icliom time concern l3 'itlrnown that I, THORNTON F. SAN- fnoim, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and
.lstate of New York, have invented certain ne'w and useful Improveinents in Evaporating Apparatus, of which the following is a. specification.
' flhis invention relates to evaporating apparatus.
acnuin sugar evaporatlng apparatus s usually, in practice, composed of two or i more cells or efiects through the cells of contained cells or ellects,
which the evaporating process is carried'o'n "in succession. k .My object is to provide, first, an evapo rating effect or cell of novel construction, whereby it is adapted for the addition .of one or morecell or effect units for its enlargement to any desired extent to transform such coupled or combined units into a single cell. or effect, thus providing means whereby the size and capacity of a given cell or effect may be increased to anydesn'ed extent. -A1iother olnect 1S to provide 1n a n1ult1- ple-cell or multiple efit'ect evaporating apparatus, cell or ,tefiiect units to which other cell or efi'ect units may he added from'time to time. to increase the capacity of the complete evaporator accordingto the required lHCl".fl.SG in its capacity.
-A still further object to provide, in an evaporating apparatus, self-contained cells or elfects any or all of the individual cells or effects? of which are adapted: to
have their individual capacity increased by the addition thereto of corresponding selt whereby each cc-l 01' ell'ect rnay have its individual ca pacity increased to any desired extent without interfering witl the usual successive treatment of the ina'erial being evaporated by therespcctive cells.
prov sion in an evaporating apparatus of (1 77 5 cells-or vell'ccts of such iorni, preferably A further object of theinvention is the polygonal, and preferably self-contained, that they may he interchangeably 7 connected to enable he capacity-ofthe appa ,ratus to be indefinitely increased byincrease ofthe; capacity of the respective. cells or efiectsfii, without necessitating an increase :in-.the, .;nu1nberpf cell or effect units forth fully. hereinaf unitary cell. 5
l througliwhich theevaporating process is to be carried on. v I
I The present invention also has for its object the provision of means whereby any of the usual or standard types or constructions. of evaporating cells or effects. may
be utilized for the indefinite increase of the capacity of the respective cells or effects, however the evaporating process may be carried on'withinia particular cell'or effeet, the present invention not being limited to application of cells or elfects of' hereinafter. p a v 'lhe' invention has for its object, in respect to all of theforegoing objects thereof, the provision of means whereby the in the particular construction which appears crease in capacity is a proportionate en-- largeinent throughout the respective cells or efi'ects so that the added quantities of *apor evolved, gases delivered-and condensation producediare accommodated and taken care of proportionately andthe en- 'larged capacity of a given cell or.eitect unit remains unchanged in the valves, pipe connections and operators required, .aswell as in every other respect. ()ne embodiment of the invention is set 1' and shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a. side elexiati on Fig. '2. aplan viewylllig. than end elevation; Fig. 4c,
a: vertical section through a. cell orj efiect whose capacitylias been doubled; and Fig. 5, 'fawertical section tln'ongh a single or The .cells'or efi'ects l be used singly orf1n any desired: multiples, such astwo,

four, six, eight, or even more, a quadruple cii'ect being illustrated.
The drawings disclose cells or effects which are of the same self-contained construction and all similar, the interior construction being substantially that set forth in any patent on evaporating apparatus, N 0. 1028792, dated June 4, 1912, but the invention is not limited to cell units of the internal construction set forth in that patent and it may justas well be applied to any of the usual 01' standard types of evaporating cells and apparatus, and I do not limit myself to its application to cells of the construction set, forth in my Patent N 0. 1028792.
The cell units, if constructed according to my Patent No. 1028792, which construction is. illustrated, are provided with a calandria 5 formed by a bottom or tube'she'et 2 to which are suitably secured heating tubes 1 which open into the calandria at 3, the bottom of the latter being "shown at 6. Suitably secured to the bottom 6 is a plate I which provides a noncondensable gas chamher 8. Suitably secure to'the bottom plate are the takeoff tubes 13 for the non-condensable gases which tend to accumulate in the upper ends of the heating tubes 4, the
tubes 13 being in communication with the,
interior of tubes l. only at the upper ends of said tubes 13, as set forth in my Patent No. 1028792.
