M invention consistsof a section liner in which provision is made ruler thereof in opposite operation of members on the traveler which carries said ruler, said traveler being fitted on a guide rod which is stationary intits nature, and so not shiftable or' movable by said traveler. r
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof maybe and so it is to-be understood that the invention is not limited to thespecific details shown and described.

Referringto the drawings, 1 designates the base of the section liner from which rise at or about the opposite ends thereof, the ears 2 to which are firmly and stationarily secured the guide rod 3 of the device.
4 designates a traveler to which is plvotruler 5, said traveler consisting of a plate which rests freely on the base 1, and has on its sides the eyes 6 which rise from said plate and freely embrace the rod 3, so that the traveler is movable to the right and left on said rod.

The operation is as follows, it being noticed that the springs 14 primarily exert pressure on the piece 12 equally on opposite sides of the boss 18 thereof The ruler is set at the desired angle and the stop members 15 are adjusted relative to the throw to be imparted to-the piece 12 and the resultant movements of the ruler for the distance apart of lines to be marked-off at the ruler. To move the ruler to the right, the thumb is applied to the left hand screw 17 andthe forefinger to the piece 12. The thumb is then pressed to the right and the piece to the left. This imparts a positive motion to the traveler to the right, and with it the ruler. The piece 12, however, receives motion to the left. Then said piece and the lugs 20 left hand stop ear 6 contacts and so the whose 'coils are adapted to be compressed On the plate ofthe traveler on opposite may be moved to the right or left, and so traveler ceases its motion. Meanwhile, the left hand spring is contracted and the right hand spring is allowed to expand. Then when the piece and screw are let go, the compressed spring restores the piece to its normal position equidistant between the two screws, the springs then being in equi librium. The operations of. the left hand screw and piece are repeated when the traveler receives another motion to the right and so the ruler is moved another lining distance, To move the ruler to the left, the thumb is applied to the piece 12 and the forefinger to the right hand screw 17. Then said finger and screw are moved toward each other by the forefinger and thumb until the stop ear of said screw and said piece contact, the traveler having received positive motion to the left and with it the ruler for section lining to the left. Meanwhile, the right hand spring is compressed and the left hand spring allowed toexpand, so that when the right hand screw and piece are let go, the expanded spring restores the finger piece to its normal position. It will be seen that the operation of the traveler either to the right or left is accomplished by the application of the human hand to two screws, and a single finger piece, the latter being intermediate of the former.
In order to set the members 15 with precision, the traveler plate is provided with gages or scales 21 which are adjacent to the inner ends and outer sides of the bars 15.
As it is desired to hold the traveler and consequently the ruler at rest when the latter has completed its motion and so prevented from motion to the most sensitive extent, I employ the spring 22 composed preferably of a plate having on the ends thereof the limbs 23, in which are openings to receive the rod 3 and embrace the same with sufficient friction to retain the traveler when at rest, but the same may be overcome by the superior power applied to the piece 12 in moving the traveler. The spring plate is located over the traveler and has its cen tral portion occupying a recess 24: in the side of a post 25, thus retaining the plate in connection with the traveler in the set position of said spring plate, but the limbs 23 thereof are in contact with the eyesfi of the traveler, and so made movable with the same, without liability to turn on the rod, owing to the engagement therewith of said recessed post.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a section liner, a traveler, a ruler thereon, a stationary guide rod on which said traveler is slidably mounted, a hand engaging member on said traveler and a handengaging member mounted slidably on said rod adapted to operate said traveler a predetermined extent in opposite directions and springs upon opposite sides of the lastnamed member.
2. In a section liner, a traveler, hand-engaging members thereon, a ruler on said. traveler, a stationary guide rod on which said traveler is slidably mounted, a handengaging member on said rod intermediate of the hand-engaging members on the traveler, and movable thereon in opposite directions and adapted, with said hand-engaging members on the traveler, to operate the latter a predetermined extent either to the right or left and a resilient device adapted to be compressed by the movement of the hand-engaging member on the rod.
3. In a section liner, a traveler, a ruler thereon, a stationary guide rod on which said traveler is slidably mounted, a hand engaging member slidable on said traveler and mounted freely on said rod adapted to operate said traveler a predetermined extent in opposite directions, a resilient device interposed between said hand engaging member and a suitable portion of said traveler and adapted to be contracted by the motion of said member and adjustable stop members on said traveler to limit the movement of said hand-engaging member.
4:. A stationary guide rod, a traveler, a main hand-engaging member mounted slidably on said rod and freely over said traveler, and adjustable auxiliary hand engaging members respectively on opposite sides of said main hand engaging member, said auxiliary hand engaging members being connected with said traveler.
5. In a section liner, thereon, astationary guide rod on which said traveler is slidably mounted, and a hand engaging member slidable on said traveler mounted freely on said rod and adapted to operate said traveler a predetermined extent in opposite directions, a friction device for said traveler connected with the latter and engageable with said guide rod and adjustable stop members between which said hand-engaging member is movable.
6. in a section liner, a traveler, a ruler thereon, a stationary guide rod for said traveler and a plurality of hand engaging devices for effecting the motion of the traveler in opposite directions, the same being connected respectively loosely with said rod and fixedly with said traveler, and a resilient member adapted to be compressed by one of said hand-engaging members.

12. In a section liner, a stationary rod, a traveler mounted thereon, and a spring plate connected with said traveler and having limbs adapted to frictionally' embrace said rod, and a post on said traveler engaging said plate to retain the latter in set-position on t e former.
