1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD B. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the countyof Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Drawing or Stamping Metal; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is a novel improvement in multi-stage presses or machines for drawing or stamping metal; and its particular object is to enable a plurality of operations to be performed upon a blank without manual handling thereof.
The invention comprises a plurality of operative mechanisms and novel means for automatically carrying the blanks delivcred from one mechanism to the next mechanism, to be operated upon thereby before being discharged from the machine.
The machine shown in the drawings has two mechanisms adapted to successively operate upon blanks, and novel means for transferring the objects being worked from one mechanism to the other; and a descrip tion of such machine will suflice to explain the essential characteristics of the inven tion, but the capacity ofthe machine can be increased by using a larger number of mechanisms in such relation to the blank carrier or transferring devices as will enable an increased number of operations to be performed upon the blank or object in its passage through the machine.
The specific machine shown in said drawings comprises a double-acting draw press and a single acting draw press arranged in the same main frame, and preferably side by side and with the bed of one below the bed of the other; with a transferring device or rotary carrier which receives the blanks after being operated upon by the double action press and transfers them to position to be acted upon by the single acting press.
This carrier is preferably arranged to op-.
erate beneath the die plate or bed of the double acting press and above the die plate or bed of the single acting press. In the preferred form of the machine this carrier is made annular and surroundsfthe central column of the machine.
Other novel features of the invention will be hereinafter explained in connection with the detailed description of the machine illustrated in the said-drawings; which will suffice to enable those skilled in the art to utilize the invention; it being understood that the particular construction of the draw presses or operative mechanisms of the machine, arenot per scessential features of the present invention; the features and combinations of parts for which protection is desired being summarized in the claims.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a. side elevation of a machine embodying the preferred form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse sectional view thereof, on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking downward. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional viewon line 33,, Fig. 2.
Asillustrated in the drawings, in the main frame of the machine are mounted a double acting'draw press, or other operative mechanism, and a single acting draw press, or other operative mechanism, these being arranged side by side. For convenience I will hereinafter refer to these mechanisms as double-press and single pressbut such terms are merely illustrative of the inventiomand not definitive thereofand are intended to include any mechanisms with which the novel blankor object trans- As shown the single acting press portion of the frameof the machine has a bed 1 and uprights 2 and 2 which are connected by a top bar 3, and said uprights are provided on their inner faces withguides for a vertically movable cross-head a connected by a pit man 4 with a crank 5 on a main shaft 5 suitably journaled' in the uprights 2, "2 The cross head 1 is provided with a drawing tool 4P of any suitable construction adapted to cooperate with a suitable die f on the bed 1 in the usual manner. The doublepress portion has a bed 1, preferably standing above the bed 1 and connecting the central member 2? with an outside upright 2 parts 2* and 2*, being connected by a top member 3 is a vertically movable cross head 7, which may be operated by means of pitman 7 a connected to cranks or eccentrics 5 on the shaft 5; and within the cross head is a reciprocatory plunger 8 which may be connected by a pitman 8 with a crank or eccentric 5 on shaft 5. These parts may be of any desired or preferred well known construction and arrangement and are adapted to reciprocate the cross head 7 and plunger 8 in Patented Nov. 1c, 1914:.

such manner that, as usual, the die 7 attached to cross head 7 will operate before the drawing tool 8 attached to the plunger 8. The die 7 first cuts a blank from a sheet of metal interposed between it and a suitable die on the bed 1 and then dwells while the plunger 8 works inside and through the cross head 7 and causes the tool 8 to draw the metal blank through a die 8 on the bed 1 in the usual manner.
The shaft 5 may be driven by gears 5 on its end meshing with pinions (i on a countershaft 6 provided with a belt pulley 6, or other means for actuating same. This construction relieves torsional strain on the shaft 5 when in operation.
The operative parts thus far described, except for their relative grouping and arrangement, may be of any usual or desired construction.
In the preferred form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 I employ an annular carrier 9 to receive the object or blanks forced through the die 8 and carry them into position over the die 4 to be operated upon by the tool l- Said carrier 9 may be made in sections rigidly bolted together as indicated at 9 so that it can be readily as sembled in position around the lower portion of the standard 2 and said carrier may be supported above the bed 1 and below the bed 1 in any suitable way so that it can be rotated in a horizontal plane, and around the standard 2. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 this carrier 9 may be rotatably supported upon a split collar 10 bolted around the lower portion of the standard 2, said collar 10 being circular and fitted within a circular flange 9 on the lower side of the carrier 9 to prevent lateral displacement of said carrier during its rotation; and said carrier may be mounted upon this collar by ball bearings 1O as indicated in Fig. 3.