The juice outlet or take-off isshoivn at 10, the condensation water outlet appears at 11 and the chamber 8 has a gas take-oil or outlet 12.
The invention is not restricted. to a cell of the internal construction described and is applicable, as will presently appear, to any evaporator.
Where the initial installation is multiple, as is usually the case, the cell units 1 are connected by vapor pipes 17, the last one 17 of which leads to the usual condenser 18, the remaining vapor pipes leading from the domes 1 of a preceding cell to the oalandria 5 of the-next cell of the original installation.
As usual in evaporating apparatus, the juice in the first cell becomes heavier and is drawn by vacuum into the next cell through the pipe 10 and again leaves that cell through the correspondingly designated pipe to pass to the following cell and so on. the finished product being pumped -from the last cell of the series. The vapor passcs irom cell to cell and finally into the condenser 18.
If the interior construction of the cells is like that set forth iu-my Patent No. 1028792, the non-condcnsablc gases pass out through outlets 12 into the calandria 5 of the succeediug cell for the utilization of the heat thereof. as set forth in said patent. llaving initially i..stallcd a multiple cll'ect evaporator whether of a construction set forth in my Patent No. 1028792, or similar to any of the usual or standard multiple efiect -evaporators known to the art, if an increase in capacity of the plant is desired, it cannot, as such evaporators are at present known to the artand constructed, be carried out un der the same control and with a proportionate increase of capacity orwithout rebuilding the installation at very heavy expense.
The present invention provides for any desired enlargement or increase in the capacity of one or more cell units of an evaporator without multiplying the appliances necessary to the control thereof or overcrowding outlets and transfer pipes be yond their capacity but, on the other hand, contemplates an increase to any desired extent, in the individual cell capacity by the addition of one or. more cell units to the initially installed cell units to thereby enlarge the capacity oflany cell unit, or, all of those originally installed and at the same time to provide a proportionate increase in the vapor pipes, juice outlets, drainage out-. lets and, it constructed according to'my Patent No. 1028792, the non-condensable gas outlets, without multiplying the number of valves required to control any part of the apparatus.
In carrying out the invention, each cell whose capacity is to be enlarged is coupled to another cell, preferably of the same shape and construction, the sides of the coupled cell units being previously removed and the cell units bolted or secured together so that the entire interior of one is in communication with the entire interior of the other which is coupled thereto, but each has its own dome, heating means, juice outlet, condcnsation outlet and, if constructed in accordance with my Patent No. 1028792, its own non-eondensable gas outlet. That is to say, each cell unit is preferably self-contained and to eliminate multiplication of controlling valves and the like, when another cell unit is coupled to the first, the juice outlets are directly coupled, the respective condensation outlets are preferably coupled and if the cell is constructed according to my Patent No. 1028792, the outlets for the noncondensablc gases are directly coupled. The
vapor pipes are preferably separate as in usual Prat-i108, and each cell unit Wlll. be increased In capacity and the added cell units will have their vapor pipes arranged and interconnected the same as the cell units of the original installation.
' In carrying out my invention, I preferably construct the cell units 1 with corresponding removable sides so that. as shown in. Fig. 4-, when another cell unit is coupled to one originally installed, the removable side of the former may be taken off and the two units bolted together and said side applied to the added cell unit, leaving the two cell units in complete interior communication. j
Preferably, though not necessarily, the cell units are of polygonal form and preferably square. Making them of polygonal form, preferably square, provides means whereby any side of one cell unit may be coupled to any side of another cell unit and, being of the same construction, they are interchangeable and can be readily secured together. The polygonal construction of the cell units appears in Fig. 2.
