applicsvtion filed May 27, 181A. semrzsrawees. i 1
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR Far/K, a'citizen of the United States, residing at New York, inthecounty of New Yorkand State of New York, hav invented certain new :and useful improvements in Eispensing-Paekages, of which "the following is a specifica- 't'IOH.
This invention relates to the subject of packages for cigarettes, and the primary aim of the invention is to produce a ciga rette package which will revent the contents of the package from eterioration and permit access to be freely !had to said contents.
The invention contemplates a cigarette. package "the inner wrapper of which is formed of air and moisture 'proof material having ends folded aand overlapped tol seal theends of the package, one of the ends: being "so harmed that it may be readily opened to permit a cigarette'to'be removed; and said end then restored to its normal}? position to seal the package, the packagef bein inc'losed in a wrapperone'end portion 1 of w ich is' weakened and "folded to firom sealing flaps which, whenopened, form a'; finger igrip' :tihat gtacilitates tearing-off the; weakened portion of the outer-Wrapper, so that access may be had to the end' of the package that is to be opened to give access to the cigarettes, the removable end of thewrapper being so disposed relative -to the. package cthat when said end :removed, :the wrapper remains on and forms a protector. thatprevents the package collapsing.
One simple and preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the acompanying drawings, whereinv Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved package, the outer wrapper having itsremovable end in position to be torn-off to give access to the loose flaps of the inner wrapper. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the removable end partly detached and exposing the loose flaps of the inner wrapper. Fig. 3 is a perspective View, the removable end of the outer wrapper being torn-off and the adjacent end of the inner wrapper being opened. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the outer wrapper.
The improved package comprises an inner Wrapper 1 formed of tin foil or other air and moisture proof material, and a loose paper lining 2 therefor. The wrapper 1 and the-ilining-Z are shaped to form a container which may be rectangular or any other simpe, and the ends thereof are folded to form the side flaps '3 and top and bottom flaps 4 and *5 respectively. The bottom flaps tare folded inwardlyythe side flaps 3 then folded onto the flaps 5, and the top flaps-4 are then folded over the saidside and' bot- '-tom=fla ps. The flaps areti-g'htl folded in --their overlapped relation descri-ed, and at r 1 andthe lining 2 is-such chat-mesa margin, afieatureof the-inventionthatjs oi nnportarnoe in that in much arrangement seals the meeting edges of said .wrappenand ili-ning, and also ifonms a reinforc'ement at sash pofintof tour-layers of the wrapper and linin as indicated 'gener ally by the nuwere 6. The overlapped portionswf the wrapper 1 and lining fiiare:preterablymot permanently connected, lhu t obviously adhesive material may be used to obtain a pe manent-canne tion-i suchiis desired.
Elie package so far described is an air and moisture proof one, the end thereof that is closed by the loose flaps being sealed tight by said flaps as the foil wrapper 1 retains the shape and position in which it is folded, yet such loose flaps can be readily opened to permit the removal of a cigarette, and then readily restored to their overlapped positions to tightly seal the package, such opening and closing of the loose flaps having no tendency to damage the package. An outer wrapper 7 incloses the package, the wrapper 7 bein preferably of paper and in the form 0 an advertising label. The ends of the wrapper 7 are folded to form side flaps 8, bottom flaps 9 and top flaps 10, similar to the flaps of the wrapper 1 and lining 2. The flaps of the wrapper 7 at the permanently sealed end of the wrapper 1 are also permanently sealed in over lapped relation, and at the other end of :may be opened to ;10 are provided by infolding the sides to.
material. This arrangement, combined with wrapper 7, the flaps are folded in overlapped relation in a manner similar to the folding of the loose flaps, and the top flap 10 is supplied with a small amount of" adhesive material, just sulficient to cause it to lightly adhere to the bottom flap 9. At the junction of the body of the wrapper 7 and its sealing flaps 8, 9 and 10, the body is weakened transversely by the indentations, perforations, or other weakening means, 11, so that by releasing the flap 10 from the flap 9 and using said flap 10 as a finger grip, the entire end portion of the wrapper 7 may be readily torn-oil at the weakenedportion 11 so that the loose flaps of the wrapper 1 and lining 2 are exposed and give aa'cess to the contents of the package. 1 I p It will be-observed that the ,fiapsB, 9 and form the flaps 8, and such infolding causes the top flap 10 to be formed of two layers of material, an advantageous feature in that sufiicient reinforcement. is thereby imparted to the flap 10 so that when said flap is used as a finger-grip, it assures'thatthe-strain exerted will cause the end of the Wrapper, to be separated from the body'thereof at the weakened line 11. Y i 1 The label 7 entirely incloses the package 3 and its longitudinal meeting edges are permanently connected by the use-of adhesive the'permanently sea-led end of the wrapper, or label,. causes the 'label'to'form a cup-l shaped'protector in which the package remains after the weakened end of the label has been removed, that retains the package in its original shapeand also prevents the contents of the package being damaged by displacement or other-wise.
The improved package is of special utility in' connection with cigarettes and tobacco generally in that the same normally preserves the eontentsfrom are-- deteriorating effectsof air and moisture, yet provides simplemeans whereby access can be had to the contentswhen desired, and afterward the package can be readily sealed against air and moisture without damaging the package: And in this connection it is to be noted that the use of the package is not limited to cigarettes, tobacco, and other tobacco articles, for it will tbeclear; that the same maybe used as a container for a large variety of articles.
What I claim as my invention is:-
A merchandise package comprising an inner wrapper formed of air and moisture proof material shaped to form a container having one end permanently sealed, the
otherend of the container being folded to form flaps that. are loosely overlapped to permit the same to be opened to give access to the contentsof the container, and a label inclosing thecontainer and having one end permcnently sealed and its other end folded toform overlapping flaps that are independent of the flaps of the container and adapted to be opened, the label being shaped to form a, cup-shaped receptacle that holds and protects the container, said label at the 1 junction of its major portion and its overlapping flaps being circumferentially Weakened to permit said overlapping flaps to be torn from the said major portion to give access to theloose flaps of the container.
In testimony whereof I. have ailixed my signature inpresence of two. witnesses.