The carrier may be rotated step by step by any suitable means; in the drawings the flange 9 is shown as provided with ratchet teeth 9 on its exterior periphery adapted to be engaged by a reciprocatory ratchet lever 11, which may be yieldingly held in contact with the ratchet teeth 9 by a suitable spring, as 11, and which may be reciprocated by any suitable means. The outer end of lever 11 is connected by a pivotal joint 11 to one arm of a bell crank lever 12, pivoted at 12 on a bracket attached to the standard 2, and the other arm of this lever is pivotally connected at 12 to the lower end of a vertical rod 13, the upper end of which may be slotted to pass the shaft 5, and carries a pin 5 engaging a cam 5, attached to the shaft 5, so that during each rotation of shaft 5 the rod 11 will be reciprocated and move the carrier 9 one step. This carrier 9 is provided with a series of apertures 9 which are adapted to successively register with an opening S in bed 1 below die 8, and with an opening 4 in bed 1 above die 1-; and the presses are so operated that after a blank (indicated in dotted line at B) is forced by tool 8 through the die 8 it drops into one of the apertures 9 in the carrier, and is retained therein, and ultimately brought by said carrier into position abovethe die 4:, and while in such position the tool a will descend and eject the blank from the carrier and force it through the die l and discharge it through the opening 4.
In a machine such as shown in Fig. 1, three distinct operations will be automatically performed on each blank passing through the machine; for instance, the die 7" will cut a blank from the material; the tool 8 will press said blank through the die 8 and discharge it into the carrier 9; this carrier will then take the same blank around to die 4:, where it will be engaged by the tool 4" and forced through the die 41-, and discharged through the opening 4. By having the carrier operate below one bed and above the other the blanks discharged from the first press are more readily brought into proper position for operation upon the second press.
A machine embodying the invention practically has all the capacity of two separate machines and is more economical to construct and operate than two separate machines. The central standard takes the place of two of the side columns of the separate machines; and but one crank shaft is required. The invention further obviates the necessity of employing an attendant operator for the second press. The invention furthermore not only reduces the cost of construction and enhances the speed of pro duction, but lessens the number of operatives required and reduces the liability of accidents to such operatives as no manual handling is required to feed objects to the second mechanism.
vVhile T have shown a plurality of presses or mechanisms as arranged side by side, I do not consider the invention restricted to the exact arrangement shown, nor to the specific form of construction herein shown.
By this invention I provide a double or plural machine which may have a single action movement on each side, or a double action movement on each side, or a double action movement on one side and a single action on the other; and which. has a carrier preferably revolving around the center column or standard, and adapted to re ceive work from one mechanism and carry it into position to be operated upon by the other mechanism.
lVhat I claim is:
1. in combination, a main frame having central and side standards and beds between the said standards, and a carrier in line with the central standard and moving around it adapted to receive objects from one bed and carry same around the central standard to and over the other bed into position to be operated upon, and means for operating said carrier.
2. In combination, a main frame having central and side standards and beds between the said standards, and a carrier arranged below the bed of one press and above the bed of the other in line with the central standard and moving around it and adapted to receive objects from one bed and carry same around the central standard to and over the other bed into position to be operated upon, and means for operating said carrier.
3. In combination, a main frame having central and side standards, and beds and press mechanisms arranged between the said standards; a carrier movable around the central standard and arranged below the bed of one press and above the bed of the other adapted to receive objects operated upon by one press and carry same around the central standard to and over the other bed into position to be operated upon by the other press, and means for operating said carrier.
4. In combination, a main frame having central and side standards, adjacent press mechanisms arranged between the said standards, an annular carrier surrounding the central column adapted to receive the objects operated upon by one press and carry same into position to be operated upon by the other press, and means for operating said carrier.
5. In combination, a main frame having central and side standards and adjacent press mechanisms arranged between the said standards, and an annular carrier arranged below the bed of one press and above the bed of the other and surrounding the central column, said carrier being adapted to receive an object operated upon by one press and carry it over into position to be operated upon by the other press, and means for operating said carrier.
6. In combination, a main frame having central and side standards, beds between the standards, and reciprocatory cross heads between the standards above the beds, a carrier movable around the central standard and mounted to rotate below the bed of one press and above the bed of the other press and adapted to carry an object discharged from one bed around the central standard into position to be operated upon on the other bed, and means for rotating this carrier step by step.
7. In combination, a main frame having central and side standards, die supporting beds between the standards, and reciprocatory cross heads arranged between the standards above the beds, a carrier movable around the central standard and mounted to rotate below the bed of one press and above the bed of the other press and adapted to carry an object discharged from one press around the central standard into position to be operated upon by the other press, and means-for rotating t is carrier step by step.
8. A drawing press comprising a main frame having central and side standards, die supporting beds between the standards, and reciprocatory cross heads arranged between the standards, an annular carrier mounted to rotate around the central standard below the bed of one pressand above the-bed of the other press and adapted to carry an object discharged from one press into position to be operated upon by the other press, and means for rotating this carrier step by step.
9. I11 combination, a main frame having central and side standards, beds between the standards, and reciprocatory cross heads between the standards above the beds, a carrier rotating on a vertical axis intermediate the beds and in a plane below one bed andabove th other, and adapted as it rotates to carry an object discharged from one bed into position to be operated upon on the other bed, andmeans for rotating the carrier.
10. In combination, a main frame having central and side standards, and press mechanisms comprising cross-heads and cooperating beds arranged between the said standards; a rotatable carrier arranged to rotate on a vertical axis in line with the central standard and below the bed of one press mechanism and above the bed of the other press mechanism, said carrier being adapted to receive objects discharged from one press mechanism and by its rotation to carry same over into position to be operated upon by the other press mechanism, and means for rotating sald carrier.