Referring to Figs. a and 5, the removable side 20 of the previously installed cell may, on the addition of another cell unit, be moved to theposition shown at 20, Fig. 4, and the flanges 21 which are provided on all sides of a cell unit may be directly bolted together, thereby placing the two cell units in complete interior communication, each cell unit being self-contained, but both forming, in effect, a single cell, although both have independent vapor pipes 17 and independent domes l such construction affording a corresponding enlargement of vapor outlet or transfer as the cell is increased in capacity by the addition of the extra cell unit thereto, the two units constituting a single cell. Similarly, a third, fourth, etc, cell unit may be added, the side 20 being moved each time another cell unit is added so that a given cell unit 1 may have its capacity doubled, trebled, quadrupled, etc. The initially installed cell unit 1 is provided with a removable side 22 having sight glasses.23. It will be understood that the sides 20 and '22 are interchangeable and that the cell unit being multiple-sided, these sides may be changed about as desired.
I wish it understood. that the enlargement of the capacity of any given cell unit by the addition of one or more corresponding units thereto results in a proportionateenlarge- I and uice containlng'parts are constructed 110 ment or increase throughout and that added duty is not brought upon the initially installed outlets; all parts are proportionately increased in capacity. I also wish it understood that my invention is not merely the duplication of the initially installed effect, but, on the contrary, the present invention provides for an increase in the capacity of each cell. The invention, therefore, as distinguished from the installation ofduplicate apparatus, consists in increase in in dividual cell capacity to any desired extent, the system being' one of units which may be added tojform a part of the original cell construction and may be added to from time to time as found necessary or desirable. The invention consists, further, in a cell of polygonal form, and still further, in one havlng interchangeable removable sides. The invention also consists, broadly, in the provision of means whereby an evaporating'apparatus may be built with any desired cell capacity and-at the same time proportionl ately increase all outlets andother parts which have a duty toperform in carrying on the evaporating process.
While I have illustrated the invention as applied to vertical tube evaporator-s, it isjust as applicable to horizontal tube evaporators. Furthermore, whereas I have shown the invention as having cells whose interior construction is similar to that's'et" forth in my Patent No. 1028792, it is not restricted to interior cell construction of that kind and it is just as adaptable to any of the ordinary or standard types of evaporator-s '80 heretofore and now known to the art.
I am aware that various modifications" could be resorted to in carrying out my invention in the different aspects thereof, and
I do not, therefore, limit myself to the spe- 35 cific constructions herein set forth and dis-- closed, but consider-that my claims cover all modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. an evaporating cell unit whose vapor and uice containing parts are constructed and adapted for a proportionate increase or enlargement internally of the cell unit by the coupling thereto of another cell unit with its vapor and juice containing parts in internal communication with the vapor and juice containing parts thereof.

An evaporating cell unit whose vapor and steam containing parts are constructed and adapted for a proportionate increase or enlargement internally of the cell unit by the coupling thereto of another cell unit with its vapor and steam containing parts in internal communication with the vapor and steam containing parts thereof.
3. An evaporating cell unit whose steam and adapted for a proportionate increase or enlargement internally of the cell unit by the coupling thereto of another cell unit with its steam and juice containing parts in internal communication with the steam and juice containing parts thereof. 4. An evaporating cell unit whose vapor, juice and steam containing parts are constructed and adapted for a proportionate increase or enlargement internally of the cell unit by the coupling thereto'of another cell unit with its vapor, juice and steam containing parts in internal communication with the vapor, juice and steam containing parts thereof.
5. An evaporating cell of polygonal form having a plurality of its walls arranged in; planes angularly disposed to each other and g each adapted to be removed, thereby adapting different ones ofits Walls on its difierent sides to be coupled to another cell for an increase of the individual capacity of the cell.
6. An evaporating cell unit having vapor, juice and steam containing parts and a removable wall which forms a side of said vapor, juice and steam containing parts.

9. A multiple-cell evaporating apparatus Whose individual cells are constructed and adapted for individual enlargement and increase in capacity throughout by the coupling of one or more cell-units thereto and in internal communication therewith.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
