciprocates Within the cylinder 1. Obviously, the valve 3 is opened subse quently to the explosion within the cylinder 1 and as the latter is takin gas. The inward movement of one on of the rocker arm 5 causing the opening of the Valve 3,
moves the shank 13 of the brush inwardly rushing the wires across the points 14, thus effectively cleaning" the latter. As the cylinder is primed for the'next explosion, the valve 3 is closed by the rocker or 5, the latter throwing the shank 19 outwardly and moving the brush to its normal full line position.
What I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a cylinder, 11 valve therefor, valve operating means, and a spark plug; of a cleaner member connected with said operating means extendin within Said cylinder and adapted to clean tile points of said spark plug.
2, A device of the character described comprising the combination with a. cylinder, 11 valve therein, operating means for the valve, and a spark plugnof a shank connected with said 0 crating means, and cleaner means carrie by the inner end of said shank adapted to he reciprocated across the points of said spark plug;
3. The combination with a cylinder, a
spark gap 15 therebetween. As clearly valve therein, operating moons for the valve,
the rocker arm 5 is actu-' Patented Nov. 10, 1814.
spark plug, a shank slidablethrough said cylinder and having pivotal connectiun wi h said valve operatmg means, spark plug nleaning means carried by the inner end of i said shank and flanges on said shank engagin sail cleanin means 4:. 'l he COHlbil'lltlOll with a cylinder a' valve operable in said cylindflr, operatmg I means for said valYe, a plug removably 38- I cured in said aylinder, a spark plug r'e- I movably secured in said plug, 01 a shank a u a s'nclable m saui plug and .havmg plvotal conl nection at its outer end with saifi valve opemtin means, and a, brush on the inner end of sai shank adapted to be reciprocated acrcss the points of said spark plug t0 clean the latter.
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
