- POULTRY-FEEDER.
Specification. r Letters Patent.
Application filed March 28, 1913. Serial N 0. 757,452.
Patented Nov. 10, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER J TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamston, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Poultry-Feeder, of which-the following is a specification.
This invention relates to feed hoppers or troughs for poultry, and it has for its object to provide a durable, simple, and comparatively inexpensive feeder designed to protect the feed from exposure to the weather, and to be operated so as to disclose the feed by the fowl, and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts here inafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of my improved trough. Fig. 2 is a front or end elevation of the hopper. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1, showing the platform in plan.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout all the views.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 4 represents the side walls of the hopper, 5 a central dividing wall or partition connecting the side walls and forming the chambers 6, and 7 the bottom.
The chambers 6' are provided at their front with inclined partitions or walls 8 which terminate at a point slightly above the bottom 7 adjacent the central dividing wall 5 thus providing a hopper for storing the feed and a narrow outlet for the escape of the same into the chamber at the bottom formed by a narrow strip 9 extending across the end of the hopper. An inclined roof 10 is provided to which are secured covers 11 by hinges 12, said roof having a peak or gable 13 to which the covers 11 are hinged. The covers 11 are formed with flanges 14 so as to extend down over the sides and they are slightly wider than the trough so as to extend over the same thus insuring the contents against rain or snow. The entire feeder is preferably made of sheet metal as being the most durable material for the purpose as well as most sanitary since it may be readily washed.
A platform 15 preferably of metal and having its side edges bent around or over ends ofa link 20,the other ends of said links engaging crank arms 21 ends of a shaft 22 which is loosely hung in the side walls 4 of the feeder and extend thereacross. As shown the shaft 22 is formed with an arm 23 which extends at right angles therefrom at about the center of length of the shaft and immediately over the lid 17 and enters a loop 24 in which it rests loosely. The lid 17 is hinged to the inclined partition or wall 8 and its free end extends over and rests on the strip. 9. The lid is to be made heavier than the weight of the platform.
The feeder is shown double withall the parts duplicated so that diiferentkinds of feed, if desired, may be fed from the same. The rods 16 are shown as separate parts but they may be formed in one piece, as indicated in dotted lines at 25, Fig. 3, and bent to shape.
With the parts in the position shown to the left in Fig. 1, that is with that end of the platform adjacent the feed hopper raised, the weight of the fowl stepping thereon added to that of the platform will overcome the weight of the lid and depress the platform which movement will cause the link 20 to turn the crank shaft and thereby, through its arm 23 and the loop 24, swing up the lid and disclose the feed lying thereunder in the bottom of the feeder. The lid will remain in its lifted orraised position as long as the fowl remains on the platform but immediately upon the fowl stepping off the same the lid will drop to its lowered position and lift the end of the platform to its raised position.
Having thus I claim is:
In a poultry feeder consistingof a hopper,
a chamber communicating with said hopper,
a hinged lid for said chamber, a central bail described my invention what on said lid, a transverse shaft having a cen- In fiestimony whereof, I afiix my signatral arm slidably passing through said bail ture, 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
